Guardians of the Galaxy: 7/10

I admit... I was overhyped for this one. I enjoyed it, but it wasn't as good as I hoped/thought/wanted it to be.

Yes, a 1. Billed as the unofficial sequel of Knocked Up, it was just a spin-off, where the main characters from Knocked Up are never even mentioned, even though they are the siblings of the main characters here. I liked Knocked Up, so I thought it would have to be decent. At least have a few laughs. But no. You get the idea an hour in, but decide to finish it anyway, as it has to be about over. Then at the 1.5 hour mark, it still seems like it is wrapped up and done. So you check the time on it, and YOU STILL HAVE 45 MINUTES LEFT!
Let me save you some time: They fight. A lot. Not funny fighting. Like actual emotionally and mentally abusive fighting that just reminds you of that one couple you know that you try to avoid. Yes, there are some things in it that you will "get" if you  are married and around 40... But it is so over the top and pushed too far, and repetitive, that it isn't funny. You could shorten each 5 minute scene into a 10 second punchline and get it. Example: wife is giving husband impromptu oral, kids come knocking on the door right that minute fighting and bickering. Yup, that is what marriage with kids can be like.) But then the scene goes on for 5 more minutes of the parents screaming obscenities at the 14 and 8 year olds, then are shocked later when the 14 year old uses the language back to them... But they don't bother to punish it or anything... No, just like "Huh, she used bad language." And then move on. Other awesome tidbits are such cliched moments as "Oh noes, he farted in front of me, where has the magic gone?" And meetings with an accountant.

Save yourself two and a half hours of life and just go get into a miserable, abusive relationship. It is less painful in the end.

I agree with you... That was why I said an overrated 7... It really didn't deserve it... But a 6 seemed a tad low... So yes, as nitpicky as it may sound, a 6.5 or so is probably far more accurate.

Robocop 2014 - 6/10

You come out of the theater thinking it was better than it was... A few days later you realize it wasn't awesome. Everything was all packaged too nicely. Likable characters turned pointlessly evil for no reason except to have bad guys in the movie... And people still follow them, cause hey, they're the boss. Really it is one of those movies that you suspend belief and kinda enjoy, but then you can't help mentally pick apart later. Everything felt kinda forced. And it all wrapped up too nicely. And there really wasn't enough action. The action it did have was kinda...pointless. He fired around like a cleric in Equilibrium, totally unharmed... Then goes from perfect to so damaged he can barely function instantly every time. I don't know. I wanted it to be awesome. I wanted to love it. I tried to convince myself it was really good. It just wasn't.

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty: 8/10

Really really good. Beautiful movie. Depressing as hell, though I don't know that it is supposed to be. One of those movies you watch and then go make some changes in your life.

Ender's Game: 8/10

As a huge fan of the books, I can say I am very happy with the movie. It was like a nostalgia smorgasbord. The only downside at all (and it is also a plus) is that it could have been 30 minutes longer. It hit a couple points where I starting thinking "They aren't going to fit everything in... Or they are going to rush it..." And they did skip a lot of the battleschool matches that showed his adaptation and frustration and just some of his problem solving genius. But I also totally understand why a 2.5 hour movie would be a negative for most people.

I definitely recommend it. Clooney's return proved to be somewhat of a record skip for me. First off it seemed so ridiculously unbelievable and when it was revealed to be a fantasy my reaction was more of a "well duh". Probably would have worked better if it came across as more unreal from the get-go - like the cliche of having a lone character suddenly be in the company of a lost partner which lets you know it's a hallucination. Instead it's presented as if the movie expects you to believe it's actually happening, meaning you're kind of scoffing at the whole thing as it goes on before it returns to credibility with an air of "woah betcha didn't see that coming".

Lastly with the focus so much on a series of "how can it possibly get worse" action scenes it borders on taking it too far. At the very end when you've had a frantic escape into the Chinese station as it re-enters the atmosphere and is pelted by debris, the frantic re-entry of the capsule, the landing, the capsule sinking, Bullock unable to get out of the capsule, and then Bullock sinking in her space suit and having to get out of it before finally swimming to the surface - it just seems like it never ends. She swam through a bunch of weeds and judging from some giggling around me in the theatre I'm guessing others were thinking exactly what I was and expecting her to get tangled in the damn seaweed next. I was just thinking it was enough. The film delivered more than enough thrills and it was wrapping up but it seemed to want to try the "it's not over" game too much. It's like at the end of the horror movie when the seemingly dead killer gets up and needs to be put down again. Except they wanted to do it two more times after that.

