When you did Maths at GCSE, and if you carried on through A-level, did you find the learning curve going from a gentle incline to a brick wall? I used to enjoy maths but *struggled* with it at GCSE getting a B-grade for it, but now I am half way through an A-level I have just realised how easy GCSE was. Now I despise it and will give it up as there is no point carrying on in a subject that I a) don't enjoy and b) plain suck at.

Does anyone else agree or is it just me?

A-level maths was simply one of my favourite subjects. Althought, I got a B overall, it was a really high B as well, that was because of the stats. C1 - C4 were simply awsome along with M1. S1 on the other hand was completely bs.

Pfft, Im sat here with my revision books all over doing last minute revision for the C1 and C2 papers im sitting tomorrow.

For GCSE I didn't find maths "easy" - I was in the top set, but was never anywhere near the best, but ended up with an A*- one of the three A*'s I got for GCSE.

Unfortunately I didn't start off A Level Maths well, skipped a piece of homework here and there, and before I knew it I was 2 chapters behind, got a U in the mock and was deep in the shit. Took a lot of hard graft to get myself out of that one, and without a doubt my final grade will have suffered because of my stupidity at the beginning of the year.

However, I enjoy maths a lot- it's one of my favourite subjects, but i'm not the best of it- some of the concepts in M1 seem to have been made up by a 2 year old kid with no understanding of how life works in general, let along mechanics.

The book we were learning from (MEI Pure Mathmatics for C1 and C2 (green and purple front cover)), was crap at explaining things, however these revisions books I got ("Core for OCR") explain things in much better ways, so you can attack questions using two different approches.

So yeah- 3 weeks ago I would have said "yes, its a steep learning curve"- but now i've got these revision books i > MEI AS Level Maths (lets see if i'm still saying that a) after the exam, and b) when my results come back )

Edit- + good look shem and all others doing Maths (or any other subject ), tomorrow morning

I avoided A-Level maths at all costs.  Maths was always my weak point at school and I had to work my tits off just to get an 'acceptable' C grade, so I was relieved that I would never have to do maths again, or so I thought.

In my second year at university I had to do Quantitative Methods as a module, and that was like hitting a brick wall on the learning curve. Bricks were shat, I passed, only just ... at 40%.

Yep, I dropped AS-level maths after 3months because it was too hard, and I also had a B at GCSE in the higher paper.

There is a HUGE step between GCSE & AS/A levels, in all subjects.

But, Ive then done what is basically A-level maths at College over 2 years, 1 year at Uni (91% in the exam ) and now another year, with my exam tomorrow!
And, it was taught a lot better than at A-level with a lot less to learn too, and none of that statistics bullshit.

It was more boring than a sack of boring covered in boring sauce. Attended less than a quarter of my AS classes, and almost none of my A2 classes. Somehow I got a high A overall....but it's not worth your soul. If you can't handle it/hate it, switch subjects or you'll regret it like I did.

I took the C1 paper in January, and got a U, with the rest of my class. We just weren't ready for it. Got C2 tomorrow and i'm feeling fairly confident, just went through a paper ad got 91%.

I don't live in the UK but I can relate with IB math.

I did the IGCSE and ended up getting a B because it is admittedly not my strongest subject. I have to take math in IB and I did the idiotic thing of taking math standard instead of the lower level which proved to be an absolute bitch especially because I didn't require it for Law..

The final exam actually went aight though because I studied a fuck load for it.
You do A-Levels which means you only have 3 subjects..my advice is just to work your butt off..I did that and had to 3 more subjects than you

Thats cos you were a super nerd

Anyway for us normal people, I found it hard first of all, but quickly got used to it. I only needed half marks in my last A level maths exam to get an A

Shadow - Take it from an expert, my name is Math.  Its like this right - all that shit they teach you in school, you'll never use, you will only use what they taught you in JNR school, other than "1927's" own VAT formula.

OK, a brief overview of the British Education system.

In secondary school (equivalent to high school) we study for GCSE's AKA General Certificate of Secondary Education.  Subjects tend to be English, Science, Maths, Languages, Geography etc.  We achieve our GCSE's at the end of our fifth year of secondary school.  At this point education ceases to be compulsory.

After this point if you want to continue your education, you go to college or sixth form.  At college/sixth form, the most academic qualification you can get are A-levels, you can however do other more vocational qualifications.  If you choose to take the A-level route you will typically study four AS level subjects in your first year.  By the second year you will drop one of these subjects and continue the other three as full A-Levels.  A-levels are more specialised than your run of the mill subjects at school, and are therefore a lot harder.  These A-Levels tend to be a students ticket to university.  Basically the better the A-Level grade, the better the university you get into.

There.
