Anyone using the "lock" that go's through the handle and out the ejection port.  I know they are popular...
Question:   Since you have to have the slide locked in the open position for the lock to work. I was wondering if compressing the recoil spring like that for long periods of time has any bad side effects?  Has anyone used these for a while (1yr+)  and everything is gravy?

Well I have 2 kids so that just doesn't fly.  What make? Don't you still have to cock it?  Faster to pull the slide, than to thumb the hammer on most semi's.

If you have the funds, go for one of these ... best of both worlds.

Yes I will be getting safe much like that one when I have the funds.  These locks are temp.  The only thing is if you are going to buy a safe you might as well get a good one that you can put more than just one sidearm in.  I also own rifles. Fire proff, de humid, etc.

these are useful to show that the weapon is clear but after long periods its not good for the spring

If you own a revolver what keeps your kids from 'flickin' the hammer down and making it fire.

once you hear that final click, you have to depress the trigger for it to fire

Yep, if they try to force it down something will break, either the gun or the kid's hand.

Perfect answer.   So yes it does hurt the spring.  I thought so.  Yes I like those trigger locks too. I used to have some but those are far away on the other side of the continent and I have not seen them my local gun stores/range here in CA.

My dads that we shoot you can let the hammer down without pulling the trigger. also, if they dont bring it to that final click, they just bring it back enough to smack that bullet

Why not just get another safe? You can pick up a relatively cheap electronic safe that will give you better piece of mind. Also, with the electronic keypad you can have faster access to your firearms if the need ever arose.

I say get one that's easy to steal, but put GPS tracking in it. It would be fun showing the police right to the front door of whoever stole yer shiz.

Modern revolvers generally have an internal interlock which prevents the hammer going fully forward unless the trigger is pulled all the way back.

/thread.

that is your solution, as leaving the slide back that long WILL cause issues with the springs in the gun. and while they can be replaced, no reason to invite that task if it isnt necessary.

BTW, love the gun you are looking to secure

About the safe:  I said I would be getting one but I want a really nice one that cost more than a few hundred bucks.  I also own 3 rifles, 2 shotguns.  I need a safe big enough to house these few guns, docs, etc. Bolted to the house,  fireproof, and de-humid is a must.  My father is a full blown collector with about 60-70 pieces. I have one brother that is a felon so I am pretty sure I will be getting most of the guns, Knives and other assorted crap. Anyway point being I will need at least 2 large safes assuming that one will be bequeathed to me.  Of this collection i am most !! about an original Luger my grandfather picked up in WW2 (He served with Patton as tank Cmdr.) Anywho not sure what the appraisal on this might be, all depends on the history but the gun is in great shape.  My father also just showed me a new piece he just got.  It was a damn buffalo gun from Africa mid 40's I would guess.  Weird style. looks like a lever action but when you pull the lever it opens the breach at the rear. The cartridge was a monster. look like some 20mm shells I have seen (joke)  Dad said it was $6 a shot!!! I guess cartridge for the bullet is very rare.  Well enough of the rambling thanks for the help.  I decided just to field strip them and then placed the chain locks through the slide.  That should keep the kids. PS i have never been to hipe on guns for my homes security. I have 2 German shepards, a hatchet, and a big knife. If all that fails, well we would just have to go get out the 10 gauge.  I almost feel sorry for the person that try's any funny stuff at this house.

Well if it helps your jealousy out some.  My dad will have to die for the guns to be handed down to me. I can kidd about it now since his heart is as strong as a mule.