All in all a worthy film and a fun film-going experience that most likely won't be able to be replicated by watching it at home. It's exceptionally well shot and well edited and the sound mixing and score is expertly applied but is let down in enough areas where I don't think it will stand the test of time.

And I totally agree with you on the Clooney Returns part of the movie. That was what really broke me out of the film. I knew it had to be a hallucination, and if by chance it wasn't, it discredited the whole movie... Now, if they had used a stranger claiming to be from the Chinese station that claimed they saw her out there but their comms were damaged, so they launched a rescue mission... Well, I would have totally bought that... But then there wouldn't have been any real point to it except to trick you... And a movie that does something that doesn't advance the storyline with the sole purpose of tricking the viewer is pretty lame.

Gravity: An Overrated 7/10

Was it interesting? Yes. Did it keep my attention and have good pacing? Yes. It was seriously overhyped though. Mind not blown. Replay not needed. Worth a watch, but seriously, IMAX 3D was not enough to make this more AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Everyone said it is the same advancement in graphics as Avatar, but um, no. This was like watching a typical Discovery Channel IMAX Space Special with actors getting in the way of the pretty blue planet. Yes, it was pretty. But it wasn't the most amazing thing I had ever seen as I was led to believe.

Totally agree. I still didn't like it, but it was way better than Twilight. And I also agree about the dining room. That was one of the things that prompted my good sets and costumes comment. Everything int hat house was amazing looking.

Beautiful Creatures: 4/10

Another "Tween" book made into a blah movie. Better than most of the rest of them (I.E. Twilight, The Host), it was still on the "wasted my time" side of the fence. What makes these movies worse is constantly hearing "The book was better" and "they screwed this up from the book." So not only was it bad as a stand alone, it was bad to fans of the original material. This one actually started off really strong. I like the narrative type of start to a movie. It was enjoyable. Jeremy Iron's character stole the movie, then was (comparatively) barely in it after that. If you had cut out the two main characters, and just made it about him, it would have been better... If you are really into sets and costumes, you should definitely give it a rent.

In short, it follows a recurring formula of recent trends:
1) Crappy and uninteresting love story that isn't good enough to be a movie.
2) Add supernatural anything.
3) Ignore the supernatural aspect of it except for a small part that makes it hard for the main characters to be together.
4) Add a strong supporting role and make him do all the heavy lifting.
5) Try to make it look like Tim Burton was involved.

GI Joe Retribution: 6/10

It was entertaining while it was on, but could have been better. It fell apart so thoroughly toward the end that it left a bad taste in the mouth... Could have either a) Forgotten the Joes and just had the ninjas and been better or b) Forgotten the Joes anytime they were outside of a cool toy-based vehicle. Except Lady Jaye, of course. Makes me wish they didn't fubar the Wonder Woman TV show that she was supposed to be in. Basically the normal Joes were like the normal Military guys in Transformers, starring in a movie without the Transformers... Which when you think about it, is really pretty accurate.

The bottom line, GI Joe Retribution somehow either needed more action or more story, but tried to have just enough of each that they only seemed to constantly interrupt each other.

The giant steel rods are just dropped and gravity pulls them down? Does terminal velocity not apply?

If the giant rods are just dropped and create a bigger than nuke explosion, then wouldn't self destructing all the satellites just create a lot of falling giant nuke rods?

I try not to think during action movies, but that little bit that seemed thrown in at the end to actually make a storyline to tie it all together.

Jack the Giant Slayer: 5/10
Pretty meh. Could have been better. Could have been worse. I think the biggest problem with this is that is was just too middle of the road on everything. It tried to be a dark violent scary... family movie? Yeah, it was touted as a family movie... But it was too scary for the little kids, but incredibly edited away from actually showing anything... Half the army in the movie were killed, but none were really shown... But then exploding eyeballs further creeped out the kids. Had a lot of potential... It just never went anywhere and couldn't make up its mind.

