I don’t see it as a gloat. More a full stop on a comically terrible prediction.
Fucking FINALLY.
I was just a casual decade off. Rest in whatever, Robert.

For someone who never wastes an opportunity to talk about how innocent he is, Donald Trump seems awfully reluctant to release the one bit of information that would clear this whole mess up.
I've got to say this whole thing is like a drug to me. This is my reality show. Who knows what tomorrow will bring? I'll definitely be tuning in.

Don't know much about his personal views, would be interested to know what you thought was weird. He worked with my Mum in the 70s and would frequently make references to certain physical assets which would be dreadfully inappropriate nowadays. But yes, he was a funny bloke.
RIP John Clarke. I'm a little too young to have strong memories of him as Fred Dagg but I'll always appreciate his weekly clips with Brian Dawe which kept me sane during my time monitoring Australian media and politics.
Cartoonist. Not well known outside of NZ and Aus. Pretty much the antipodean Charles Schulz.
Brief mention for a hero of mine who had a significant impact on me growing up - RIP Murray Ball.
"Well basically, I just copied the ObamaCare we have now. Then, I added some fins to lower wind resistance. And this racing stripe here I feel is pretty sharp."
So it's basically ObamaCare except it accomplishes less, benefits the rich more, and leaves more people without coverage. Brilliant, that's pretty much exactly what I expected from Trump and the GOP.
It's hard not to notice that Trump's fingerprints are far away from this, I would put money on him having absolutely nothing to do with it. I expect he found it all too difficult and just told Ryan to get something cobbled together that might score a pass mark. The result is a shit compromise that angers people who were opposed to ObamaCare because it's too similar to it and pisses off people who support ObamaCare by hobbling it. No-one wins. As per usual in the US health system.
RIP Bill Pullman.
I was reading some transcripts from his news conference. He's a loon. Can't establish a coherent thought, words just tumble out of his mouth in an almost random order, he verbalises the next thought before the first one has even established itself in his brain. He's like that Miss South Carolina from several years ago except while she had a nervous episode and knew she was spouting word salad, Trump seems to think he is being clear.
"I mean, I watch CNN, it’s so much anger and hatred, and just the hatred. I don’t watch it anymore because it’s not very good. ... I think it should be straight. I think it should be — I think it would be frankly more interesting. I know how good everybody’s ratings are right now, but I think that actually — I think that’d actually be better.
I don’t watch it any more because it’s very good — he’s saying no. It’s okay, Jim. It’s okay, Jim, you’ll have your chance. But I watch others too. You’re not the only one so don’t feel badly. But I think it should be straight. I think it should be — I think it would be frankly more interesting."
"You know what uranium is, right? It’s this thing called nuclear weapons. And other things. Like, lots of things are done with uranium. Including some bad things. But nobody talks about that."
This is a class presentation from a kid who hasn't done any research.
I think he probably is in the early stages of dementia. Certainly has a form of ADD too. Either that or he's a Mike Myers character and this is an elaborate joke.

In fairness the scope of it has expanded massively since it was first announced. Hard to think it's been going since 2012 though.
That explains why Trump has doubled the membership fees since becoming President.
I also see Mike Flynn is gone. That didn't take long. A shame Trump didn't use it as an excuse to use his catch phrase but I suppose it would have been kind of embarrassing to fire the person you appointed as your national security advisor after insisting it was your opponent who posed a national security risk.

It's just the same as when people were celebrating him for being someone who spoke his mind. I mean yeah but what's on his mind is dog shit. The fact he speaks it doesn't make it any less dog shit.
Interesting move by Trump, firing the Acting AG because he didn't like her legal advice on his immigration ban EO. I believe the last time a President did that it was Nixon and he resigned shortly afterwards. We can only hope.
I always wear a sterling silver Lynn Edsitty bracelet on my left wrist. Was a 21st present from my sister. I think the only times I've ever taken it off was when I was doing army stuff and the two times I've had it cleaned and shined. Also used to wear a brass and steel mokume bracelet made by my Mum. Still have it, looks really cool but it corrodes and stains my wrist brown. Would like to find a solution one day. Also have a silver bracelet I picked up in Bolivia. I really like it but it's pure silver and really malleable and could break quite easily. Will have to get a jeweller to reinforce it.
I used to like pendants. Had a couple of Maori Hei Matau carved out of bone. Wanted a greenstone/pounamu one but to be honest I'd probably lose or break it which was generally the fate of the bone ones. Had a King Eric viking coin on a chain too. Grew out of wearing them though.

