Edit: Oh, this is a different one.

In the UK the #1 on my Birthday was "La Bamba" by Los Lobos which once again proves the British population's tremendous taste in music.
In the US the #1 was, as mentioned, U2.
In Australia the #1 was "He's Going to Step on You Again" by The Party Boys which I can't recall ever hearing. I'm sure I have actually but I can't remember it.