The Incredible Burt Wonderstone: 8/10

I was expecting this to be terrible. It is overall rated poorly... But we laughed through the whole thing. It may not be Oscar winning material, but it was funny and enjoyable. I was very happy we grabbed this one tonight.

21 & Over: 1/10
To be fair, I quit at the halfway point. To be doubly fair, it is only the second movie in the last 5 years that was so bad I had to just turn it off. I couldn't even occupy myself with other work while it was on, cause it was too annoying to ignore. The extent of the "humor" in this movie was bad language. Every other sentence was a curse word, and I guess that is supposed to be funny. Every person in the movie was a douchebag. The main characters were douches. The people they ran into on their journey were douches. The parents were douches. Actually, that's not fair... I would rather hang out with literal douchebags than with the characters in this movie.

Well, of the last few crappy rating ones:

Cash Back was recommended by several friends for being very artistic and deep. I should have understood that as "emo."

Gothika was recommended by several other friends for being a really good trippy thiller movie "If you liked Sixth Sense, you will LOVE Gothika."

Identity Thief I expected to be funny. Jason Bateman, Jon Favreau, Amanda Peet, Robert Patrick... I like all of them... Melissa McCarthy hasn't really done anything I like and really gets on my nerves, but I keep expecting her to do SOMETHING funny to make me see why everyone loves her so much. I am sure I will watch The Heat when it comes out...

The Host my wife wanted to see. She had read the book and it was "so much better than that Twilight crap." Which led to "The book was SO much better than the movie." Which it would have to be.

Regardless, we don't watch a ton of movies anymore because they all seem so crappy. There is a lot I want to see that is coming out, but it will have to wait until DVD for most of them. And a lot of those will probably end up being crappy, but I can hope.

The Host: 2/10
Written by the same author that wrote the Twilight junk... And Twilight was WAY better. Ugh... Boring movie that never actually does anything or goes anywhere.

Pacific Rim: 7/10
It was what it was. Voltron vs Godzilla. It did it well it was entertaining. The action was shot/CGIed better than a Transformers movie. Not much to it, but I enjoyed it. Hoped to see fake-Knives-Chau get the highlights knocked out if her hair, but oh well. At least Glados made an audio appearance. Some cheese, but not as much as I expected. I thought it would be awful, but was dragged along by friends. It was worth going in group. However, a lot of people were saying it is the best 3D movie to date. I don't think the 3D added much. Unlike some action movies, it didn't hurt either though. So if you see it, don't feel pressured to see it one way or the other.


Identity Thief: 4/10
Expected this one to be funny. Was awful. 4 might be high. Loved the cast, thy just didn't do anything for this one. Douchebag people that you are supposed to like after a while because the movie tells you to, even though they are still just douchebags. Wasn't funny. Neither myself or my wife laughed at all and both of us ended up playing games on our phones while this was on. Lame.

Cash Back: 2/10

A crappy movie that thinks it is artistic and witty. Truth is, I could sum up the movie for you in 30 seconds, and you wouldn't really be missing anything except some nudity.


Video Game High School: 8/10
I am guessing this was originally some webisodes or something a la The Guild. It was a little cheesy, but even the cheesy stuff made me laugh. The special effects were simple, but actually really really good and added to the movie. I don't know what the full appeal is here, it was something like a bunch of college film students would make, but really well done, none the less.


Gothika: 2/10
Predictable. Horrible acting. Horrible directing. Horrible writing. Who feels a need to say everything they do out loud? Example: The power goes out. The character, in a room by herself, says out loud "Well the generator is on the fritz again, I guess I will go reset it." or some such... Or when guards are looking for someone, they loudly announce "Well I guess she's not in here, let's go look somewhere else" before leaving the room. Ugh. This is also like what a bunch of college film students would have made... Only they would have had a huge budget and still failed the class.

I don't like Crowe, but he was pretty amazing in it, to be honest... As I said before, I would have enjoyed it more if they had just stayed on Krypton the whole movie and played out the politics and intrigue there. Forget Superman and Earth...

I think 3D would be rough... It had a lot of that Transformers-Style action sequences... You know, the type that is moving super fast, and zoomed in really close, so you don't really see it happening as much as see a lot of shaky, blurry movement and hear the sound effects... Not all of it mind you... Just the important fights.

