“Our work brings completely new ideas to the problems,” Ono says. “We prove that partition numbers are ‘fractal’ for every prime. These numbers, in a way we make precise, are self-similar in a shocking way. Our ‘zooming’ procedure resolves several open conjectures, and it will change how mathematicians study partitions.”

I saw this about a week ago...It reminded me of how much I hate reading math proofs!  lol

Greene's Elegant Universe can be pretty tough. Essentially it tries to take you through all of string theory without any maths, the result being some stuff presented as completely obvious makes no sense at all.
While that's true, it's not an 'academic' type book, but rather aimed at the layman. Albeit the reader needs a brain!
It's on video.. It's available online. Nicely done. .. albeit pretty dated now.

I do have the DVD.  I liked the quantum bar part where the ice cubes tunnel through the glass...lol

Edit: Yes, I can be simple...haha

Truthfully it is one of my favorites. Greene has a talent similar to Hawking when it comes to conveying an understanding with complicated topics. A Brief History of Time is another good book.. but that pretty much goes without saying.

Damn.. so this shakes up what we thought we knew about the amount of hot jupiters vs earth-like planets. Well, possibly. These are candidate planets.

Big news from the Kepler mission: more than 1200 potential planets have been found by the orbiting observatory!

Does anyone else see the irony in a bunch of people getting sick at a fundraiser for the ant-vaccination loons?

So, I read that some solar flare eruption are going to reach the earth tonight.  The Northern Lights are predicted to be viewable as far south as (some northern parts of) the UK.

Also...

The biggest flares can disrupt technology, including power grids , communications
systems and satellites .

Anyway, I thought it would be interesting to see how accurate they are. See what actually happens.

Everytime I look for Aurora videos they're always time lapse, I don't get it. I have no idea what these motherfuckers look like in real time. It's just one of those small pet peeves that get to me. What's the deal with Auroras in real time? Are they like invisible or...I don't get it.

See, they actually have to put it in that it's real time/normal speed. There's some conspiracy going on that Auroras must be viewed only with shitty time lapse!

They look amazing, much better in real time than time lapse

Monday's solar storm — the most powerful one in more than four years — sent huge waves of radiation and fast-moving particles streaming toward Earth. The sun has stayed active since, with another big flare erupting today (Feb. 18). But while the most intense solar storms can put astronauts at risk, the space station's shielding and Earth's magnetic field generally protect against such events pretty well, experts said.

And the Valentine's Day eruption should actually provide a health benefit for spaceflyers, sweeping away some of the dangerous, ultra-high-energy cosmic rays rocketing in from beyond the solar system.

"It actually makes the crew doses decrease rather than increase," said Frank Cucinotta, chief scientist for NASA's Space Radiation Program at the Johnson Space Center in Houston. "The galactic cosmic rays are a bigger concern to us.

So... today I finalised a research project. I get to go into a genuinely cutting edge lab and do genuinely cutting edge research in a field which is riiiiiiight out there
