Hi guys. (guise, lol)

I am starting university (protip: college) in a month and a bit. I am enrolled in engineering (general).

For the first year, it is all general stuff (unless you choose to specify). Then at the end of year 1 you choose a specialty. They are as follows:

Chemical

Chemical and Biological

Chemical and Metallurgical

Civil

Electrical

Electrical and Aerospace

Electrical and Biomedical

Environmental (lol hippies sorry couldn't resist)

Materials

Mechanical

Mechanical and Aerospace

Mechatronic

Mining

Software

Software Systems and Aerospace

At the moment this is very daunting. Obviously over the year ahead I will get to know these lot better, but I was just wondering if there were any engineers on the forums that would like to give me any tips, share some advice etc.

Thanks heaps hopefully

I am an engineer of funk.
Don't believe me?
THEN YOU CAN COME ON DOWN...
TO FUNKYTOWN...
in my pants.

edit: um... but seriously?
I am going to go to school for Audio Engineering.

edit2: and Environmental engineering actually attracts people from both sides of the moral/political spectrum. Logging, Oil, Mining... all that requires a lot of environmental engineering to be done.

srsly though, don't go into software or electrical. I did (well, similair) and twas a bad idea (I find it boring). I'll probably switch to something else but I donno.

I think there is a huge need for chem. engineers atm.

Not sure though.

If DTU = University, then yes

You being danish and all i thought you would go to DTU (Danmarks Tekniske Universitet)......It is one of the best in DK....But where do you plan to study then? Aalborg?

Yeah they have a good design education up there....and they are famous for there group work which really pays off for the engineers (many students have patented stuff)...good choice i guess

Depends on where your interests lie.

I've worked as a Civil engineering technician, Army combat engineer, mechanical engineering designer of pneumatic components..
CAD draftsman for an architectural firms, mechanical engineering CAD, and civil engineering CAD..
Degrees or parts of degrees in Mechanical, Civil, and Electrical engineering..

By far the most fun was Army Combat Engineer (C4 and knowing how to use it creatively = maximum fun)

The most rewarding was mechanical engineering design.  From a wild idea in my head, to a scribbled drawing, to a CAD model, to an actual functioning device in my hands.  Nothing else more rewarding you can do for a job.
Also, something truly fun about being able to just know how most any mechanical device you run across works, with not too much thought.

Electrical engineering is (in my opinion) almost as fun as mechanical engineering, and almost as rewarding.  A little more abstract - less hands-on, more cerebral in general..  depending on where you end up working.

Software engineering: fun in it's own ways, but alot more abstract - and alot more office politics to tend with.  Mechanical engineering was more "do his designed parts work or no" and less about "who's popular in the office politics today".

Heavily depends on where your interests lie, and what kind of company you end up working for.
Oh shi- that's some amazing CV/Resume you got there. How did you get into so many different fields of engineering?

You must be like some sort of super genius

Exactly the kind of stuff I was looking for, thanks a billion rdx.

I hadn't really thought about mechanical much, but the way you put it it sounds quite fun - the knowing how things work part would also be ace. Is mechanical engineering involved in cars and such? I guess it depends on where you are working.

What kind of engineer designs computer components? Mechatronic?

Is there any particular strand which is heavy maths compared to others? Or one that is not very mathsy?

Sorry for the barrage of questions, have a karma to make you feel better

If your going to do anything areospace,  do electronic or software for designing new systems for planes, helos and radar as such (more money and you could end up working on some awesome project) . And do mechanical if you want to just do the old repair maintenance, but in the rare cases you might get chosen to actually build prototypes of new aircraft
