OK, so here's what happened.  I built the following machine:

mobo: Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3R
GPU: gigabyte GT 220
CPU: Intel Pentium E5200
RAM: G.Skill 2x1GB PC2 6400

My kid was in the middle of an online game when the computer went dark and shut down.  When I turn on the power i get the following:

all case fans power up, hard drive starts to spin, all LED lights on mobo light up.  The stock heat sink fan starts to spin for about 1 sec then stops.  The power stays on for 2-4 seconds then shuts down.  After 2-4 seconds the cycle starts again and will repeat until PSU is shut off.  BIOS won't post and im not sure where to go from here. 

I've done the following troubleshooting:  tried startup with one stick of ram and get the same result with either stick.  disconnected all drives etc and get the same result.

Gigabyte says the system needs a GPU, one stick of RAM and a CPU to post.

Given that i would doubt that both sticks of RAM crapped themselves, how do i determine if the CPU, GPU or mobo are the culprit?  I don't have spares to swap in (yet!!).

Yeah the 700W is a bit much, but it came bundled at Newegg with the case.  All the other parts were bundled as well and the whole rig showed up on my doorstep for only $588 (US).  I figured I couldn't pass it up for that price.  If I decide to get a new mobo in the future and get multiple GPUs I figured at least i would have the right case and PSU.

Just built my first machine and I already want to upgrade!

I use it to play BF2 and it handles everything just fine on high (1280 x 1024 res).  I am going to want to start playing Crysis and will eventually go with a higher res monitor.  I believe the components I picked will allow me to upgrade fairly easily but what do you think I should do first?

Here are the specs:

MoBo: gigabyte ga-ep45-ud3r (single pci x16)

It seems the first obvious upgrade is the video card, what do you think?

I've experienced US government preventative healthcare in the military.  When my wife was pregnant we spent our own money to deliver in the private sector because the quality of doctors and especially nurses just was not on par with those on the outside.  The "free" government healthcare I received was "flight surgeons" who had just graduated from medical school, hadn't done an internship let alone a residency but was diagnosing and treating folks.  Good doctors, but certainly not stars (yet). 

From what I've read, the UK is importing more foreign doctors now becuase people that used to go to medical school (because it was a lucrative career) are simply finding other higher paying jobs.  I don't want a second rate surgeon sticking his/her hands in my chest fiddling with my heart, but that's just me.  Hopefully I would be able to do what wealthy people from Europe, Canada, and other countries who have socialized medicine do when they have a major problem...hop on a plane and head to a country that has top notch medical facilities.  Who knows where that will be in 5 years if the US gets its socialized healthcare system.

Spanish class in HIGH SCHOOL.  I actually remember my teacher crying after it happened....yes I am that old!!

Tie one end of a rope around a 12-18' piece of a thick stick (broomstick or something, use something to keep the rope from spinning like duct tape) and the other around the dumbell (works better with a weight with a hole in the middle but a dumbell will work) and while standing hold the ends of the stick and twist it away from your body so you raise the weight off the floor.  Go the other way to let it back down under control.  Rinse and repeat!

Just keep your feet out from under the weight in case it slips.

Isn't a Q6600 even a bit much?  Why do you need a quad-core processor when games aren't really burdens on a CPU?  He could save money with a Q6600 or even drop to a Core 2 Duo and be fine.

Thanks for any input, what do you think of the GPU choices?

I am building my first computer (don't worry, I have a buddy that's done it who can help) and want to build something pretty specifically for gaming (just BF2 and COD4 for now).  I'd like to be able to upgrade the components in the future (RAM, CPU, video card(s) so I am looking for something somewhat future-proof.  I will start with a core 2 duo CPU (don't think I need a quad core yet).  I'm not going to mess with overclocking just yet.  I just want to build a solid rig that has future capabilities to upgrade.

Here are the 4 mother boards I am looking at that vary in price from $99-$209.  Let me know what you think.  Of note is the GA-X38 has 2x PCI-e 2.0 x16 slots that aren't in the summary.