Really, overall, I think the trick is to watch it like a new character, and be happy when it seems like Superman... Because it just didn't have that Superman feel to it.

Man of Steel: 7/10

Right off the top, any film is going to lose at least a point for using shaky-cam through the whole thing. It is a damn blockbuster, bot a youtube video. Knock that crap off. Beyond that, it was entertaining for the most part, but felt like it jumped all over the place like a case of Super ADHD. My hardcore Superman fan friends hated it. My medium Superman fan friends thought it was ok. My friends that didn't know anything about Superman thought it was pretty good. The part on Krypton was my favorite, and I would have been more interested in watching a movie entirely about them than about Superman on Earth.  I think overall, my biggest problem was the below big spoiler:

Regardless, Superman doesn't kill... That is pretty much the one rule with him. Why would you change that of all things?


Regardless, if you watch it as an entirely new Superman movie, it was ok. If you expect it to be just like the comics, you will be disappointed.

Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters 4/10

As I have said before, my "5" rating is the totally neutral point. 5 is where I don't feel like I wasted my time, but don't feel like I gained anything either. This movie was awful. It probably deserves a lower rating, but somehow I didn't really feel like it wasted my time HORRIBLY, but it was definitely on that side of the fence. It has a lot of potential that they just never played on or paid off with. It kept my attention just enough to not rate it lower, but not enough to keep me from wishing that I spent that time doing/watching something else. A "3" rating would have been perfectly acceptable also.

Warm Bodies: 6/10
Loved the internal monologue. That was the only part I really enjoyed though and it was sporadic. If it had narrated the entire movie, it would have been much better.

Multiplicity: Another Ruined Childhood Memory/10

Hangover 3: 6/10
Not nearly as funny as the first two. I laughed pretty hard at a few scenes, but they were few and far between. They broke away from the formula, probably because everyone complained that 2 was just 1 all over again, but while that was true, 2 was just as funny as 1 all over again. This one is not. The after-the-credits scene was better than the whole movie.

Drama in the Forum: 2/10

Really seemed to have a lot of self involved characters that couldn't really stay on a topic. This movie seriously seemed to just derail itself over and over again. Not in a Seinfeld "movie about nothing" sort of way, but more in a zealot versus extremist political argument that leads to things blowing up. However, due to the low budget, there were no real explosions on screen, just a lot of unbridled tension being crammed into a small time frame by actors who used to be awesome, but are really willing to show up in anything now-a-days. Not what I was expecting at all from the quality of talent. I guess maybe they are washed up. If there is a sequel, I hope it picks one storyline, and focuses on it, instead of  just prancing all over the entire lifespan of the characters, totally without relevance.

This is one of those movies that is better when friends randomly quote it than the actual movie itself.

Django Unchained: 8/10

I'm not a big Tarantino fan, but this was probably one of my favorite things by him. It was pretty good. If the last half had the feel of the first half, I would have rated it in the 9 range.

Jack Reacher: 9/10

Not a Tom Cruise fan, but this was a solid movie. I enjoyed it a lot. With the exception of one "Come at me bro" moment

where he throws down a gun in order to fight someone it was one of those movies that followed my train of thought. Little touches like "Oh come on, he wouldn't touch that phone and leave fingerprints there" are quickly followed up with him wiping the phone down, for example. Unlike some movies where the main character jumps to random conclusions for no reason, the reasons really make sense here. Really didn't know what to expect going into it, and didn't see any trailers for it. Had a similar feel to the Bourne movies to me, but way way better in my opinion.

Iron Man 3: 7/10
Better than 2, not nearly as good as 1.

Finally watched the remake of The Day the Earth Stood Still...

A 10 minute scene about how they need a super scientist to give the alien a shot to make him tell the truth... Then they make a big deal about how the woman will turn her back on science and be so unethical to do it.

Then they already have the serum prepared and she literally only has to poke the needle in his arm and be rushed out... A job any of the people in the room could have done to begin with.

That pretty much sums up the movie.

Also, I kinda agreed with the aliens. All the people should have been wiped out. They never really had a good reason not to. Lame.

First season was awesome. Second season got really weird with all the mutant crap.

