How many of you said you wouldnt play BF2142 because of the Ingame Advertisments?

Well now its time to flip out again, even more so as the worlds favourite FPS makes plans to show you pictars of McDonalds.

http://au.gamespot.com/news/6163453.html

In-game ad firm IGA Worldwide announced today that it landed one of the biggest fish in the online gaming pond, signing an exclusive agreement with Valve to provide dynamic advertising to the first-person shooter Counter-Strike. IGA Worldwide hasn't said what form its ads will take in Counter-Strike or when they will first begin appearing. The firm most recently found itself in gamers' crosshairs after a disclaimer about the company's in-game ad technology was included in boxed copies of Electronic Arts' Battlefield 2142. When users claimed the disclaimer was a cover for installing spyware on users' machines, IGA CEO Justin Townsend strenuously denied the accusation and said the only data the company retrieves from a user's computer has to do with where they live (so localized ads can be targeted), as well as what ads they see, how large, and from which angle.

Sarrk, the ingame advertising is illegal in Oz because of the programming techniques they use to get the adds into our games.

We are fine here in Oz...

once upon a midnight dreary, while i pron surfed, weak and weary, over many a strange and spurious site of ' hot  xxx galore'. While i clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning, and my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour, " 'Tis not possible!", i muttered, " give me back my free hardcore!"..... quoth the server, 404.

I care about a little ad... I'm not going to pay for a game only so it can go and fucking show ads to me... I get plenty pissed already at the fact that every time I start up BF2 it shows an advertisement for BF2142. In truth it doesn't really matter to me if the advertisements are inplemented in a way that seems natural to the game world... for instance the advertisement in GRAW are okay because billboards with AXE advertisements exist in real-life cities as well so it actually helps make the game more convincing... but I don't like the fact that the software tracks how long I look at the ads and why. (I also believe this data is actually useless, but the issue of wether ads are effective at all is another discussion entirely)

I don't really care about the ad as long as it does not affect game play.  Besides when your in the middle of this game do you really look for the ads?

Which leads me to my next point

Why did the entire Battlefield community shit rocks when IGA was announced for 2142?

I find this worse than 2142, atleast it was upfront all the time, for this its like "Lollar! You paid for the game! Now we're going to make even more money off you indirectly!"

I couldnt care less though. Besides, 2142 got shit when EA got anal about copy protection.

I do.

But I haven't seen even a single ad in 2142 so I guess those don't come up in CS:S either.
At least in the very beginning.

computers are getting stronger, models are getting more complicated and in general (some) games are getting photorealistic.
these things are evolving along with the developers' wages, someone got to pay the bill...
the gamers? if they only tried to do that... the moaning and whining towards %*$$#!% EA would be insignifficant next to the reaction that would come if the game industry told you to pay $5 or $10 more (??OMGWTFWTHSTFU?? ) on a game.

ingame-advertisement would lower the price of the games. not that you'll be paying less in the future but you'll have to pay less More if you catch my drift.

you can be critical and you can be realistic, imo, few people here are able to combine those thing.

If people who paid for servers could somehow be paid a commission for successful ad campaigns...I'd have no problem. But when I'm looking at an ad for a Core 2 Duo that does nothing to benefit the community, all I see is something grossly out of place in the year 2142 that would've been axed by any competent art director. Seeing an Apple logo or a contemporary ad in a contemporary-set game doesn't bother me so much, as it doesn't detract from realism.
