The have electricity running through them to de-ice/de-mist them.

I couldnt find any decent photos,
but on some cars, at the rear (usually up the top) there will be a seperate section of lines which act as the cars aerial.
on my car (02 forester) the aerial is on the rear quarter window
and I know on an R32 Skyline there is a line going straight down the front windscreen and around the outside of the windscreen aswell.
newer cars also have the heated lines on the side mirrors, and as already stated, the front windscreen (usually barely visible)
edit - i just went to take a photo of my car but the damn camera battery died
but on some cars, at the rear (usually up the top) there will be a seperate section of lines which act as the cars aerial.
