So prostitution, molestation and drug purchases are crimes they would still commit if the police were not involved.
Police are not forcing people into the situations; the police are just responding to the suspects actions to catch them committing a crime.

Javascript should never be used for form verification. All one has to do is disable Javascript in their browser and they can spam empty forms all day.Scorpion0x17 wrote:
JavaScript - should be used for simple, non-critical, data handling/checking - for example, verifying that user has filled out all required fields in a form - and for implementing 'dynamic page content' - i.e. content that changes in some way. It can also be used to generate 'common page content' - either static or dynamic.

I reiterate: This thread is a breeding ground for bad advice.
You're spending $1000 on just your case, psu, and harddrives. You can build a far more powerful rig if you make better choices.
Chitty, earlier in the thread you said XHTML is a combination of HTML, CSS, and Javascript. Then you went on to say that PHP is dying, when in fact is the fastest growing server-side language in popularity aside from Ruby. You even claimed flash was more important to learn than a server-side language for web development. You have absolutely no clue what you are talking about.chittydog wrote:
Scorpion, don't bother with Fancy. He's obviously a PHP zealot and has made up his mind to stick with older technology. I've gone through the process of showing junior developers how little they know often enough to realize it'll take too much effort to open his eyes in this thread. That's why I stopped listening to him after the first page of responses.

There isn't much point in developing a website for an offline resume/portfolio. There are much better alternatives out there. If this is for a web development position, then you better have that site live on the web.Scorpion0x17 wrote:

A scripting language is an interpreted programming language. You are essentially programming within in a program.

Why would you chose having a static navigation menu generated by Javascript over, let's say, a php include?
chittydog, I am convinced that you have no idea what you are talking about. AJAX is most powerful when used in combination with a server-side language. This allows you to retrieve data from and input data into a database without refreshing the page. Check out Digg's comment system to see it in action.chittydog wrote:
Great comments. I'd like to stress the importance of client-side code. We could say it's the future of web development, if we were still in 2005. AJAX is a client-side development methodology that can make your stuff look very slick. Java has their own version, but I don't recall the name. Look at Gmail, almost no page refreshes. Everything is smooth and acts like a desktop application, not a web page. Server-side scripting language (sorry, but had to get that jab in) won't allow you to do that. Everything you do with a language like PHP or classic ASP will give you a page refresh. That means you have to reload the whole page and reprocess all that logic again. I know Fancy keeps raving about it, and it is very popular amongst amateurs, but professionals know the difference (ie, the people who may be hiring you).
Keep this one thing in mind: no real video game is made with a scripting language.
This is one of those horrible examples of Javascript I was referring to. Static information, especially information as important as your navigation, should not be generated by Javascript unless you also have that same information in plain html elsewhere on the site. Search engines do not read content generated by Javascript and anyone who has Javascript disabled in their browser will not be able to use your site.Scorpion0x17 wrote:
The way I handle 'common page content' like 'contents bars' and so on is to generate them with javascript - this could be a simple as a single function call that looks something like:
contents.js:then, in every page file, you insert a <script>...</script> block that inserts the javascript generated contents list into the page:Code:
... document.write("... <a href="page1.html" target="mainbody">Page 1</a> <a href="page2.html" target="mainbody">Page 2</a> ...and so on... ..."); ...
page1.html:etc...Code:
... <script src="contents.js"></script> ...
Just be careful with how you use Javascript. There are a lot of horrible examples of it in use on the web. Don't validate forms or handle sensitive data with Javascript, that's for server-side languages. Also, don't use Javascript where CSS could be used instead (i.e. image rollovers).
You can either copy and paste the markup for your navigation into every document, or put it in a separate file and use a server-side language to include it into the main document (this saves you from having to update every page when you need to make changes to your navigation).
Never, ever, ever use frames.Vilham wrote:
1. Should i use them? eg for a table of contents down the left side or along the top, so that it stays the same throughout the website.
2. If i should how do i make it work like a table of contents. So far i can only make it change what is in its own frame and not what is in the other frame.
This has got to be a joke. Java is archaic and is primarily used in enterprise-level development. The only reason it still being used is because of its extensive libraries. A scripting language is a programming language.
PHP and Ruby are the fastest growing server-side languages. PHP is already extremely popular. The majority of your clients will most likely be using Linux Apache PHP MySQL servers. The majority of my development is done in PHP using the CakePHP framework (emulates the Model View Controller design pattern of Ruby on Rails).
I recommend learning server-side languages in this order:
1) PHP
2) Ruby
Do not listen to someone who obviously does not know what XHTML is and recommends Flash over PHP.
If you want to be developing tetris games for cell phones and PDAs, then Java is a great place to start. Reputable video games? No one uses Java.

IE7, while better than IE6, is still a bloated pile of shit. Poor CSS support and plenty of security holes.
It's not a matter of preference. It's Firefox or bust.
You do realize that IE7's CSS support is horrible, right?mafropetee wrote:
if you want more code support, or if you do some coding yourself (like custom myspace profiles) then IE7 is better.
if you want a custom interface and a little bit better organization, then firefox is better. it has custom skins that are easy to apply.
sometimes it just comes down to pure personal preference. i use both, but mainly IE7. the only time i use FF is if im on someones myspace and cant find the add button because their damn coding is screwed up, then i just use the "no page style" button.

If you really want to try and implicate discrimination you should look for statistical data that can show us how many Jews have attempted to get elected. Then we can compare the results.
