Dude! Fucking mixtapes own! I still have a ton of cassette tapes. You can still buy them at electronic stores. I mainly make them out of necessity (don't wanna bother with the stupid tape converter and screwing around with an mp3 player), and it's fun, too. Sort of like DJ'ing in a way.

Eloquent in it's brevi- wait, no.

I assume the first thing you would have suggested is the Cowon D2+.

Scissors:
Small, flash, SD slot, touch screen, superb audio quality, 52 hour battery life. The only downside is an unrefined UI; the D2+ is supposed to fix that but I haven't had experience on it. The first UI is some minor annoyances, but I've never had a real problem with it.

Cowon D2+ = Cowon D2 with another colour. I run D2+ firmware on my D2.

No. It's identical except for the colour theme. They didn't even fix the ID3 problem.

It's so not worth its £189 street price for a 16GB. Sure, it's quite nice, but it's nothing spectacular or impressive. It's a basic touchscreen with an average UI. I really wouldn't reccommend it.

What I would recommend is either the new Sony Walkman NWZ-X1050 16GB X-Series or the Samsung YP-P3 (I currently have this, and the little widgets and shit are fantastic. Granted, the touchscreen is not as good as the Touch, but it's pretty damn responsive and much better than most other touchscreens out there).

And if you don't mind having something slightly bigger (not clunkier) then grab the Archos 5 Internet Tablet. It's hellishly sexy and runs on Android.

The D2 is much worth its price. The thing about it is not flashy features or ease of use (as it thoroughly fails at those), it is sound quality. You simply don't get much better sound from a portable device. The SDHC slot is also sex, running 16+16GB myself.

Actually, I think you'll find that both my recommendations either match or are better than the D2 with sound quality (read reviews, the Sony's sound quality is absolutely amazing).

If it sounds different, it's altering the sound. The D2 is very neutral, which is great from a studio perspective, but many think it sounds too "flat" or "boring".

As in, the two players I described don't "sound different" and aren't altering the sound. They have "perfect" sound quality. smile Like the D2, I'm sure, but it's such a flimsy UI in comparison.

I see.

I found some measurements of both the Sony and the Samsung, and they're indeed quite similar to the D2 in sound performance. But really, the D2 is £100 cheaper than the Sony, so price:performance is quite a bit better if you're looking for good sound.

Oh right, yeah, the Sony is a tad expensive for what you get. Thing is, you get some pretty damn good earphones as well. Ones you don't need to replace.

The Samsung is £10 more than the D2+ and has a much nicer UI.

To be honest, in the end, it's entirely down to preference. Also, there is no point in having a media player with fantastic sound quality if you don't have the earphones to go with them (I do, UE 700 awsm)
