So sitting here at work, I am involved in some email traffic with someone in Hamburg, Germany. I finally noticed his name.

Beer? His last name is beer? There is no way? How awesome is that. I want my last name to be Beer.

Because most jewish names are based of their own language "Yiddisch", which is actually a mixture of old german and hebrew, developed in the 13th century when Jews lived in Ghettos in germany.
We still have and use a lot of "yiddish" based words in german, like make a "Reibach" - to make alot of money "Maloche" - hard physical labour