Right, but in all due fairness, it did suck enough to suck as a stand-alone movie...

The Great and Powerful Oz: 8/10
Unlike most movies, this one actually seems to just get better the more I think about it. It was a little too campy at the beginning and I really worried the whole movie would be that way, but it straightened up and really worked very well. I liked the whole feel of the movie. Being fair, I don't think James Franco would have been my first choice for the role, and think it could have been a little better with someone else in the lead, but I don't think he really hurt the overall film or anything. He just adds a little more "campy" to the movie than it needed. The movie was really good however, and the sense of wonder, beauty, and nostalgia was all there like I had hoped it would be.

A Good Day to Die Hard: 6/10

Make sure you take some motion sickness pills before you see this movie, because it is one helluva ride! Actually that is a lie... You should take the motion sickness pills because the camera work in this movie sucks. It was apparently filmed by the same guy that filmed Cloverfield, the guy that filmed Blair Witch, and Michael J Fox. The camera bounces all over the place, randomly unfocuses and refocuses, randomly zooming in on something. Framing the shot so tight on a character that you just look at his mouth, nose, and eyes for a 5 minute talking spree. Still, it is almost painful for me to rate it that low. I had really high hopes. I love Bruce Willis. I love the Die Hard movies. But being honest... I probably should rate it a 5. It just wasn't that good. The special effects timing was off. (See spoilers) The characters were...angsty... and over emotional when it wasn't needed... Or had no emotion at all when it would make sense. The humorous lines were long and forced into short gaps in the action. (See spoilers).

In a scene where someone hits Bruce Willis in the face with a gun, he clearly gets knocked down before the guy swings.

In a scene where a large truck knocks cars off the road, glancing blows would make the car fly totally off the road... Sometimes before the truck hit them.

In a scene where a bad guy shoots a guard 10 feet away, there is a full second between the gun firing and the bullet hitting the guard.

Etc, etc, etc...

Fitting long "humorous lines" into small gaps in the action.

In a scene where a helicopter is shooting millions of rounds at Jr, Dad has to attach a chain to the helicopter and to a vehicle, using the vehicle to throw off the helicopter's aim. He pauses as he puts the vehicle in gear to say "Oh the things we do for our children... Yippee Kay Ay, Mother Fucker" and only then proceeds to try to save his son's life.

And several more similar times where stopping to mumble off some hurried lines before saving someone's lives. Most often a Dante Hicks-esque "But I'm supposed to be on vacation."

The Last Stand: 6/10
Great movie for a large group of guys to go to for a birthday party. One terrible terrible actor that luckily was only in it a few minutes. Another couple mediocre (at best) actors. Several funny moments. Several ridiculously out there stupid things. An awful (almost non existent) story. Characters you don't care about in the slightest. Still had fun. Would probably have disliked it if I saw it alone on DVD.

Seven Psychopaths: 7/10
I think I was the only one in the group to really like it, but I enjoyed it. It was long and slow, but had funny lines, great characters, and really neat "mini" stories inside the story. It did feel like it went on forever though.

Here Comes The Boom: 5/10
For me alone would have been about a 4, but it was a PG (something I could watch with the kids) movie and they enjoyed it, so it was an ok time. A few pretty funny scenes. Not hilarious though.

Men In Black 3: 7/10
Rather enjoyable. I think it might have been the best overall of the three. Then again, I don't remember a single thing about the second one.

Dark Knight Rises:
6/10 if it is not a Batman movie.
4/10 as a Batman movie.
It just never once felt like "Batman." This was like generic script #65442 that they just plugged Batman characters into where they fit, or left them out/rewrote them where they didn't. I understand that slapping a popular franchise on top of any movie will help it do well, but this one just didn't have that Batman feeling at all. Barely any stealth. Certainly no detective. More street brawler. Less barely contained rage brood and more emo feeling sorry for himself. A lot of belief suspension. A lot of watching Bane talk with less expression than Darth Vader. A lot of wondering what someone (especially Bane) said, but not enough interest to actually care what you missed.

So basically, if you want a fairly mindless action movie with a guy that can heal really quickly, and works out a lot, then puts on a suit to become better than everyone else, then this is it.

If you want Batman and his sneaking, stealth, detective, figuring things out, planning, ambushing, and being one step ahead the whole time... Go play Arkham City.

