Okay, it's not free but... it's an alternative idea.

I personally use Stardock's WindowBlinds (US$19.95).  There are some Vista-style skins/themes as well as some variations based on the appearance of the Aero Glass style.  It won't completely make your desktop look like it... but it's something.
