If this is still going, sign me up.  13,827 Driver Special Ability points.  I always thought there should be separate rankings for chopper pilots and chopper gunners.  I work as a team with a friend in the chopper and we do pretty well, he guns most of the time and I pilot.

The 1.5 patch is really going to be about security and stopping hacks.  I know our server provider is giving DICE/EA information about the crashes our servers experience.

How is that not a macro or script?  The TV missile just doesn't curve like that.  Did you see the last shot on the jet?  The missile was following the crosshairs exactly.  I've got over 250 hours in the chopper and the TV missile just doesn't fly that way without the use of a macro or script.

If I'm wrong, please explain it to me.

We have autoadmin on our server.  You can change the settings.  We DO NOT have it set to admin solo choppers or fighting commanders.  The only things we have it admin are attacking uncaps with vehicles (on foot is fine), commanders using aircraft when more than 20 people are in the server, jets ramming choppers, and people force team killing when a jet is taking off.  It warns the first time you do any of those things.  It doesn't kick until the second time.

I have to say that it's been great for our server.  People don't mind rules, whatever they are, they just want them to be enforced.  The autoadmin helps make sure the rules are enforced.  The guy that made the program is adding features all the time.  His forums ask the users to submit ideas for changes.  Anyway, it's been great for us.

Here's what I've learned from running a server, you have to have rules that are easy to enforce and not rules that are only enforceable if it happens to an admin.  For instance, a no camping rule can't be enforced unless an admin is the one getting camped, unless of course you just take the word of any player who says they are getting camped.  Another rule that can't be enforced unless an admin sees it personally is bunnyhopping.  Are you really going to kick someone because someone on the other side of the map is complaining about someone else bunnyhopping?  That kind of blind admin is rather dumb in my opinion.

My point is that if you make a rule, you better damn well be prepared to enforce it every time, otherwise people in the server will bitch to no end.  Don't give them rules that they will complain to admins about if you can't easily enforce it.

I run a 64 slot, all maps server with vehicles.

Our server has 3 main rules:
1.  No attacking uncaps with vehicles (Autoadmin takes are of this for us, so it's always enforced, every single time)
2.  No attacking uncaps with artillery (you can easily see this on the map if your commander does it, you don't have to be at the site of it)
3.  No raping the TV station with the chopper on Sharqi without all other flags captured (pretty easy to enforce because you can see where your chopper is on your map if you're MEC, and if you're on US, you're usually somewhat close to TV station to see if it's happening, pretty easy to tell anyway, this rule really helps make that map more balanced)

I'd say we now get very few complaints with this rule set in place.  The other rarer occurrences of redlining and force TK'ing are never allowed, but are of course harder to enforce.  Those rules go without saying though and happen pretty rarely.

Creating rules that aren't easily enforceable is worse than having no rules.  Admins can't be perfect, so don't create rules that force them to be.  Just my advice.

No, I'm saying that there were a few people doing this hacking which was causing problems and now there are more doing it simply to get EA's attention to fix the problem.  The hacking was happening, but not getting much attention, now it's getting a lot more attention which is more likely to get the attention of EA, right?  Anyway, that's just what I heard from another server operator.  Who knows if it's true or not.  Anyway, hopefully EA will fix it.  The truth is that people will exploit glitches or use hacks if they exist, hopefully we can get at least a few of them closed up.

No, seriously, where did you hear that stuff about "points"?  I've talked with other server operators who are in the know and that's not what they said to me.  I've heard it's a way to get EA's attention to fix the problem.

Yes, it's hackers.  The hack is caused by spoofed player ID's that match a player that is already in the server.  It's more of an exploited glitch than anything.  EA is the only ones that can fix the problem.  The hope is that the new patch will fix the problem.  Our server has also been plagued by this problem.

Yeah, I don't have a problem with attacking the uncaps on foot.  It's just when the vehicles get involved that just ruins it.

Yeah, also depends on what time of day you play.  Some times are more popular than others.

No problem, just don't give us a reason to kick you.  Like when you were commanding and taking the tank.  It kind of pisses people off when commanders do that.  So of course you're welcome in the server, just be cool when you're in there.  You saw tonight, I think we had some fun matches (7-0 tickets on Jalalabad, haha).

So they restored his points, but didn't restore his hours?  It just makes it look like he's rank hacking.  I mean wouldn't you agree?  We can't go and investigate every single player we're thinking about kicking.  If it really is the case that they restored his points, then you can understand our confusion.  Sorry about that, I brought it up in our forums, so hopefully it won't become an issue again.

from what i saw, one 3 stars guy couldnt tolerate being killed again and again and in his anger went and told u i was "hacking" so i could be kicked from server and stop hurting his precious kdr.
if you are gonna kick or ban people from your server it would be better if you check first with punkb or EA who you are dealing with.

