This is one thing I realllllllly like. I'll buy a new album, stick it on and listen to it, all the way through, then I'll listen to it again and dissect the lyrics, and now I present you gents an opportunity to do this with me.

I'm gonna start off with a song with an obvious topic, but a politcal underpinning

Flobots wrote:

I can ride my bike with no handlebars

I can ride my bike with no handlebars
No handlebars
No handlebars

Look at me, look at me
hands in the air like it's good to be
ALIVE
and I'm a famous rapper
even when the paths're all crookedy
I can show you how to do-si-do
I can show you how to scratch a record
I can take apart the remote control
And I can almost put it back together
I can tie a knot in a cherry stem
I can tell you about Leif Ericson
I know all the words to "De Colores"
And "I'm Proud to be an American"
Me and my friend saw a platypus
Me and my friend made a comic book
And guess how long it took
I can do anything that I want cuz, look:

I can keep rhythm with no metronome
No metronome
No metronome

I can see your face on the telephone
On the telephone
On the telephone

Look at me
Look at me
Just called to say that it's good to be
ALIVE
In such a small world
All curled up with a book to read
I can make money open up a thrift store
I can make a living off a magazine
I can design an engine sixty four
Miles to a gallon of gasoline
I can make new antibiotics
I can make computers survive aquatic conditions
I know how to run a business
And I can make you wanna buy a product
Movers shakers and producers
Me and my friends understand the future
I see the strings that control the systems
I can do anything with no assistance
I can lead a nation with a microphone
With a microphone
With a microphone
I can split the atoms of a molecule
Of a molecule
Of a molecule

Look at me
Look at me
Driving and I won't stop
And it feels so good to be
Alive and on top
My reach is global
My tower secure
My cause is noble
My power is pure
I can hand out a million vaccinations
Or let'em all die in exasperation
Have'em all healed of their lacerations
Have'em all killed by assassination
I can make anybody go to prison
Just because I don't like'em and
I can do anything with no permission
I have it all under my command
I can guide a missile by satellite
By satellite
By satellite
and I can hit a target through a telescope
Through a telescope
Through a telescope
and I can end the planet in a holocaust
In a holocaust
In a holocaust
In a holocaust
In a holocaust
In a holocaust

I can ride my bike with no handlebars
No handle bars
No handlebars

I can ride my bike with no handlebars
No handlebars
No handlebars
Obviously, this song represents the obvious rise in ability throughout life, being able to perform more complex tasks as you get older.

But, when you listen more closely, there's the idea that as a country/leader gets more powerful, then they are able to get away with more and more, with little or no opposition.

Flobots wrote:

This one section of the song conveys this sense.

Discuss, I want to know what you guys read in this song, and after a few posts I'll post a new song.

I can take apart the remote control
And I can almost put it back together

One of my favorite parts of any song, I find that really funny for some reason.

The most important part of message is one doesn't even realize when one is drunk with power. Still, I find that most songs that try to be deep are the most shallow ones.

Fuck I hate that song.  It sounds to me like the songwriter was just trying to find a bunch of words that rhyme together with no real direction for the song.  Rereading the final verse there is a bit of political undertone, but to me it just seems to be a afterthought.

God I hope that song isn't stuck in my head all day now.

I guess it's portraying that even when we think we can do something, there are times when we just can't.

Word. Can't stand it.

Anyway, he's wrong. He can't ride a bike with no handlebars. With no hands perhaps, but not handlebars. If you took the bars off you'd lose the ability to steer the bike with his weight, and he'd crash and die, hopefully saving humanity from future wank music.

If there is anything to say about the song, is that it has a very direct and obvious message about politics and power. Maybe you disagree with it or find it shallow, but I don't understand how you could say it isn't there.

And this

After all you put me through
You'd think I'd despise you
But in the end I wanna thank you
'Cause you made me that much stronger

Well I, thought I knew you
Thinking, that you were true
Guess I, I couldn't trust
Called your bluff, time is up
'Cause I've had enough
You were, there by my side
Always, down for the ride
But your, joy ride just came down in flames
'Cause your greed sold me out of shame, mmhmm

After all of the stealing and cheating
You probably think that I hold resentment for you
But, uh uh, oh no, you're wrong
'Cause if it wasn't for all that you tried to do
I wouldn't know just how capable I am to pull through
So I wanna say thank you, cause it...