And since the bomb had a 6 mile blast radius, and he didn't finish kissing Selina and get off the ground and really going until about 30 seconds were left, wouldn't that mean he would have to be traveling at about 720mph for that whole flight?

And seriously, all their "calculations" would just say things like "About 5 months." So how would they have it timed down to the minute? Especially people that didn't have access to look at the timer?

Did Talia want to die? She hit the button while she was still in the city...

The recurring theme on why Batman wore the mask was "Because anyone could be the Batman." Which lends to believe that anyone could be a hero. Yet in a City of over 12 million people, only the 3,000 cops were willing to make a stand?

Why did they have to make that jump when climbing out of the pit? It isn't like the wall was suddenly smooth... It looked the same all the way up. If nothing else, couldn't you climb around to that other ledge? They had tools and rope, couldn't they had done that a little safer and therefore more commonly? Why would you have a safety rope on someone, and then let them fall 50 feet before snapping to a stop at the end? Shouldn't you put a little tension on that thing?

The only stealth in the movie was him being "behind you" on a couple guys when he was with Selina and hitting a few guys with knock out darts from the shadows. Wait, he had knock out darts? Why didn't he use those on more people? Why didn't he use a handful of those on Bane? Why would BATMAN walk out through an open street in broad daylight and brawl against Bane Street Fighter style?

The Watch: 4/10
Really excited to see this one. Debated on turning it off to go do something else several times. Just never really got funny. Love Richard Ayoade from I.T. Crowd... But he just wasn't really utilized in this...

Expendables 2: 6/10
Not nearly as good as the first one. If you cut Chuck Norris out, it would have been a 5 at best. He was barely in it and still stole the movie. JCVD was awful and nearly ruined the movie... Even his fight scenes were lame. He never seemed like a threatening bad guy at all. He refused a role in the first one... Wish he had refused a role in the second one too. And what is up with mini-Thor? What about the new Lucy Liu? Could sly not have fallen for a chick his own age? I thought these movies were about the old guys. Why bring in fresh blood? Get it on with Linda Hamilton, Lucy Lawless, Michelle Yeoh, or Lucy Liu... Some other past their prime used to be an action star. Blah. Blah I say to the whole non-Chuck movie.

As I have said about 20 times in this thread... If I am willing to sit and watch it, I already have some interest in it. If I have some interest in it, it already has something about it that would most likely make it above average, or I wouldn't bother. If you totally randomized your movie watching, then yes, the average would probably be about a 5... But who does that? I usually decide what to watch... I don't usually click a randomization button and watch whatever it tells me to watch for the next 2ish hours.

Yeah, Silva just reminded me of Jaws as if he were played by John Malkovich. He had those Malkovich mannerisms in a Jaws-like body. Plus... You know.... The teeth.

Skyfall 4/10

Not a big Bond fan to begin with, but this one was just not doing it for me.

I heard they were going to revamp it to make it younger... I guess they meant in the next movie. They somehow made this one feel even older. This was was like watching Bond run around with my mother in law and Grizzly Adams.

Very little story. Very little villain scheme. Very little spy work. Very little overall action after the opening 20 minutes. Very long. Very slow. No gadgets. No figuring things out. No mystery. No wow factor. No caring about the characters. No emotion except a 10 minute woe is me section.

They could have made the movie totally about the villain and it would have been much more interesting. Being Jaws Malchovich.

I might have found it better if I had waited for DVD. As it is, I felt like I wasted a date night on it. Couldn't wait for it to hurry up and end so I could go home and go to sleep.

Wreck-It Ralph: 8/10

Really enjoyed it. Kids loved it. Wife loved it. All around good movie. Like Toy Story with video games. Did what it did really well. Casting was good. Could have had a little more "hidden" mature jokes to bring it up closer to Toy Story and the like. Lots of nostalgia.

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter 7+/10

I expected to hate it... I thoroughly enjoyed it. It was fun. It had a lull in the middle or it might have been higher. For such a stupid concept, it was surprisingly entertaining. Was working on a project that I ended up putting down to pay attention to the movie. That is the opposite of most movies lately. Watching again tonight with a group of friends. Might push the score up Slightly. Don't think it will go down.
