Did you know the overwhelming majority of adolescent reading disorders are linked to prior adolescent language disorder? If kids have trouble understanding and forming language then they will also have a poor time reading. Interestingly, minor things like ear infections could have a dramatic effect on a child's ability to learn. One case study showed that a child with a history of infant ear infections went on to have language and reading disorders despite doing very well in things like mathematics and science. Their otherwise academic success showed that the student's reading difficulties are not connected to low IQ or higher cognitive disorders.
