I'm having trouble working this one out.

RT08 RTR would have been first half of 2008
RT58 RTR would have been second half of 2008 (but we know they run from September to April to September)

What happens in 2010?

RT10 RTR would only cover you for the whole year, unless they add another numeric to the plate which would make RT510 RTR but then thats too long.

RT15 RTR would be 2015, right?

I don't get it.

Us 6's instead of 5's?

2010 and 2060

because in 2001 we had 2051

I don't get the method behind it.

edit: oh there is no method, the DVLA are just fucking stupid and came up with a stupid plan back in 2001 to begin with.

Don't know if this started in 2000, so i'll miss that out.

2001 = 01 and 51
2002 = 02 and 52

2011 = 11 and 61
2012 = 12 and 62

2021 = 21 and 71
2022 = 22 and 72

I AM just guessing, and offering a solution.

Yeah thats correct, it's just not a great method. 2001 to 2009 worked perfectly, 2010 onwards is a bit stupid due to wanting to bang out two registrations a year.

Is that what's officially going to happen?
Yay! I think the same as bureaucrats!

No, once a car is registered in the UK, that's it, you just have to renew your car tax.

It's for new car registrations.

lol. Cars first registered in each year (6 months) gets a specific numberplate.

No, the number plates have a set couple of digits for the earlier or latter part of the year.
So you can see how old a car is to 6 months. I guess it's to free up the amount of plates available?

Car bought in Feb 2002 with no new plates or w/e would have ##02 ###
Whereas August 2002 would be ##52 ###

You can get them but they're either taken, or they're expensive. Sometimes you find plates up for auction

I would suggest it's purely sales driven.

GL08 FPK translates to:

GL = area identifier tag

08 = year

FPK = random element

Irish plates are similar they are [YEAR] - [COUNTY] - [NUMBER]

That is an odd system for license plates.  Not saying it's wrong, because it isn't....just odd.

it's by individual state. Utah recently changed to letter,number,number _ number,letter,letter

used to be

You guys can't even tell the year of the car with the number plate, it's just random from what I gather, and you're saying our system makes no sense. When you can find out the cars origins and its year by looking at the plate.

And then you have all that other shit all over the plate which makes it even harder to read
