Not exactly the world's shiniest review for what is supposed to be a revolution in OS's. Vista is a bundle of flaws and authoritarian restrictions that need to be ironed out before I'll consider.

The OS runs smoothly and I have an AMD XP Barton 2800+, 2 gigs of DDR PC3200, and an AGP 7800GS.

My weakest link by far is my CPU, and as I said. It runs smoothly.

Btw to the OP.. your review is spot on. I love the new features. My PC is turning more and more into a work platform as I progress through college than a gaming platform, so performance drops don't really concern me. I have my Xbox 360 for gaming now.


Still debating whether I want to activate my copy or save it for a new comp. They did give me 2 serials though... so I might waste one.


Visually pleasing. XP drivers seem to work fine. WMP11 is sexy, as is Firefox with a Vista theme on here. The "Show active panels" button is killer, as is the fluid motion of opening and closing stuff. The transparency is a nice touch as well. The intro screen is more polished, and the login is appealing to the eye.

The file structure is definately different than previous versions. Personally I like it better, as well as the start menu, which is less cluttered.


ETA:: The included backgrounds have to be some of the nicest I've ever seen included on an OS.


When you spend 35 hours a week doing programming or circuit design on a comp, having it appealing to the eye is very comforting.

Good things can happen!


Tonight I was able to get her one.

She was calling random places like she sometimes does when she has nothing to do.

I heard her on the phone with Walmart.


Her - "do you have any Wiis"

Walmart - "Actually.. we have 2"

Her - "What!?????..... I'm coming NOW"



We got there 25 minutes later (It's a long drive there).

And saw a guy ringing up 2 Wii's at the cash register. I was about ready to lay down an offer to this guy.

But there was a 3rd one on the shelf, hidden that the original guy on the phone didnt see. The guy who bought 2 was originally gonna buy all 3, but heard that a young lady was driving frantically there to buy one, so he only bought 2.

Still some decent people out there. I was gonna go back and thank him after I heard that story from the lady who worked there, but he was gone before I could.

My girlfriend has been wanting one of these since last year and has been waiting patiently for one. Everytime we're at a store, she runs to the electronics section only to get a depressed look on her face, then makes me ask the people if they have any in the back, which is annoying cus I hate asking people things.

I've had my Xbox 360 for a month or so and shes started buying games for it.

It's cutting into my gametime(we live together). I need a Wii for her .




So now... Where the FUCK do I get one of these things? Ebay has seemed to ruin the Wii. Ebay is averaging 1500 units on there at any given time. It seems like all of them are getting bought by these capitalist pigs to get sold for profit.


I've tried calling local stores and finding shipment times, but no one seems to know anything. I've tried calling on days of shipments just to see if they happened to get some in on THAT shipment, but no one seems to know anything. I've tried reserving them, to no avail. I've had to ask every store I've been in about them and 9 times out of 10 people laugh at the question.


So where are people getting these damn things???? Because obviously people are.


EDIT:: This isn't a last minute ditch effort. I've been persueing one of these unicorns for 2 months now since after the christmas rush.

Yes, you need to reformat if you install a new motherboard. When XP is first loaded, it installs crucial files specific to the motherboard.

SCSI is SCSI. SATA is SATA.

Biggest clue is the cable. SCSI has an even more absurdly wide ribbon than IDE, oh and its daisychain.

I have wireless internet (802.11G) in the apartment.

2 story apartment.

Wired internet upstairs.

Wireless downstairs.

Xbox360 downstairs.


I want Xbox Live, So I'm trying to take a laptop with both wireless connection and a wired connection ports to make an access point on Windows XP.


How do I do it?

Wireless connects to my router upstairs. Xbox connects to my 10/100 port. Both get internet.

Any tips would be appreciated.

From what I father, the OP doesn't own a gun. Hunting also requires a permit/tags in most states and from the sound of it, they don't go shooting much.


I really doubt killing/gutting/cleaning/packing/storing/eating an animal is on their agenda, when they could do something so much simpler, like go to a range, rent a gun, and plink at a peice of paper for a few hours instead of committing to the endeavor I mentioned previously.

