Well thanks for the loving wordsmtb0minime wrote:

Also, does anyone know if there's an XConfig that works (or was even created) for Warhead? I've tried searching around (admittedly not very much) and haven't found anything. It's kinda frustrating to see everyone saying how nice it is that Warhead performs better, but in my case, it's worse
I'm not very active these days and kinda busy with other things in my life.. Just lurking around here sometimes. I see people do want a new version though, some good news is, I have vacation now. I won't promise anything but I can try and work on it and maybe someting will come out of it.
@PPSKevin
It should do some improvement as this is majorly graphics card dependant. About the actual bottleneck I can't do much ofcourse.
Marketing, you know. It's a pretty clever tactic really. Sure it's confusing for the 'regular' non-IT person, but that's the whole point. If something is confusing, people are more easily overwhelmed by information and especially from someone who knows all the details (referring to your "Why do IT guys have to keep explaining the different Homes? And Starter?" comment).unnamednewbie13 wrote:
UGH! Why do they have to make everything so bloody complicated.
REVISION FTW:
Windows 7 Starter
Windows 7 Home Basic
Windows 7 Home Premium
Windows 7 Basic (32-bit; the emerging economy stuff)
Windows 7 Home (32-bit; same features as home premium, 3 pc license; renewable if by same owner)
Windows 7 Professional (32/64-bit; same features, 3 pc license; renewable if by same owner)
Windows 7 Enterprise (32/64-bit; same features)
Windows 7 Ultimate (64-bit only; same features, 6 pc license [you know only enthusiasts would have it); renewable if by same owner]
All manufacturers required to at least include the mint restore discs or OEM copies of the operating system as per licensing agreement.
OEM releases of Home, Professional would be licensed to 1 PC. Basic would be OEM only. I'd like to see Ultimate dropped and merged into Professional, but that ain't happening. And for the price of Ultimate, we should get something extra. Like a bloody t-shirt. Or a baseball cap. Maybe a signed autograph from Bill Gates and Paul Allen. As for the 64-bit only Ultimate, might as well start forcing the issue somewhere...
But yeah, stop ITERATING the bloody names. Why do IT guys have to keep explaining the different Homes? And Starter? That's lower than "emerging markets." Three simultaneous apps? I can beat that shit with Windows 3.1. Why does it even exist? WHAT WERE THEY THINKING?! What manufacturer would POSSIBLY want to release a computer boasting a three-app multitasking limit? Some poor jerk is going to apply an upgrade to it and fuck things up even worse. What a load of balls.
But as the OP says...they don't listen.
Also, aside from marketing in my opinion this is not a bad move. The starter edition is meant for netbooks, hence the three application limit. Microsoft is somewhat right in the fact that people who use netbooks in general do not need more than three apps running simultaneously (8.9" - 10.1" screen, not a very fast CPU and much RAM, let alone a fast HDD/SSD, can criple performance with many apps).
I do not entirely agree on the feature seperation between the different versions but hey, again in my opinion it's not a bad move.
It's actually r_Displayinfo, but you found it already
Currently testing and improving the config. Also, Crysis: Wars will have seperate config files. Gotta redo the lower levels completely though, so can take some time. In the meanwhile I wait for the new editor to arrive so I can make time of day tweaks.
The next pacakage will probably be for Crysis: Warhead and Wars. It will still work under the original Crysis though.

I assume you mean Crysis: Warhead? Else I'm totally lost here.Mutantsteak wrote:
xGj if you can hear me you better made an xconfig for Far Cry 2 asap
Well then all I can advise you in the meantime is to drop XConfig till I release the Warhead package. Already ported most things over to Warhead and it works pretty smoothly.
Yea, the thing is, everyone will play Warhead from now on. Crysis Wars is the MP version of the game and will ship with Warhead but on a seperate, and seperate to install, disc. This means that the userbase will focus on those new games and most likely the patch will not be needed anymore for the MP component of Crysis 1. But, if enough people are interested Crytek will look into it, the door will be always open our community manager said.
Hm well.. I've returned a little. Let me dig up what I wrote on the other fan forums:
Sorry for it being that way but I'm sure if it's still needed after Warhead I'll make a killer combo package. After all Warhead ETA is only 13-14 days from now (depends on the country)..Important Update On the Plans of XConfig for the future!!
Written as of the 20th of August, 2008. The development of version 1.4 of my 'mod' as you may call it at this time has been evolving from time to time. I do not have that much time to work on the mod anymore yet don't worry as I'm not dropping support completely.
I am at this point, awaiting Crysis Warhead and seeing if there is anything I can port over from the mod, or work on a new version. Either way, I want to see what backwards/cross compatibility Crytek is going to offer us between Warhead and the original Crysis.
When I am aware of what they're going to do my initial plan is to create a large package version. With configs for the original Crysis, and possibly for Warhead, and ofcourse customized Time of Day sets. Including much more I have planned on I hope to shed some more light on when the time has come.
Sorry if this unfortunate news for any of you, but I think it's the best for all of us. When I am fully aware of the future (e.g. Warhead being released and I have played it and inspected it) I can decide on what to do next. It's not that much of a good idea to release a package now which no-one will play for long since Warhead is out in 20 days (Europe atleast).
I hope you understand!

