i've never been asked for it. hell, my first job didn't ask for my SS card and my second job let me show them a printout from the SSA (I needed to replace a lost card). they told me to show them the actual card as soon as I got it, but I never got it for some reason and they never bugged me about it.
I've always been required to present my drivers license and ss card.
