People are too concerned with their personal kd/r nowadays to want to help the team succeed.
The focus needs to shift towards a person's contribution to the team and penalise those who don't, or reward those who do.
Eg those who run around lone will gain less than those who move with their squad.
Squad changing should only be during death screen
and doesn't roll over till the next death to prevent squad hopping
I think during the match, you should only be able to see your own points and kd/r, while the scoreboard shows a ranking on who's contributing to the team and who isn't etc.
edit: not to say remove the whole stat tracking system altogether, but just make it so during the match people are looking more towards how they help the team and maybe just hide the intricacies of kd/r to something you have to click a few buttons to get to.

It doesn't necessarily need free roaming, but it should allow the player to have a certain amount of freedom to explore, and maybe get bonuses for finding alternative solutions to a problem (eg Deus Ex or Half Life), maybe reward them with extra items or backstory and not just tie them to a linear pathway where all the player can do is mindlessly press 1-2 buttons the entire time

I like to play these "simulator" style games because it allows you to try to get as close to doing the real thing, behind a computer, without actually doing it, due to various limitations like: I'm not in the military. I don't have the money to buy and tune a super awesome race car to drive on a track. Theres no way I would be allowed near a fighter jet to do stunts on. etc.
But yes, it's a very niche market, and it's probably better that way.

I'm right handed but use arrow keys
I remapped most buttons to the numpad as well as surrounding buttons like Insert, Delete, Home etc
Found no problems at all
Especially since the ACE menu is the right windows button and the program button next to it, I found it actually to be quite good
Salute button is numpad 9, so pretty much everything I need is within reach

I apologize for my post. I should have just ignored Andrew. I was mildly irritated by him pointing out something that was all ready pointed out by someone else. Perhaps I tend to rely on other people's opinion (read: EVE experience) too much, but from all I hear that isn't such a bad thing. Knowledge is passed on through the new players, it's a mechanism of EVE.

So, my todo list looks like:
Shield Operation/Management V, Weapon Upgrades V, Advanced Weapon Upgrade IV, Cruise Missile IV (No need for V, I'm using Arbalests), Jury Rigging IV, Shield Rigging IV, Energy Systems Operation V, Energy Management V.
That should close to perma-run Assasin's raven loadout, which I tweaked a bit (for instance, no faction stuff.)
