"Sound card giant Creative caught plenty of flak for its recent driver debacle, and has long been criticized for bullying competitors and stifling innovation. But few have been willing to compete with Creative head-on, allowing the company to milk its X-Fi audio processor for more than two and a half years. Now the SoundBlaster has a new challenger in the form of Asus' $90 Xonar DX, which delivers much better sound quality than the X-Fi, PCI Express connectivity, and support for real-time Dolby Digital Live encoding. The Xonar can even emulate the latest EAX positional audio effects, providing the most complete competition to the X-Fi available on the market."

Great news.

When one company has a monopoly on certain types of hardware, it's always a bad thing.

And since it's PCI-E it's even better, since I have a PCI-E 1x slot above my 16x slot, so I can fit a sound card there to make plenty of room for a HR-03 for my vid card

Nice, this is definitely not a bad thing.

Like.

Although, I'm not looking to replace my SoundBlaster Live(s) for some time. Still does the job, old relics from the time before Creative went bad.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

Awsome. finally a good pci-e sound card. Although I'm so happy with my current audigy that I won't need this atm. Thanks to PCI-e I wouldn't have to use pci sound card that gets grilled next to my gfx card.

I may have to get me one of these as this X-Fi quite frankly is rather un-inspiring (it is the cheapest one so I wasn't expecting much anyway lol).
