And he would have gotten away with it too if it weren't for those meddling kids and their stupid dog.

But seriously, it was definitely Bubbalo.

The ABC reported that at least 20 kangaroos were killed, among about 400 due to be shot in a bid to protect the site from overgrazing and to protect other species.
As long as they were butchered and sold for meat, I see nothing wrong. It happens all the time. Kangaroos have few natural predators and since the aborigines have stopped killing them for food, their numbers have sky-rocketed to potentially dangerous levels.

I was going to start a post about the decline/restrictions of hunting and the results on the environment, but you posted first so... The fore mentioned is my reason as to the occurrence of this act of annual sheer retardation.  The roos could be managed much better.  Hell I'd pay to go shoot one.

So they can just kill a bunch of those cute animals just because they feel like it?  Fuck them.

Uh, no, because the population is unsustainable and without action they'll eventually all starve.  Like I just said.

They reach a certain population and the grazing land becomes wiped out. You then see them starve, and other species suffer. It makes sense to cull them, and the population is carefully monitored in hopes of sustaining the kangaroo species.

Now someone tell me how culling kangaroo's is bad, but killing whales for scientific research is okay...

Fuck yeah, I hope they don't waste the meat, kangaroo meat is nice!  I actually have some wild roo (from SA, could be NSW tho)  in my freezer, trying to decide how to cook it.

What do you reckon bf2s?  Some options:
- Cook as a plain old steak
- Roo and red wine spagbol
- ANZAC pizza (roo, lamb, maybe some onions/tomatoes/mushrooms, and NEVER consumed without a beer to wash it down)
- Stir fry

It's all good. Them roos is good eatin'.

On a serious note for you Aussies: What do they do with them after they're killed? Do they process the carcasses for meat or what?

i hate how some people to to blow this type of stuff way outta proportion
they get shot with a dart and fall asleep what a terrible way to go..if only they done this to some of the people out on the streets
iam pretty sure that they got shot the normal way out in the bush
the only reason that this is making news is that the uni students in Canberra are bored and need something to whinge about

steak ftw.

although I have to admit I never tried roo. is it any good ? what does the taste compare to ?

on topic: culling is a totally acceptable means of population control. Nothing unusual, really. Of course it's sad, and a PR dream for animal rights activists, because the Kangaroos are so cute and whatnot, but the population needs to be kept under control ( no natural predators ), or the whole ecosystem will suffer, with consequences for a lot of animals.

i like the plain old steak...as long as it is medium so it doesnt get too chewy

iam pretty sure that they are destroyed as they use some sort of chemical to kill them once they are sleepy bye bye's

roo reminds me of venison...its very lean almost no fat and a nice game type of flavour

The top animal welfare group (the RSPCA) is fully supportive of the cull.

All you hear about are some fringe groups who have 5 second diatribes with little substance. Never heard of them before, will never hear of them again.

After 2 headshots in a row, someone says " Impressive " in a deep scary voice.

Seriously though. Roos are the perfect solution to many of our problems. They dont bugger up the ground with their hooves. Their meat is very lean. They dont fart out green house gasses like cows. They dont require tonnes of grain like cows. They are really tasty!!

Its got a stronger taste/smell than wild venison, well this stuff does anyway.  Have made a burger which has some of this stuff in it (along with meat from 9 other different animals ) and the roo was definitely the strongest.

Steak, with a red wine reduction. Something that compliments the strong taste of the 'roo.