I mean I know it's not that big of deal to rank hack, but why shouldn't we kick someone who is rank hacking?  I'm not trying to give you a reason to get pissed off, just saying that shouldn't we be able to kick people who hack?

Hmmmm, sounds like you've been abused by too many admins.  We really try to have as mature of admins as possible.  We make all of our admins apply for it and then the rest of the clan votes on it to approve or disapprove the application.  Then if someone is abusing their admin, we take it away.  We're not perfect, but we really do try to make sure things are handled fairly.  Like I said, we just have the 3 rules apart from the normal ones like hacking, TK'ing, etc.

I guess everyone has their own preferences and their own playing style though.

So you all would rather play in servers with no admins and no rules?

Would you guys agree that rounds that are closely matched, meaning that ticket counts are pretty close, are fun?  I would say that even if you're on the losing side of a close match, it's still fun because you're trying your hardest and working with your team to help them win.

So that's what I mean when I say have fun and not ruin other's fun.  Having balanced teams to me makes it fun for both sides.  So when I see people complain about a team sitting in an uncap, that means the teams are unbalanced.  Teams being unbalanced I think really sucks no matter what side I'm on.  So what I'm simply saying is that instead of getting mad at a team that sucks and raping them, you have at least these options:

1.  Switch teams to make the teams more balanced
2.  Find a server that doesn't have such a problem with unbalanced teams

Point taken, I'm just saying it's not all about stats.  You can still have fun (and not ruin others) and contribute to your stats at the same time.

Well we changed the rule about allowing the uncaps to be raped once all the flags were captured like 5 or 6 months ago.  So our server HAD a poor player base (according to your statement).  We're fine now.  I'm not really sure how you measure the quality of a player base in a server though (player rank? I don't know).

Your description of rape in the I/O servers sounds like it really sucks.  Not sure why I would ever want to play anything like that.  You're right about the fact that in our server the team in the uncap can defend itself with their vehicles.  So I'll give you that one.

Guess my whole point is just that I like to have fun and I like to try and make sure other people don't have a shitty time too.  In a game that's almost 3 years old, points or stats really aren't that important.

Hmmm, that is interesting that it didn't affect your server.  I think if people know ahead of time that it's expected to happen and a server can build a reputation for it being acceptable, then the players who tolerate it or accept it will play there.  Without the known reputation for it or without players expecting it when they come to a server, I think it hurts the population more.

I've never played I/O servers before, but I would imagine people wouldn't get as frustrated with it.  It's usually the jets, choppers, tanks, etc. raping that tend to be the most frustrating.  That's why we allow infantry to attack the uncap but not vehicles, which is essentially the same in an I/O server since there are no vehicles to use there.

So in a sense, as far as uncaps go, our server has similar gameplay to I/O servers except we don't allow attacking with arty in the uncap.  So in a sense, if you play I/O and like to attack the uncap, you could do the same thing in our server.  Just saying in a sense, we sort of agree in a roundabout way.

Because I'm letting you know what I've learned from my experiences.  I've learned that players quit playing when they get raped as described in my post you quoted.  I just figured that since the only way to play the game in ranked mode is to play in public servers with other players operated by other players, that I could offer some of my experience in running a server.  Without people ponying up the money to provide a server to everyone else, you wouldn't be able to play the game.  Just thought I could offer some insight from my perspective as the operator of a server.  Is that offensive to you? 

Also, I'd say less than half my posts have any mention of our server.

Hmmm, I always thought the object of the game was to have fun.  I've usually found that when people stop having fun, they stop playing.  I'd rather play.  If I was doing this professionally and my livelihood depended on it, then I would feel differently.  However, I do this just for fun and to relax.

Yeah, I probably shouldn't have lumped you in the group of the other quotes.  They seemed to follow in the same line though.  I wasn't really taking issue with your statement, but rather just using it to show that perhaps the servers with rules appear to be more popular because of the fact that they do have rules.  It was responded that servers with rules tend to have clans that support them and can help get them populated.  That's true, but I guess it just shows more that rules are preferred for most people.  If they weren't then there would be more servers without them, right?  If rules are disliked (or rather "gay" rules), wouldn't there be more clans that start servers without them?

