Since most of us don't live anywhere near New York we probably don't hear or know much about this race.  But from the outside this race is looking to be a close one eventhough its in a heavily Democratic state.

6 point race

The Democrat in this race at one time had a 60 to 37% lead over his opponent and the lead is dwindling fast.

Could this be a harbinger of races accross the nation where Democrats are being rebuffed or is this just a series of `fluff` polls that one-sided towards Republicans?

Stick to your own state. Paladino is fighting the establishment in Albany, anger towards which has been building since Rockefeller was governor.

Paterson is a douchebag but he inherited a shitty hand from Spitzer. The real problem is not the governors office, its the utterly corrupt Senate and Assembly. This is the state of Tammany Hall after all and we have a rich tradition of debased corruption emanating from high office within our state. It's what we as New Yorkers have come to expect. Paladino is campaigning on the platform of cleaning up Albany. If he wins he'll probably be impeached by a combined effort of entrenched Republicrats.

Are you saying that the Republicans in the Senate and Assembly are really just Ruling Class material who will, at the first chance, ponce on a Republican governor?

Stop using the term 'ruling class', it makes you sound retarded. They are all products of the machine. New York politics are based on seniority. Work on someones campaign, attend the meetings or whatever they have, and the party selects them to run. The Republican Party put up Lazio as their pick for the governors position but he got beaten in the primary by Paladino. Lazio sucks. He's a pure machine politician and he doesn't have a brain in his head outside of party mantra (perfect opportunity for me to point out a shared flaw... must resist). Cuomo, the Democrat, is the same way, except his father was governor in the 80s so he has better name recognition. He's also a complete douchebag and a pretty avowed Socialist like his father was. It took Pataki years to straighten out the mess left by Mario Cuomo.

New Yorkers all hate Albany. All of us. We're tired of paying the highest taxes in the country and we're tired of seeing it go into the pockets of the teachers, nurses and government employees unions. We're tired of the 'no show' jobs that get thrown around to family members of Senators. We're tired of the crushing debt. Paladino says all the right things, and is a true outsider, but he's going to get crushed. You can't fight The Machine.

There's a certain irony to how the Tea Party seems to be pushing forward the use of the phrase "ruling class" despite the fact that the right wing is always accusing the Left of provoking class wars.

I will too. I hated Mario. Met him in person too when he came to speak at my high school years after he left office. He's extremely eloquent but his policies almost destroyed the state.

I see what you talking about with the "class politics" with the rich vs. poor but in this case the `Ruling Class` is justified because it goes across party lines and identifies those who will cling to power and do whatever it takes to keep it.

Classic examples is Republican Senator Castle from Delware, John McCain from Arizonia, Harry Reid from Nevada, and Nancy Pelosi from California.

Ok so all that against the Democrats...but when you have a state that is this blue:

I told you to stay within your own states politics. You're fucking clueless. We've had a Republican Senate for the past forty years until the last election cycle. The governor before Spitzer/Paterson was Pataki, a Republican.

I wonder if Harmor realizes we had a Republican governor before Spitzer...

Jesus Christ.

Paladino sucks though. Would use eminent domain to remove the Islamic center from Park Place? Is against abortion in any way, shape or form, even in cases of rape or incest? Thinks the healthcare reform will be worse than 9/11?! He's a schmuck.

I'm not exactly Cuomo's biggest fan but I'd vote him in over that prick Paladino any day of the week.

It wasn't Jesus Christ :-P

And yeah I remember him.  But my point is about a Governor's race where the Democrat is so heavily a favorite in a very Democratic state loosing such a big lead.  Some polls show the race at 6-points.  A 6-point disadvantage can be over come.

Is it the Democratic candidate that is the main factor (that fact that he just got caught lying about voting for Bloomberg), or the environment hostile to Democrats and incumbents in a mid-term election?

I think its the ladder, but I would be curious if you think its the former.

Lol, no you fucking don't or you wouldn't be posting about how you can't believe a Republican governor could be a possibility in "such a blue state" like NY.

People just aren't huge fans of Cuomo. If Hillary stayed a senator and then ran for governor she would win in a landslide.

It's not the latter. It's that people didn't like Cuomo's dad and dislike Albany. Cuomo, as attorney general, tried to make a big splash prosecuting banks for fraud after the collapse. Instead of going after Goldman, which is based in New York, he instead picked on Bank of America (Delaware based). Pure political move. He's also tied to the HUD under Clinton which contributed to the housing crisis. Cuomo sucks. Paladino will more than likely flame out after he says something stupid and the Dems turn it into the campaign. Cuomo definitely has superior name recognition, the support of the unions, and the inherent 'I vote Democrat because my dad voted Democrat' New York bias working in his favor.

Paladino is only running because he's mad about the 'millionaires tax' that passed last year. He's not the 'everyman' that you're trying so hard to paint him as.

I heard Paladino on NPR today, he seriously sounded like an angry grandpa with alzheimer's.  Even the normally very respectful anchors were left wondering wtf they just heard.   He seriously just launched attacks at whomever they brought up that wasn't in his corner.  Didn't seem to be a method to his madness, he just wanted to fume and vent, it seemed IMO.

I respect and agree with some of the things he says...  Gov't creating a machine that feeds their greed, politicians more worried about re-election than their constituents, etc.  But as soon as he commenced with his ranting, he really just seemed angry, but in no general direction.  Odd, humorous, and strangely refreshing to hear someone so adamant about speaking their mind with the spotlight on.

There's definitely things on Paladino's agenda which are favorable, I just don't think he's the type of person to bring real change to Albany. Neither is Cuomo, but we'll see.

P.S. New poll came out today saying Cuomo is up by 33 points. I bet everyone read this thread.

Even Thomas Dewey was a Republican. It's not impossible, and after saying it shouldn't happen, you tell people what kind of radio to listen to?

lol @ talk radio, yeah just what I need.  45 year old slobs who couldn't finish college, pill poppers who just can't quit, some dude who has a degree in nutrition all telling me my world is fucked, a girl with a sultry voice who says hugs will save the world.

Radio is the garbage disposal of multi-media bro.  Good radio probably hasn't existed for decades.

I use talk radio for one purpose.  When I am tired, and on one of my 1000 mile drives, I put on the most hate-spitting, ignorant fucks I can find.  Guaranteed no sleeping that night.
