Where do you stand on the great video game debate? Should games promoting violence, or mimicking real life tragedy be banned, or are they no worse than film and TV?
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/6225286.stm
The right thing to do or not?

the main point the article skips is that the main reason it was banned is because of the Wii's 'interactiveness'.. as in actually cutting the person's head off with the Wii remote ect.

I see no point in it frankly, give it an 18 rating by all means, that in itself should stop children playing it, and if parents buy it for their kids, well, they're the ones at fault, but banning it is plain dumb and achieves nothing, a game will not make you kill someone, being mentally unstable makes you kill someone, nothing to do with games, and the game's less violent than a lot of films yet they made it out no problems.

Ditto. I vote that it should not have been banned. Good parenting would solve this particular problem.

I dont see the point in banning the game at all. The 18 certificate should be enough to parents to stop and think for themselves that this game (or any other 18 rated games) is not recommended for their children. All that banning will do is make the game more popular as well.

end result = determined kids will get their parents to have it shipped from abroad anyway.  They need to focus the laws on the parents who supply the games and not banning everyone because of the inevitability that some parents will break the law.

the way I see it there are several anti-manhunt arguments

the envolvement with the Wii controller
the violence, both of these 'stimulating people into violence themselves'

but both of these have quite obvious counter-arguments

firstly why ban it completely if it's just the Wii version getting people annoyed? I can understand the link they could make between acting it out and violence but surely, anyone with a few spare brain cells can remember that it's a game.

after all the game doesnt make people violent, quite often it's because violent people themselves buy it because it appeals to them and then the protesters make the mistake of thinking it's the other way around.

The other stupid mistake of banning this is the publicity! I saw the article on the front of the BBc website, and it reminded me about the game. With all this publicity of it being a violent game, people who enjoy this kind of game will go out of their way to get it, and for Rockstar (the makers) it's all good publicity.

When Gaspar Noe released his first movie 'Seul Contre Tous' (http://imdb.com/title/tt0157016/) he actually said in an interviewe that he was disappointed that it wasn't banned. Banning things just adds flames to the fire and bolsters the controversial, mysterious image of the items in question.

Its a pointless act that brings more attention to the game and acts as good publicity as there are people such as myself who didn't know of the game and now (as i have a wii and thing it would be a great use for the wii) i might have it shipped to me.

As this game was banned there's a good chance that the next resident evil will be too as thats on the wii and you'll probably be able to use chainsaws or crowbars via the wiimote.

There's no reason why they couldn't of just given it an 18 certificate and given people the choice about the game or even make them print a warning such as "warning, this game has alot of strong bloody violence that is unsuitable for people under the age of 18" in big letters.

To be honest I don't really sympathise with Rockstar games.  Don't get me wrong, I'm not one of the hippy, politcally correct nanny-state types but Rockstar just seem to make controversial games for the hell of it.  To me, they have the attitude that if they can't sell games on gameplay, they'll resort to over-egging the violence to promote a certain qudos.

Yep.  I said in the non poll thread about this that I almost bought the first manhunt.  Without the controversy I probably wouldn't be that bothered as the game didn't sound that great but its the part of the human mind that if someone says you can't do something that you immediately want to.

This the biggest peace of ballshit i haver ever heard.

Its all because of the kid who killed someone and he blamed it on Manhunt. A game does not influence fuck all.

If it is too violent then why are films such as Hostel part 2 being allowed to air.

This is the biggest pile of crap the cencership people have ever done.

SO what? They can make what they want. I admit they do but does it mattter??? No I have the right to but it if I want. Why do other people get to decide what I am allowed to play and what not.

well at this point it doesnt matter if its banned, as it will not be released as long as its rated Ao, so rockstar will have to go tone it down a bit to get the M rating to release it anywhere. And then it probably will be unbanned.

No.

Banning a game total undermines the rating system.
Thats what the "A" rating is for. but no game company want sto be the first to use the "A" rating. God forbid a game be made for adults and not some whiny ass kids.

Since it's being banned in the UK, the relevant ratings are those used in the UK - "M" and "A" ratings are not appropriate, since they are not ratings used by the bbfc (Uc, U, PG, 12A, 12, 15, 18 (and 18R for porn) - are the ratings, it should get an 18 rating).

Same deal. It undermines your UK rating system. If they are banning what they deam inappropriate, just nix the ratings system and call it communism.

But your original point is void, since there have been loads of games with an 18 rating in the UK. Dreamweb was the first I can remember.

SO in UK:
15=US's "M" rating?
Or 18= US's "M" rating?

I would believe UK's 18R is the same as US's "A" rating.

Shit, if I couldn't kill people in games and let my anger out on a game, I would kill people in real life that piss me off. Thats what I feel.