RIP John Hurt. Enjoyed his performances.
Don't start defining stupid Ken, it's going to have to be re-written every two days for the next four years.
Speaking of which, I see Trump surrounded by five other men signed an order reimposing a ban on government support for international aid groups that provide or counsel women on abortion services.
I don't think the women's march was exclusively for women and didn't seem to be anti-men. It's just that when people like Trump are in power women tend to bare the brunt meaning any backlash against it is going to be led by women.

Happy New Year all. Did the Tongariro Alpine Crossing on the 31st. Great weather, interesting volcanic landscape. Saw your Mum.

Yeah someone told me they fucked with it. I haven't used it too much since the latest big patch but when I did it didn't seem to be quite as effective as I remember. It's a shame because it's got a bit of a learning curve to it and is by no means the easiest thing to use. This while there are other balance issues they really should be focusing on, namely the death-spitting Automatico and pitiful M1903 Experimental which is only a slight improvement in damage-dealing over the Kolibri despite using normal pistol ammo.
Edit: And they made the BAR - which was already good - better. What the Hell?

Well the NZ PM resigned today and it so happens I am seeking work. This could be excellent timing.
Fuck no.
Also technically I never left. Still have all my stuff. Kind of speaks to just how organised the NZDF is.

I wish they'd do that. In my experience they simply cut and paste e-mails saying that there are no jobs available but they'll hold your details and get in touch should something come up. To date I have never been contacted by any of them about anything. This despite the fact they continue to put up ads which I dutifully apply for only to get the same fecking e-mails.
Makes you feel unemployable which sucks considering the simpletons out there who have jobs waa-ay above their ability while I'm stuck at home endlessly applying for jobs like a loser.

Job-seeking sucks ass. What do recruiters actually do?
Fidel's dead. Wonder how long it'll take Trump to claim credit for it.

There was one in 2013 near Wellington that caused a bit of superficial damage. 2011 was the big one in Christchurch that was, as it turns out, quite a bit smaller in magnitude than the one last week. It came after Christchurch had already been hit by a pretty big one a few months prior though and given it was shallow and in the wrong place it absolutely slammed the city. The one last week was the biggest I've experienced but didn't do even close to the damage I saw in Christchurch - at least not in Wellington.Trotskygrad wrote:

Oh I got made redundant. I officially don't have to give a fuck about what's happening in Australia any more. Apparently your cricket team sucks now.
Earthquakes are my main concern now I guess. The science of it is a little concerning. The 7.8 one on Monday morning was a wild ride but if Christchurch is anything to go by it may have been a precursor and a few days, weeks, or months down the line we may be in for a doozy to take out all the pre-weaken'd buildings. A low chance of it happening apparently but Trump was elected so what does probability know about anything? Nothing, that's what.
Kaikoura was pretty badly hit. Lot of landslides, the railway line was literally thrown onto the road, and the seabed has been lifted up between 2-6 metres. It's re-shaped the coastline.
As for Wellington the port is cracked up and a number of compromised buildings will be torn down but nothing actually collapsed. The concern is that we'll get another decent sized one in a few weeks/months. Still I hope the country has learned from Christchurch and will be better prepared.
The perils of living on the Shakey Isles.

Nothing to report really. Still getting aftershocks which is still setting off that fucking car alarm down the road every so often. CBD is going to open again tomorrow but only 1/2 of my flatmates are clear to return to work. Just waiting to see what happens really and hoping we've seen the worst of it.
It was a Hell of a jolt last night. I'm on the first floor of a nine storey apartment building and it felt like it was being ripped apart. It was built with earthquakes in mind so it's very safe but it's also designed to move around a lot in a tremor. Even though it was doing its job in order to stay up from where I was standing it didn't feel like it would have taken much to make it crumble like a stack of Jenga blocks. I don't envy those on the floors above me.
Curious to know how my old office fared. It's in an older building which saw a far bit of damage the last time there was a decent shake here.
Hopefully can get some sleep now. Quake hit just after midnight and not much sleep was achieved afterwards.

Doing what news?
WOW got hit by a massive earthquake. Biggest I've ever felt, quite a bit of damage to my building and we keep getting sizeable aftershocks. Little shaken up here.
Edit: I would like to request that the ground stop moving please.
Edit: Fucking car alarms! What are they even good for?
Edit: Quite a bit of damage, especially in the north of the South Island. Wellington CBD is a mess and is closed. If I was still employed this would be like a snow day, except with more broken glass.

