The response to Kim Dotcom's offer of sponsorship from both TNZ and the government will be interesting.  I suspect TNZ will be more agreeable than the government, but then JK's eyes might light up at the thought of the government saving a few mill.

I'm dead-set against it. I like Team NZ and I really dislike Kim Dotcom and really don't want him associated with it. His public relations campaign has been legendary and he's got a lot of fans with that as well as a lot of sympathy for the admittedly wrong way he was treated by the NZ Police and NZ Government. But the guy's a sleazy criminal of the worst sort. Even before he came to NZ his convictions included fraud, credit card theft, embezzlement, and insider trading. The guy's a career criminal in that he's built his career on breaking the law. Don't get me started on Mega.

That being said I wouldn't be opposed to the next campaign having a crowd-funding element to it. That way people like Kim Dotcom could contribute whatever they wanted. Maybe some of those US millionaires who threw their support behind Team NZ would contribute. Maybe even Larry himself as he kind of owes us for, well, pretty much everything - not least of all making his series an actual contest. The $36m that came from taxpayers amounts to $8, it's not that big an ask. I wouldn't mind contributing to the next challenge. It would also enforce Team NZ's status as the team that takes the fight to the billionaires on behalf of the people who see America's Cup yacting as an exclusive sport for people with way way too much money.

Looking forward to the next one already. Ben Ainslie says he wants to promote a British team to challenge, the Aussies have been encouraged by the prevalence of Australians aboard Oracle, (mostly just Spithill and Slingsby - though Spithill certainly won't be leaving Oracle to sail for his country, the guy's a complete and utter mercenary,) and Bob Oatley is looking at mounting a challenge. Artemis has already said they will come back, Luna Rossa has given no indication that they're giving up. And Larry knows that he's expected to make it more inclusive next time so who knows who else will step up. The only team hemming and hawing about it is us, apparently for the sake of $36m.

When there's a will there's a way and I think when the disappointment of last weeks settles a bit more the people who don't care much for sailing will die down and the people who care for sailing will want to see Team NZ bounce back and take the thing next time.

I read that as Lorde and Brownlee for a second...who the hell is browitness?  Lorde sounds a bit like Gin Wigmore, similar singing voices.

Personally I wouldn't chip in for an Americas Cup challenge on kickstarter or w/e, but also wouldn't be worried if the government did on my behalf just like this time.  Its good PR for out boatbuilding industry, and our economy really needs to become more than just a one trick pony which can be spooked by a fucked up botulism test in an unlisenced lab.

Speaking of Kickstarters, I'm looking forward to seeing this.  I'm nominally anti-nuclear, but wouldn't mind Thorium getting a bit more reasearch.

Useless NZ trivia time:  (read: theres a few minutes to go til hometime and I'm bored as f--k)

For a brief ten year period (1962-1972) there was a nuclear reactor operating in what is (arguably, some would say) NZ sovereign territory.

If this had been operating at the time of the anti-nuclear laws, do you think this would have affected US-NZ antarctic co-operation?

Sums up NZ politics pretty well:

http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/politic … ian-theory
Who's to say Prime Minister John Key isn't a reptilian overlord in disguise?

Key's own office certainly can't; its response to an official information request was that it had no data to disprove the theory.

The response came after Shane Warbrooke requested "any evidence to disprove the theory that Mr John Key is in fact a David Icke-style shape reptilian shifting alien ushering humanity towards enslavement".

Key's chief of staff responded this month, saying "no such information existed" to probable cries of "they would say that" from conspiracy theorists.

David Icke is a former British footballer and broadcaster who descended into ridicule after claiming he was the "Son of the Godhead" and promoting conspiracy theories, which he has since turned into books.

At the heart of his theories lies the idea that a secret group of reptilian humanoids called the Babylonian Brotherhood controls humanity, and that many prominent figures are in fact reptilian.

2 whole pages on this?  Shocked...
I stood in line for four hours. They better give me a Wal-Mart gift card, or something.  - Rodney Booker, Job Fair attendee.
