Recently on the evening news i saw that a town in Australia was deniying War veterans the right to march down the main street of town (australian anzac day traditon) unless they paid the 11000 dollars that it usually costs.

Instead this year the city council decided to upgrade the city waste treatment plant with the 11000 instead of honouring the men and women who gave their lives for us.
If those people hadnt fought in that war then we would all be japanese people speaking japanese

Do you think im wrong in saying that the council of that city is a bunch of ungrateful Ass-pirates that dont realise how much they are disrespecting the war veterans and their famalies?

If the city's that hard up then there's something wrong.

1)  IIIRC correctly it was $10,000 for the march

2)  Waste treatment is something of a necessity

3)  As the council pointed out, it's outside their jurisdiction.  Having said that, the Federal Goverment should be funding said parades

4)  It has been proven time and again that the Japanese were never going to invade Australia

It's not a city, it's a small country town.  Basically a suburb without any neighbouring suburbs.  $10,00 is a big deal.

They weren't going to invade us either.

Oh, then the vets could have their march somewhere else. No big deal.

That was a response to the "We'd all be speaking Japanese" comment.

Only, no.  It kind of has to take place on the main street or it defeats the purpose.  Also, many small towns have military memorials at or near the town center, and Anzac Day marches traditionally end at the memorial (there tends to only be one location per city which has memorials, including the big cities like Melbourne and Sydney).

According to a current affair it was 11000
2) Waste treatment is not a big necessity when they already have adeqaute equiptment/supplies

Heh................TT said it was $10,000 (or they may have said $20,000 total), we can have a dipshit television show fight!

Also, A Current Affair is not the evening news.  It's poor even by Channel 9 standards.  It's like Fox's dumb, inbred Australian cousin.

Good point.  And for that matter, why do they bother replacing broken lightbulbs?  Oh, that's right, because old things break and have to be fixed, and facilities have to be expanded as population grows.  Minor detail, I suppose.

Because it's utterly ridiculous to suggest that Japan didn't want to get stuck in a war where the environment was as bad an enemy as the enemy?

Thats fucked up, but if they actually need the money to spend on an essential service I can kinda understand.  Yes the ANZACs fought for our freedom, but do you think they'd want us wallowing in shit?

A choice of two shitty situations, its like picking heads or tails when tossing the shit coin, really.  No pun intended.

They had maps of Australia and New Zealand, with japanese names on them, right down to the smallest streets in the smallest of towns.  They had the numbers advantage on us, managed to bomb the mainland of our brothers across the Tasman and even landed scouting/hunting parties just off the coast of my home town.  Its a little bit different than pearl harbour.

Edit: I checked the map.  Its further from Japan than pearl harbour, in fact.

Hardly.  They had 1.7 million men, spread throughout all of south east Asia.

They also got midget submarines into Sydney Harbour, but both of these events were more dangerous in their morale effects than in what they actually did.

Also, I object to familial association with a New Zealander.  We are so much cooler than you.

so then the japanese would be marching and they would still be told to pay 100,000 yen !

why does it cost 10 grand ?, if its a small town how many Vets live there ? and to march all they need tis to close the road.

unless they all need special assistance to march or the £10.000 is for an open bar !

10,000 dollars.

In relation to reason for marching, check wikipedia for Anzac Day.

I'm disappointed in both of you for referring to TT or ACA in the context of anything other than commercialised trash pedalling. They both practice cheque book journalism with frequency that is embarassing, want current affairs that happened today or tonight, try the 7.30 Report.

I'm sure those who died would appreciate money for them going into something like sanitation. After all, it's also 'saving the country', just in another way. No vote from me however, because the question doesn't seem to have anything to do with the discussion.

Send the town Council a copy of the poem "Tommy" by Kipling.

It's amazing that, over the course of time, people in power always start thinking......

"Soldiers and Dogs Keep Off the Grass."

no way, VETS have already paid their dues, if anything the VETS should get paid for being in the parade.  it dosen't really matter what country you come from, a VET is a VET, plain and simple.