I drove one of those when they first entered the country.... I forget the year, but there were 500 that entered the US when they were first released.... 2002 or 2003 I beleive.

Was a wash boy for a Porsche dealership . Nothing exciting, but I saw all the new models. They received 4 of them at that dealership. All were spoken for, and I got to drive 2 of em. Also got to drive the new Audi RS6 when it was first released, as well as the A8.

No offense but the GT3 was the lame retarded kid of the bunch when it came to the luxury aspect of owning one of those beasts. Was stripped out, had no back seats, and a skimped out stereo system. Cheaper sticker price, but you got what you paid for, a light chasis and an engine. That be it. I'm sure its fun in highspeed, but I never got it out of 1st gear.... parking lot was too damn short .

I was 21 when I went with my GF, but this is what we did.



Visited all the hotels.


Irish Pub at the NYNY.
Big Apple Bar at the NYNY.

The VooDoo Lounge at the RIO. (A MUST if you're old enough).

Coyote Ugly at NYNY.

Roulette tables.. anywhere really.


Be sure to checkout the Bellagio, the Wynn, TI, NYNY, The Forum Shoppes at Caesar's and of course the Eifel Tower at the Paris.

Good places to eat include the ESPN @ NYNY, Monte Carlo Pub & Grill or the Blues place (the name escapes me) at the Mandalay Bay.


Some of the under 21 attractions that are also interesting. The art gallery at the Bellagio, Shark Reef at Mandalay Bay. TI Pirate Show. Bellagio Water show. Rollercoasters at the Stratosphere & NYNY. Also one at the Aladdin I think. The Show at the RIO that happens nightly in the main casino area. IMAX theatre at the Luxor. MGM to see the lions.

Thats really all I can remember right now.

But if you're of age... get drunk... get the parents drunk and have fun. They may be old, but even mom and dad can party. I guarantee it.

To the OP::

Drop the textures to mid/low and see how it works.

Also check the tacked thread on how to optimize the game for a tip on tweaking your Punkbuster config.

Could be running out of RAM causing a speed decrease while you're storing memory to your HD as well...

Lowering the textures would help solve that.

Log back in... comp freezes loading BF2... reboot.

Start up comp... log back in... join a new server..... Crash to desktop...

Log back in... join a different server.... spawned with 15 tickets left on the losing side, and got like 2 points....

Few years ago when I was sleeving my PSU cables to clean up my interior, I accidentally sleeved a molex splitter wrong and accidentally swapped the 5V wire with the 12V. The wires on my PSU were color coded, so it was easy to distinguish, and I tested everything before hooking stuff back up, but forgot to test the splitter.

Zapped an 80GB HD and a DVD-ROM drive.

Powered on and heard a loud POP, and smelt smoke.

Never heard of a 10 guage one, but it's basically an over/under setup with 2 barrels. Top is usually a shotshell, bottom a rimfire.

Playing commander is just asking for an ulcer as NO one understands the concept of teamwork in this mod. And it's CRUCIAL seeing as a wave of tanks can take out an entire series of flags. I watched 2 tanks push back 20 people today. 2!

Regardless of anyone playing commander, I think the teams I've been on in the past 2 days have lost 14 out of 15 games.

Do they squad up? Sure. Do they listen to the commander? Hell no.

Do they defend flags? Hell no.

Do they contribute? Hell no.

Frustrating......

Very true, indeed. I dont think a draft is a good idea because I know when I am getting shot at i dont want one of those draftees that didnt wanna join up voluntarily by my side covering my ass. However I think we do need some sorta mandatory service for high school grads. Europe does it and it seems to work rather well. Anyways the media does tend to make things rather hard.

Was being a bit facetious with the draft idea, moreso for a bit of irony.

I don't think I'd want a media vulcher covering my 6 either.

I do agree with mandatory service though. I, myself, wasn't able to sign in due to medical conditions & flat feet . But that's another story alltogether