Makes me that much stronger
Makes me work a little bit harder
It makes me that much wiser
So thanks for making me a fighter
Made me learn a little bit faster
Made my skin a little bit thicker
Makes me that much smarter
So thanks for making me a fighter

Oh, ohh

Never, saw it coming
All of, your backstabbing
Just so, you could cash in
On a good thing before I realized your game
I heard, you're going around
Playing, the victim now
But don't, even begin
Feeling I'm the one to blame
'Cause you dug your own grave, uh huh

After all of the fights and the lies cause you're wanted to haunt me
But that won't work anymore
Uh, no more, oh no, it's over
'Cause if it wasn't for all of your torture
I wouldn't know how to be this way now, and never back down
So I wanna say thank you

'Cause it makes me that much stronger
Makes me work a little bit harder
Makes me that much wiser
So thanks for making me a fighter
Made me learn a little bit faster
Made my skin a little bit thicker
It makes me that much smarter
So thanks for making me a fighter

How could this man I thought I knew
Turn out to be unjust, so cruel
Could only see the good in you
Pretended not to see the truth
You tried to hide your lies, disguise yourself
Through living in denial
But in the end you'll see
You won't stop me

I am a fighter and I
I ain't goin' stop
There is no turning back
I've had enoughhhhhh

Makes me that much stronger
Makes me work a little bit harder
It makes me that much wiser
So thanks for making me a fighter
Made me learn a little bit faster
Made my skin a little bit thicker
Makes me that much smarter
So thanks for making me a fighter

Thought I would forget
But I, I remember
I'll remember, I'll remember

'Cause it makes me that much stronger
Makes me work a little bit harder
It makes me that much wiser
So thanks for making me a fighter
Made me learn a little bit faster
Made my skin a little bit thicker
Makes me that much smarter
So thanks for making me a fighter

Disagree, but I guess this part is 'politics and power' that you are talking about.

A song I think is a far better example (of direct and obvious)

t's like MK-ULTRA, controlling your brain
Suggestive thinking, causing your perspective to change
They wanna rearrange the whole point of view of the ghetto
The fourth branch of the government, want us to settle
A bandana full of glittering, generality
Fighting for freedom and fighting terror, but what's reality?
Read about the history of the place that we live in
And stop letting corporate news tell lies to your children

[Verse 2]
Flow like the blood of Abraham through the Jews and the Arabs
Broken apart like a woman's heart, abused in a marriage
The brink of holy war, bottled up, like a miscarriage
Embedded correspondents don't tell the source of the tension
And they refuse to even mention, European intervention
Or the massacres in Jenin, the innocent screams
U.S. manufactured missles, and M-16's
Weapon contracts and corrupted American dreams
Media censorship, blocking out the video screens
A continent of oil kingdoms, bought for a bargain
Democracy is just a word, when the people are starvin'
The average citizen, made to be, blind to the reason
A desert full of genocide, where the bodies are freezin'
And the world doesn't believe that you fightin' for freedom
Cause you fucked the Middle East, and gave birth to a demon
It's open season with the CIA, bugging my crib
Trapped in a ghetto region like a Palestinian kid
Where nobody gives a fuck whether you die or you live
I'm tryin' to give the truth, and I know the price is my life
But when I'm gone they'll sing a song about Immortal Technique
Who beheaded the President, and the princes and sheiks
You don't give a fuck about us, I can see through your facade
Like a fallen angel standing in the presence of God
Bitch niggaz scared of the truth, when it looks at you hard
Or another

Oh-my, oh-my God!
in my mind they got us livin' suicide
singin' oh-my, oh-my God!
in my mind they got us livin' genocide
oh my my...

Well politicians got lipstick on the collar
the whole media started to holler

for just about anything they can bust us

meh, I don't think an artist necessarily has to be that blunt to be as obvious. They are clearly writing about something considering they are a published artist, not just stringing words together, and with the references of options only available to the wielders of power I don't know what else it could be talking about.

I don't think so either.  But mentioning holocaust/command etc. doesn't make it blatantly political either.  As far as writing about something because they are a published artist, I'm not buying that argument.  There are far too many published artists that talk about absolutely nothing.

So what is this part about?

I agree it is shallow, as I said in my first post on the thread. Still, even if it is shallow, it's most certainly there.

There are so many people that want to be published I think it's pretty sound. You pick up any book and while you might not like it, you can be pretty certain in guessing that there is at least a distinct and coherent theme in it.

So what is this part about?

It is set up for the rest of the song. As I said before the most important idea in the song (in my mind anyways) is the idea that when one achieves great power, you don't even see the power you hold anymore. You are have been corrupted so completely that killing millions in genocide is no more meaningful than scratching a record or reassembling a remote control.