I'm so curious for benchmarks. I'm still hoping for that card that makes a jump in performance like nVidia did with 7 to 8 series.. It's only been marginal increases with weird pricing lately.
Right, open up the autoexec.cfg that has been placed in your Crysis\Game\Config directory.
Find and replace the line r_HDRBrightOffset = 15 to r_HDRBrightOffset = 40. the HDR should be fixed, it's something I (along with more HDR and SSAO fixes) did for version 1.4.. The overglowing effect is gone.
If it's at default not at 15 (can't remember for every config level) just change it to 40 anyway.
It is also a strange thing that your framerates don't improve, although I think you can run very or ultra high from that card.. I do it with a single 8800GTX.

No but I thought those newer cards were only increasing in length. When it's smaller than my 8800 I can easily fit it in and that's why I'm happy. No new case to be boughtAirwolf wrote:

Right, I think you have picked the wrong level of config for your system. Would you mind telling me what configuration you have and what XConfig level you picked? Also, the custom HDR settings in 1.3 are overdone and no-one likes them apparently, so they will be tweaked in 1.4.. Anyway if you could give me more information I'd be able to help you (also delete everything in the HDR section in the autoexec.cfg to remove my custom HDR)
In alternativity to editing your config files, create a shortcut to the Crysis executable and add -devmode to the target path. Then, once ingame, press F1 to switch between third and first person player view (yes also in non-vehicles), F3 to fly freely, F3 again for noclip and fly, and F4 for god mode (I'm not sure if that works ingame too or in the Editor, I spend most of my time in the Editor anyway). Just wanted to share that, so you don't all go swimming that much By the way don't play MP in devmode, servers don't have that option on (some do, but rarely) so you will not be able to connect.
A little update on 1.4 after 2 months of quietness here:

Scaled down from 2000x1500 resolution
Enjoy. I try to work on it but I have much things going on. I will eventually release more versions though.

Just updated from Beta 5. Had every beta of FF3 and god, it's such a good browser. The new RC1 interface is sexy too!
fake CP? I'm interested now
On mine too. I don't see the big deal with this, they stop selling it, so what. Like you can find a lot of computers pre-equipped with XP these days anyway anymore. An extremely large amount of the people have pirated copies of XP and have had them for years, so go figure.GC_PaNzerFIN wrote:

Erm.. and don't take an Antec 900 if you're gonna watercool I guess. It's not a big case.. Get something like a Silverstone TJ-07 or another big midi/big tower.
When I go to that URL it redirects me to http://tracker.hypernia.net/
I have no idea what happened to it, never knew of the site either.

If you have the cash, do it.. But I don't see that as a tight budget system.
Nah we're just tech enthusiasts I guess. Nothing about getting caught up in a hype (atleast for me it isn't).
Well I suppose you can get a watercooling setup for ~£130, but what would you need it for on a tight budget system? Tight budget means low performance components and then the watercooling is just a waste of money, time and perhaps your hardware if you mess something up.
Great! I'm an nVidia user myself but this is nothing negative. It could either whipe the GeForce cards away (not very likely but you never know), and especially for it's price, or it could just perform a bit worse/the same and then there would be competition so all prices drop.

What parts are you talking about? And yes I agree, 3DMark06 isn't a useful benchmark most of the time. Performance varies a lot more in real world situations, but yea the OP had a question and I just try to answer it as detailed as possible.unnamednewbie13 wrote:
If you really want to get your 3dmark score up in circumstances as discussed, you could swap for certain bits of hardware that'll (by the way) cause you to perform worse in Crysis. Therefore: ignore 3dmark 06.xGj wrote:
To get it clocked higher (which I don't see a need to here, but it may improve performance in Crysis aswell), you have to get a decent aftermarket cooler and get it to 3/3.2 GHz.I wouldn't worry about anything
I do know that old software can tend to perform worse on newer hardware, or encounter problems. In the case of 3DMark06 though, this is not common or the software being outdated. I do know that the current generation of hardware (which the OP's belongs to aswell) scores high on 3DMark06 and hasn't got problems with it. I do read overclocking forums and the likes, so I know what I'm talking about when I say the problem here is not the software.
I did knew of Vantage already by the way.
What I already said before is, the main problem is probably the CPU clocked at stock speeds, and when you think of that and it already gaining 12K points in 3DMark06 and good fps in Crysis, I wouldn't worry about anything. To get it clocked higher (which I don't see a need to here, but it may improve performance in Crysis aswell), you have to get a decent aftermarket cooler and get it to 3/3.2 GHz.

