So, I'm looking for a good Intel (obviously ) dual/quad CPU, a motherboard, and some DDR2 RAM to upgrade my computer. Yep, pretty much an entire makeover.

Try to keep it under $500?

You start with $300, because I already have the video card picked out. Go.

Oh, and overclocking is definitely going to happen, so include good overclocking CPUs and mobos.

Edit: Question: Is 800MHz pretty much the standard for DDR2 RAM now?! Because I hadn't heard of 1066 before and Newegg doesn't seem to sell 800MHz RAM.

Edit2: I'm looking at LGA 775 quad-cores and I'm torn between the Q6600 and the Q9300. Q9300 looks best to me, 45 nm vs 65 nm, which means lower heat and power consumption, and higher overclockability, right? And the higher FSB: 1333 MHz vs 1066 MHz. I do have a Zalman CNPS9500.

hold on, Havok, I love the CPU you recommended, but everyone seems to be recommending 800 MHz RAM. why not go higher with DDR3, as K-J said? 1066 MHz? 1333 MHz?

okay, so about the motherboard and RAM...wouldn't i want the RAM to run at the same FSB as the CPU? meaning 1333 MHz (i keep on thinking it's 1337, ) .... which means that a 780i would do me well?

It's not really that big a deal to do that. 1333MHz RAM is pretty expensive - I'd recommend just sticking with 1066 unless the price is right. 780i chipsets are pretty expensive, and would take a big chunk out of that budget - but it does offer triple SLi etc. Take a look at X38 chipsets - they are a bit cheaper but lack features seen in the 780i (which you might not use anyway)

i actually don't care about tri-SLI, but normal SLI would be nice.

Mhmm, generally I'd advise staying away from Intel motherboards - their BIOSes etc can be pretty limited. Although I'm not sure about the newer versions! 10600 and 10666 RAM? Can you give me a link? PC3 refers to DDR3.

RAM standard is DDR2 800 (up to DDR2 1200 with EPP 1.0).

Three questions:
1) What's EPP 1.0?
2) Will DDR2 800 memory be significantly slower than DDR2 1200/DDR2 1066/DDR2 1333 and the like?
3) Will it bottleneck my computer? The proc is going to be the Q9300 (cooled by a Zalman CNPS9500 and overclocked) and the video card will be a 8800GT 512MB (overclocked by me of course).