So about average huh?  OK, I've never put one together myself but have a buddy who did so maybe I'll wait a bit and hit newegg to put together a really good system.

Costco (major US membership warehouse retailer) is now selling iBuypower gaming computers.  I understand iBuypower has disappointed some folks in the past, but Costco has a great return policy which eases my mind about buying a computer from them.  I also got some gift certificates from Costco for the holidays so I would come out of pocket about $600 to buy this machine.

I have 2 questions, 1) will this play BF2 and COD4 (which I don't own yet) on high settings and is it a good deal for the money?  I suppose I could always upgrade the video card in the future as it looks like the weak link, or will I get BF2 on all high settings with it?

It is not exclusive to BF2.  It even freezes up sometimes when my kids play internet games on miniclip.com

I've been playing BF2 for quite a while with no machine problems.  Recently while in game, my computer freezes completely.  I can't quit the game, can't Alt-F4, can't do anything except hold the power button in!!  I've uninstalled the game and reinstalled it with no luck.  It seemed to work OK for a while then froze up again.

I've got a rather old Radeon 9550 card (AGP).  I know I need an entire system upgrade, but if I can get by with a band aid until I can save enough $$$ to get a good system, I'm going to try to do that. 

Could my GPU be slowly dying?  It's just weird that I haven't had this problem for at least a year of game play.

Come on, coming from someone in Washington DC the murder capital of the USA???  LA isn't as bad as it's made out to be.  I was born and raised here and actually went to UCLA.  Yes we all thought the UCPD (campus and actually state cops as UCLA is a state school) was a bit overeager to push kids around, but what ever happened to "Yes Sir" when asked to do something by a police officer?  It used to be that people obeyed the cops and didn't push back just for the hell of it like this student did. 

I don't know if using a taser is a compliance measure in the training of the officers.  If it is than they did nothing wrong, but if a taser is to be used as a weapon and only if there is an imminent threat to the officers or the public, then the cops should be fired.  I would bet that tasing a person is what the police are trained to do to force people to comply with their orders.  It's non lethal and actually doesn't do much damage other than hurting like hell for a few seconds.

In the US, the Congress has allowed the military to be governed under the UCMJ as cited above.  From a former Marine Officer's perspective, the UCMJ supersedes the constitution as it governs what military members can and can't do.  For example it allows a commanding officer of sufficient rank to impression members in his command. 

As for the not speaking about elected officials, the way it's most easily explained is that if someone in the military is interviewed or quoted about virtually anything, (especially if he or she is in uniform), it is not the individual speaking, but the organization he or she represents.  So if you have a young Private or Lieutenant that blasts an elected official in public, it can be perceived as official statement and/or policy that applies to the entire service.   You don't want Privates or Lieutenants setting policy for the services!

Agree with unnamednewbie.  What part was offensive, "fat" or "lesbian."  As far as I can tell the word lesbian is exactly what the PC crowd calls lesbians, ummm because they are in fact lesbians!  He didn't call her a fat dyke (which would have been offensive).  I guess then that the word "fat" is offensive to people and shouldn't be used in broadcasting.  Wow.  Maybe the "fat lesbian" should stop stuffing her pie-hole with twinkies, walk a few miles and STFU.

I would go with the G36E and MG36.  They both have 3 round bursts which I thought I would hate, but they are great.  The MG36 I still use in Auto, but a 3 round burst is nice every once in a while.  They have the same sight picture (if you like the G36C).  The G36E is excellent, you can squeeze off several 3 round busts in a very short amount of time and you can heal yourself and others.

Maybe someone could enlighten me as to how Israel might make peace with the Palestinians?  Other than by committing suicide and leaving the middle east, how CAN there be peace? 

If Israel said today "lets have peace" what would happen?  Would the Palestinians say "OK, no problem let's all stop killing each other and we'll all live happily where we are?" or would they say "no peace until Israel leaves Palestinian land?"

What if Hamas or the PLO said "lets have peace"  would Israel say "OK we'll all live happily where we are", or "no peace until Palestinians leave Israeli land"

If you examine the answer to the question you will determine who wants peace and who wants the utter destruction of the other state.
