That is how it happens when you are shooting to protect yourself.  You don't pull the trigger 1 time and wait and see, then pull it again and wait.

The guy went stiff and fell down. He wasn't a threat at that point and officer should have known. He made the choice to kill the guy by shooting him on the ground 15 more times.

He should go to prison for that.

Wow, he put in a fresh clip that fast and unloaded on the corpse.

Some people live a sheltered life.  The officer was obviously firing at a perceived threat.  That is exactly what a person  would expect to see.  There was no pause for a kill shot, he unloaded on the guy quickly and desisively.  If it was a gun the kid had pulled he saved people's lives.

I file it under "shit happens".

Cops should have the same rules as the UN peacekeepers when it comes to pulling a gun. Use your fucking taser. No need to fire 16 rounds unless you're a skittish pussy.

when the threat is neutralized you don't need to keep firing.

Let me guess, everything you know about guns you learned from movie.

He emptied the clip into the guy in seconds. People don't explode when shot, so you just aim and shoot the whole 5 seconds you are firing and tend to only think about hitting the target for that 5 secs.

Why would you need to continuously shoot at a target for 5 seconds? If the target is down and no longer a threat there is no need to continue the use of force.

What threat? the guy was already on the ground. If you keep shooting at someone whose 1. already down on the ground 2. no longer a threat, it's murder.

If you're scared for your life when you have backup with guns drawn while the threat is armed with a knife... then you should just turn in your badge because you're a coward. It would be like turning the main gun on a hadji kid that threatened your tank with a rock. Think back to that little ten year old kid with the stack of bootleg dvd's and the porn in his back pocket. Threat? Only if you're paranoid.

The problem is that cops are generally paranoid people by nature. Giving most of them guns is a bad idea. Especially the guys that served in podunk reserve and nasty girl units overseas. Weekend warriors all wanna be Clint Eastwood.

Chicago police shot and killed a 17-year-old boy on the Southwest Side after the teen refused to put down a knife, authorities said.

Police received a call of someone trying to break into cars near 40th and Karlov in Archer Heights around 9:45 p.m. Monday, according to Pat Camden, a spokesman for the Fraternal Order of Police.

A squad car arrived on the scene, and officers spotted the teen -- later identified as Laquan McDonald -- standing next to a car with a knife in his hand, Camden said. The teen began walking toward Pulaski Road and ignored the officers' requests to drop the knife, Camden said.

"He's got a 100-yard stare. He's staring blankly," Camden said of the teen. "[He] walked up to a car and stabbed the tire of the car and kept walking."

Officers remained in their car and followed McDonald as he walked south on Pulaski Road. More officers arrived and police tried to box the teen in with two squad cars, Camden said. McDonald punctured one of the squad car's front passenger-side tires and damaged the front windshield, police and Camden said.

Officers got out of their car and began approaching McDonald, again telling him to drop the knife, Camden said. The boy allegedly lunged at police, and one of the officers opened fire.

McDonald was shot in the chest and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 10:42 p.m. He lived in the 500 block of North Springfield Avenue, about 5 miles from where he was shot.

Camden said a knife was recovered from the scene. A statement from Police News Affairs said no officers were injured.

Camden said none of the officers who responded had a Taser to use on the teen and were trying to detain him long enough for one to arrive. He said officers were forced to defend themselves.

"When police tell you to drop a weapon, all you have to do is drop it," Camden said.

As with all Chicago police-involved shootings, the Independent Police Review Authority was investigating.

He didn't lunge at the officers, he was walking away, he didn't slash the tyre or smash the windscreen of a patrol car, I don't know why the police can think they can lie when there is video footage of an incident.

Oh yes I do, they thought the video evidence would be suppressed - which it was for a year and could have been forever.

That and the officers knew he had a knife, not a gun, and he was walking away so no threat whatsoever.

@ Dilbert.  I don't know who wrote that story but the dash cam footage doesn't show everything that happened earlier.  For all we know he did threaten cops with the knife already earlier.  He is seen running down the road from the cops.  He was a danger to the cops and society, he didn't comply with dropping the weapon and surrendering, so who gives 2 shits.

I'd rather them confront him and shoot when he doesn't surrender then risk him running and taking a hostage, getting away, or slicing up someone while police play rope a dope because "he only had a knife".

So remember while they are playing fuck fuck with someone who isn't cooperating in public while holding a knife, and he starts to run then pulls out a gun and starts killing people, you would be the first person crying about the cops letting someone hurt people because they weren't willing to end the chase with an armed person on the run.

This should have been tax payer money saved.  Obviously the kid wanted to die or thought he was so bad ass that he was bullet proof.  People do stupid shit and die all the time.  Running around with a knife in public with multiple cop cars chasing your ass, then whipping the knife around in front of a cop with a gun pointed at you who is telling you to drop it................  well, got out and riot for that one.  Because this is the one people will finally realize that blacks threatening people with knives are the innocent victims of police racism.

Damn the forum is filled with some serious cry-asses.  You guys need to go out in the hood and give some fucking hugs to the brothers.  Maybe you will gain some perspective why the police are needing to shoot so quick.

In the mean time, watch a video that shows how quickly a person with a gun can fuck you up.

You're right, if someone supposedly threatens a Police officer then he can be shot any time later in the day by any other Police officer.

And you're right again, if someone is holding a knife then they could have a gun - again a reason to shoot them however far away they are.

But wait, what if he had nothing in his hands? He could have been about to pull two guns, or worse a two-handed weapon like an AK47 or a batleth - Someone having nothing in their hands is reason enough to shoot them in the head on the spot, and keep pumping in the bullets until there is nothing but a bloody stump where their head was.

I don't know who wrote that story

So what? The Police should just shoot everyone who looks at them funny?

Only minorities.

Unarmed black man: execute on arrival
Black boy with a toy gun: execute on arrival
Unarmed black man: execute when they run away.
Black man with a knife: execute on arrival
White men with many firearms: have a light hearted conversation.
White men with many firearms threatening police: Get the fuck out of there and give in to their demands.

Well, he's not part of an overarching group with a leader and goals, so he is indeed a lone wolf by definition.

However, the anti-abortion crew needs to dial it back several notches and stop looking at people like this guy as heroes for the cause. That's not overly likely though as these nutters view their cause as a religious crusade.

i think it's important to note that the media hubub and republican furor over an incomplete video that misrepresented PP's stance on making available fetal tissue procured from abortions most likely played a significant part in this wacko killing 3 people (including a police officer).  It's akin to people profiling and harassing muslims after 9/11.

I never heard of people profiling armed service vets after the Oklahoma City bombings.  Or the University of Texas shooting by Charles Whitman.  Wonder if that happened.