FUCKING USA by Yoon Min-Suk

Did you see the short-track skating race?
A vulgar country, Fucking USA
Are you so happy over a gold medal?
A nasty country, Fucking USA
Such as you are, can you claim that the USA is a nation of justice?
Why the hell can't we say what we have to?
Are we slaves of a colonial nation?
Now shout it out: "No to the USA"
A wretched thief that stole our Olympic gold medal, Fucking USA
A wicked robber that tries to rob everything by force, Fucking USA

Did you hear Bush's reckless words?
A shameless country, Fucking USA
It makes war threats to the north as well as intervention into the south
A country of gangsters, Fucking USA
Is the USA still a beautiful country?
Is the north still an "enemy" to be killed?
How much more do we have to endure before we realize?
Now shout it out: "Yankee, go home!"
You dirty Yankees, wait and see
We will reunify the country with the independent force of the Korean nation
We will build a dignified country, a reunified country

Remember well our tears of blood
You, author of Korea's division, Fucking USA
Don't forget the Nogun-ri massacre of civilians!
You murderering country, Fucking USA

Oh, time for some new lyrics then, in that vein of thought of course.

Once I could only poo
Now I can tie my shoe
Mommy made me happy when I cried
But now I can do chicken deep-fried
So I be happy
Cause' I'm my own pappy...
Singing blah blah blah...
Singing nah nah nah...
Sing dat song and sing along

laugh all you like, know the story behind the song????

Contrary to poplar belief "Fuck'n USA", often called "Fucking USA", oringinally was a protest song written by South Korean singer and activist Yoon Min-suk. Strongly anti-American, the song was written in 2002 at a time when anti-American sentiment in South Korea reached peak levels. This was mainly due to the Apolo Ohno Olympic Controversy and an incident in which two Korean middle school students were killed by a U.S. Army vehicle. The song became a hit and was played at numerous protests and marches including one in front of the United States embassy; people also wore stickers bearing its name.

OK GOODBYE
Obviously Crab-Alien's song is much about our culture of fear here in America.

The first line I would point at is "Imma bomb yo' pussy like an A-Rab", which is obviously a jab at our fear of Muslims and people of Middle-Eastern heritage. We in the West, and in the US in particular often associate Middle Eastern peoples with Terrorism. Also the term "A-Rab" is used as it is an often insulting term for middle-easterners. The term was introduced into our vernacular in the Mark Tawain novel; The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, where Huck tells his fiend Tom Sawyer "I wish I was as rich as a Spaniard or Ay-Rab". During the 1870's when Mark Tawain wrote that the stereotypical Middle-Eastern was the rich Sheik, who stood atop a mountain of gold and had a harem filled with over nine-thousand beautiful women. Tawain's coinage of the term A-Rab for a stereotypical Middle Easterner thus is used by Crab-Alien to represent the modern Middle-Eastern stereotype: The Terrorist.

Another lines "I'm caring a nine / and I must warn you I'm out of my mind" is a critique of some parents' somewhat unwarranted fear of school shootings. After the 1998 Massacre in Colorado and the 2007 one in Virginia, many parents are over concerned with the safety of their children at school. And whilst it is natural of parents to worry of the safety of their children, the likelihood of a child dying in a school shooting is almost nil.

And while our culture of fear is a prevalent theme in Crab Alien's Musicz, there are other parodies as well.

The call for "Every crab report to the seashore" is a satire of racism. Just as Crab Alien sarcastically calls his fellow Crabs to the seashore, certain people elect themselves leaders or representatives of their race as a whole, which even though their goal is often to defend their race from racism, is something that in actuality perpetuates racism. Also there are "Crabs" in our society who call their fellow "Crabs" to "the seashore" for the purpose of committing racist acts. As the Ku Klux Klan would come together and place flaming crosses on the lawns of Blacks, Jews, Immigrants, Gays and Catholics, and Neo-Nazis gather together to do similar acts to the same groups, Crab Alien calls his Crabs together to buy seashells by the seashore, which is racist against people who sell seashells by the seashore.

The chorus "Now I'm gonna nip your ass / if you pass / up my sexes claws / I'll make you lol / lol lol lol / crab alien rules the world." is Crab Alien satirizing the egotism that other song artists have. The first 3 lines make fun of how other artists believe that their allows them to get away with things that the average person would not be able to get away with, whilst  the final line "Crab Alien rules the world" makes fun of how other artists seem to think that their fame does mean that they rule the world.
