Norton kept bugging me for an update but i wanted to wait for a week first. Then just now, it gave me a crash. How did i know it was Norton? When it came to disk check, the error had the word 'Norton' in the phrase. So is avg a much reliable better anti virus?

NOD32 FTW. way better than Norton (less resource usage) or AVG (it actually detects pretty much everything)

are you sure that norton is the culprit? It might be that the PC is unstable and norton was just doing something the moment the pc crashed and thus coming up on the disk error. Maybe you should run a couple of laps of orthos and memtest86+

Norton is for the users who are not so "Computer Savvy". It is much slower but has its perks. AVG is much more "Current" in the sense that it ACTIVELY checks and scans where norton must be prompted so the person can see it working. AVG is MUCH better because of its activity level. Norton is also fucking expensive where AVG is free or cheap. FUCK NORTON!

Oh yeah i remembered, i think i was installing cs and was talking to someone on msn and the thing happened. My whole history conversation was trunicated during the disk check.

Norton USE to be a decent AV system, then it got bloated when symantec bought it and I personally think that the entire Norton suite is shite now.

I had been running AVG but recently started using Avast.  Best AV I've seen, it finds stuff AVG can't.

Just about everything is better than norton. An old man manually looking at the hard drive declaring whether there are viruses or not on your hard drive is better than norton.

I personally AVG 7.5 Pro, you could get the free version or another anti-virus. But I strongly recommend against norton. As a previous poster mentioned, when they got bought out by Symantec they went downhill very quickly.

OMFG dude, take it from a security guy, Norton sucks. Choose anything over norton, and if your gunna buy anything, buy AVG.
Although,
Adaware SE
Spybot Search and Destroy
Avast
are all great choices. those were my 'top 3 programs' after AVG started charging for use. It used to be AVG instead of Avast, but ive found that Avast does a super job.

Adaware: http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-SE-Per … ag=lst-0-1
Spybot: http://www.download.com/Spybot-Search-D … ag=lst-0-1
Avast: http://www.download.com/Avast-Professio … 31713.html

Keep them updated and be sure to update them all before first use (especially Spybot because it comes 'blank' in a sense)

AVG or Avast!, both have free versions that work great. I've been using Avast! for the last few years and haven't had any problems.

I have Norton 2007 and it is great.  When a computer is running Norton and is UPDATED when it needs to be, then it is very secure and I am happy with it!

Why wouldn't you update when Norton asks?  You like living with risk or something..?  LOL.

Norton sucks up half of your computer when it's not even doing anything. I suggest AVG, or what I have, CA Anti-Virus. Only uses 6% of my computer.

I'm currently running BitDefender 10 and I'm pretty happy with it. Memory usage seems to be really low.

By the way: Thanks for actually writing "than" and not "then" in the topic title. Seriously.

Okay, well, I have Norton on my computer.  Paid for protection that I know works, though it is a bit of a resource hog    My question is: which is the better of the four that are presented here: Norton, AVG, Avast, or Nod32?

The last few AV roundups I've seen, NOD32 was the winner.  It used fewer resources, caught more baddies, and produced fewer false positves that the others in the test.

I was a long time Kapersky user, but once it started to bloat, I switched.  I've been running NOD32 for less than a year, but so far, I'm very happy with it.  The configuration is less obvious than any AV software I've used in a long time, but in less than 5 minutes, a reasonably minded person will figure it out.

I had BD10 on a previous computer and i was satisfied with it, it has a few drawbacks to it but they are controllable. But at the moment I'm using Norton only because I'm on a free subscription that ends in 31st of march, so I'm using it until then. May switch to BD10, but i will NOT go to AVG, it nearly killed my last PC. It might be fine now, but I'm not gonna take that chance.

Half the viruses out there are written to attack Norton software anyway, which usually completely screws you.