Fact that 3DMark is becoming outdated hasn't got anything to do with the system scoring so low. As new hardware comes out scores should just go up a lot in the older getting programs like 3DM06. Anyway, Elite: tried the newest drivers etc.? And I assume your Q6600 isn't overclocked either? At stock it's only 2.4GHz.. Hence the lower CPU score in 3DMark, and the overall score.unnamednewbie13 wrote:
You've answered your own question. Oh, and turn off AA.
[edit: oops, thought you said Crysis was running slow. Ignore that last. 3dmark is becoming outdated, so don't rely on its results to measure your e-wang]
[edit2: try 3dMark Vantage when it's out]
These things I never want, but I can imagine they run better than iMac's.. As in my opinion Apple fails at everything desktop related.
It hasn't got a dynamic sky like the higher levels.. But yea I'll look into if it takes away a lot of performance. Just to let you know: on stock low there's no dynamic sky either.
You cannot reinstall DX10 afaik?
I decided to wait out until I have a lot of more money.. Then I'll buy a totally new case, mobo and PSU + I'll see what I can do on the graphics part (which is what it's about).. 9800GX2 hasn't proven itself to me tho.. I'll just wait till the new chips generation. I'll probably also get watercooling by then..
Thanks for all your input people

Nah, it's a mid range intended card in a new series. Basically it's in the same new core generation I believe this one is G94.. So technically it would replace the 8600 cards, but because nVidia has gone crazy on naming their cards for some reason they do replace the 8800GTS, but not the lower ones. So see this as a G9x core mid range card.. Which is a good performing thing but not in the right price class either.
Yea I have Dreamscene, but tbh I don't like it. I try to keep my computer free from as most as possible crap because I'd like to have good gaming results. I do have a high end CPU + GFX but I just don't want to waste it on that. I tried it out a couple of times it's really cool but crashed my video drivers too.. I can live without it
So (whenever Im gonna do this) you actually just have to put a blob in the center and then push down the fan on it? Sounds easy :d
Yea I know, it's been a while ago that I made this.. I've learned a lot since Was just trying to show off the beauty of the engine, didn't have real good action parts.
Ok thanks
Thx for the help also Bell. Btw, do the length depth and width of the 9800GX2 vary a lot to the 8800GTX? I hope I can fit it in.
Yeh that's true but I don't really care for failsafety. If I put in another 8800GTX that'd be a lot of hassle (and extra money spent), and I really like the 9800GX2 too.. Plus it performs well I guess, and I have hope for better drivers. Every new driver I have tried so far with my 8800GTX has improved performance over the time. And, if I put in another 8800GTX that's 249 euros + a new motherboard = 200 euros + a new case = 190 euro's atleast (big towers eh) + a new PSU which is also 150-200... I have made up my mind and will just go for a single 9800GX2. Karma supply drop in all your area's Thx for the help.
I read otherwise
Alright. I still am not convinced on the graphics card though.. Some sites say the 9800GX2 performs awesome in Crysis (that's the only game I'm interested in actually for upgrading. The rest runs fine ), others say the 8800GTX SLi outperforms it. But it will be a hell lot of a hassle to upgrade all that stuff.. sigh.
A vertical or horizontal line? Or should I spread it out over the CPU? That's what I've read I should do. Thanks for the help so far
My PC is most definitely not old. But apart from that, it's really annoying and slows my system down somehow on boot up (atleast it did under XP) so I removed it. I'm udner Vista now again anyway so I don't really care.
So, after posting in the 9800GTX specifications thread a few threads below I decided to just start a new thread to get more help and avoid derailing and confusion. I'll get straight to the points:
- I want to upgrade my PC
- I currently have one 8800GTX, a Gigabyte GA-P35-DS4 motherboard, and a Thermaltake Soprano case. These are going to be ugpraded.
- I am deciding if I want one single 9800GX2, which would be the only upgrade if I'd pick it (no need for PSU, mobo and case change).
- Or I want (I'm leaning a lot more towards this) a SLi 780i motherboard, and a bigger case and PSU. What do you guys recommend for a case (I guess it has to be able to house a SLi system, and two-three HDD's), and a PSU, and another 8800GTX so I SLi them.
- I am gonna sell my current mobo, case and PSU if I decide to buy new ones.
- And I could also sell this 8800GTX, and get 2X 8800GTS 512 in SLi, but I'm not sure if it'd perform better I actually don't think so.
So what do you guys recommend? I have a budget of about 560 euro's if I decide on keeping the case, mobo and PSU, because I'd get an 9800 card.. Or I have a budget of around 750/800 euro's if I sell the current stuff.
One more question: if I buy a new motherboard I will transfer my E6850 + Thermaltake V1 to it, do I need to remove the fan first, then the CPU, then put in the new mobo and apply new thermal paste (what should I clean the old one with?) and then the fan on it again? I never did anything with thermal paste before.
Please advise It will be much appreciated, and rewarded (karma?).. Thanks

Why do so much people wait for the FF 3 beta to end before they grab it? Even though it's in beta I personally have never encountered problems with it, and it's a whole lot more stable, better and structured than the final 2.0 release. Only thing are the addons which aren't that compatible everytime a new beta comes out, but yea I can live with that.
Use the silver default theme.
No seriously you could use Windowblinds, which sucks ass and is a resource hog, and you could also just browse sites like deviantart.com where they have under Customization a whole lot of Windows skins. It's easy, just follow the instructions it's generally something along the lines of put it under C:\Windows\Resources\Themes or something.
