Another gig will always be nice, and the card should improve performence, but keep in mind, the 8600 is nothing more the a glorfiedDX10 version of the 7600.  If your not planning to go dx10, you might be able to get a better performing 7600 for a better price.  Going with 2gbs of matching ram will give you a good boost, as graphics are do better with ram.

Get a 7600/7800 instead. That and 2GB RAM would make it a completely ok setup.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

If you really don't want to buy a new pc: a 2nd gig of ram + 8600 = yes

I don't agree with that one: 7800's are hard to get and therefor more expensive than a 8600, which you can buy for a price around 100 euro's. now the 8600 scores close (1000 points difference) to the 7900GT, which is better than the 7800. 8600 FTW I'd say: cheaper and better!

I don't wanna burst your bubbles, but the HD 3650 performs better for what it costs than the 8600GT... (= costs less at about the same performance)

Pretty valid point, but if he can get his hands on a 7800 from a well-equipped store with many in stock, they usually go pretty cheap.

Otherways, the 3850 is a really good alternative.

yes, but the 3850 is more expensive then the 8600. Sure it's better, but bottlenecking would be the problem. Like putting an ferrari engine in an old fiat panda.

True, but it's not a lot more expensive, just $20 more than the most expensive 8600GT, $70 from the cheapest, and that gives it so much better value. I'd save up a little more for a 3850 over an 8600 any day.

/convinced, go for the 3850. Or if you don't want to spend more: 8600 if you must.