And if you guys don't find being on a dominating team boring, then I guess you don't have any problems.  It should give you plenty of opportunity to baserape.  In my opinion, I find it incredibly boring to be on a dominating team, or rather being in matches that the teams are so unbalanced in general.  I don't necessarily care about winning or losing, I'd rather have close matches where you have to try your best.  Even with trying to make sure teams are balanced and matches are close, I still have a 1.52 win/loss ratio (1796/1183).  So you can still have close matches and still win.  You don't need to dominate another team to win.

I was just suggesting instead of complaining about a team getting stuck in an uncap, you could try to help balance the teams and join their side.  I just thought that you wanted to have more fun and it appeared from the comments that watching a team sitting in an uncap was not fun.  So I just made a suggestion, which is why I posed my comment in the form of a question, not a demand.

Of course you're not obliged to switch teams.  I just suggested it as a way of making it more interesting than nade spamming or sniping an uncap because there is literally no action anywhere else.

I guess from my playing, I usually find it more fun when the teams are relatively evenly matched and the ticket counts are close.  I merely thought others might agree with me.  But if you want to stay on a dominating side and be bored, you have every right to do that.

Why not just join the other team and help them win then?  Seems very boring to just sit and watch them in the uncap or snipe at them.  I think it would be more fun to cap some flags.  I must be crazy or something though because obviously it's way better to baserape.

Exactly, I like to have discussions.  It's a little difficult though with responses like the ones I quoted above.  I don't know, some people don't care to discuss things though (even on a discussion forum, haha).

Well we just try to make sure everyone has fun, not just some people.  Sorry if that offends you.  If you only find baseraping fun, then there are plenty of other servers for you.  I was only meaning that it's different when you run a server because you want people to have fun it, that's all I meant.  It sucks to watch people get pissed off while playing in our server, so we try to minimize that as much as possible by making sure the teams are even and by having rules to tend to keep most people happy.

I'm curious though, if our server has "gay" rules, are there any rules you do find acceptable?  Or is BF2 perfect the way it is in terms of gameplay rules?

Doing it to get lots of easy kills is sad actually.  It's sad that you would get enjoyment from basically shooting fish in a barrel (not the same, I know, but very similar).  It's like beating a 4 year old at checkers.  What does it prove?  It proves how much the other team sucks, right?  Why is it fun to play against another team that sucks?  I would rather be on the losing team and help them than be associated with a team that baserapes.

To prove what?  You're so much better than them?  What other reason is there to baserape?  It's fun?  That is an odd way to have fun.

I guess I've never understood what's fun about being on a team that's raping.  It's not really what the game was intended to be like.  It's boring because nothing really gets accomplished except that you piss the other team off, oh and you prove how uber good you are, right?  Get those stats nice and high?  Sounds like fun.

1. If the commander is dropping arty on the e's uncap, chances are they do not have any flags and in which case, they deserve to get artied.
2. Oh you gave me a laugh here.  So thank you for that.  What's the name of your server?  Do you have one?  Last time I checked, games, particularly non-competitive gaming (not talking about scrims or ladders here), are supposed to be fun.  Getting raped by cheap players who don't know any other way to play is not fun.  I'd say most of the 7571 players who have played in our server in the last month (at the time of this post) would likely agree.

Furthermore, I really don't think our rules are very unusual at all.  I think there are many other servers that have similar rules.  So it appears that others would agree with me.

So please tell me the name of your server that you run so I know not to come and play on it.

I agree that some servers are rediculous with their rules.  I've never understood why a server would create rules that are hard to enforce.  Our server has basically 3 rules aside from the normal no TK'ing, hacking, etc.

1.  No dropping artillery on the enemy uncaps
2.  No attacking the uncaps with vehicles (on foot is fine)
3.  No attacking the TV station on Sharqi with the chopper unless all the other flags are captured (that map gets unbalanced really fast if the MEC chopper just circles TV and rapes it)

That's it.  The rules are actually very easy to enforce because it's easy to know when some breaks them.  And it gives people some wiggle room by allowing them to attack on foot.  As for you people complaining about someone using a TOW or IGLA in an uncap and shooting out, I simply ask why you are so close to their uncap that they could hit you with that stuff?  I don't play SF, but maybe it comes into play more there.  On the vanilla maps our rules really don't create any issues.

For those of you who say you rape the uncaps because it's fun, you sure do have a twisted sense of fun.  Do what you want on those servers that allow it I guess.

It auto-admins for all the things that the developers didn't build into the game.  The creator of this program is taking feature requests in his forums.  I requested that the program allow infantry to attack uncaps but not vehicles and he said it will be built into the final version.

So this program would make it impossible to break the rules the pub servers create by autokicking people who break them.