Don't worry, he knows the best people. People you haven't even heard of that are better than the people you have heard of. And people have heard of both those two clowns so I can only assume his picks will be people other than them.
I've come around to it. I still think it feels more like a Battlefront game than a Battlefield game but that's a personal thing and isn't based on anything but my own perspective. To me Battlefield is what it was in 1942 and 2 and gaming has moved on since then.
Looking forward to the return to the WW2 setting. Maybe in two years time.

I don't believe I ever made a prediction. Now I feel like my trust in rationality and logic have taken a hit but it's not as if that hasn't happened before. Ultimately it's not my problem anyway.War Man wrote:

Australia was never great.
I ran a 60km ultramarathon on Saturday. My first one, in fact my first time running more than 23kms. If I were to do another one I think I'd actually try to put in place a training plan rather than think base fitness and stubbornness is enough. It was enough but I was very slow and am currently very sore.
Played it a little bit now.
It's okay. My problem is that it doesn't feel like a Battlefield game, it feels like a Battlefront game. I don't think it's going to have much lasting power.

I got made redundant. Or should I say, I volunteered for redundancy. Yes it seems even New Zealanders expect too much pay for Australian companies now and they're moving their broadcast operations to the Philippines. Gutting my team and my side of the company. Keeping a skeleton crew there for some unknown reason but what's left at the end of this restructure didn't make me want to stay.
The writing's been on the wall for a while so I've been trying to time it right to walk out of there with a redundancy package and into another job. I finish next week and while another job hasn't materialised I have several back-up plans that I'm going to kick into action over the next few days.
Either way it's going to be an exciting change. I've been at my job nearly six and a half years which is probably longer than I should have been. There are a few things I'll miss but a shite-load of frustrations and headaches I won't.
Also the weekend after I leave I've signed up for a 60km ultramarathon. Great timing. Furthest I've ever run is I think 23-24kms but I've trained strategically so if I follow the plan I should get it done. If not it'll be a good way to thrash myself physically.

Trump has spent his 70 years on this planet with the table tilted constantly in his favour, of course being expected to compete on a level playing field is going to give him the impression the contest is rigged.
There's an issue in that Trump gets a lot of his talking points from escaped mental patient and manic conspiracy theorist Alex Jones who talks a lot about the concerns many Trumpettes have about "the establishment". It's lunacy and it's a real danger that Trump is giving it such a platform but ultimately it should be another reason that level headed voters will turn away from him.
Wouldn't be surprised if Trump, Jones and Roger Ailes started a media company once he loses the election. Trump Media - for when Fox News is just too "fair and balanced".

He shouldn't win. There are a lot of people working hard to make it look like he is in a stronger position than he is. A Trump win will be a defeat not just to Hillary Clinton but to logic, scientific process, and numbers.SuperJail Warden wrote:

Edit: Man, the latest bizarro move from Trumpettes is to call for the 19th Amendment to be repealed because Eric Trump posted a picture from fivethirtyeight showing what would happen if only men voted; a likely landslide victory for Trump.
Like... how many ideals of your own country can you shit all over under the banner of "Make America Great Again"? First they were just cancelling religious freedom and discriminating on the basis of race, thy moved on to jailing political opponents AND their lawyers. Now they're going to take away a woman's right to vote? What in fuck is up with these people? They can't be serious!
This has gone way off the deep end. This is absolute insanity.
"Basket of deplorables" was way too nice of a moniker.
I think the best thing I've heard from the collective alt-right maniacs, anti-establishment nihilists, and brain-dead idiots that support Trump is that they're going to work to undermine the GOP if they continue to back away from Trump. Best possible outcome. Because Trump won't win, I just can't see it happening. And if the Trumpettes work to punish the GOP over it well that's just brilliant, it means everyone else doesn't have to find some other way to do it for the fucking disaster they have introduced by nominating Donald Trump when they should have just quoted that other great Abraham:
"You? President? This is the greatest country in the world! We've got a whole system set up to prevent people like you from ever becoming President. Now quit your daydreaming, melonhead!"
At the moment Trump is an out of control firework. He'll burn up eventually but until then he's going to do a lot of damage and the best advice for anyone is to try and get to a safe place and watch the carnage from afar.
