What is a "Targeting Assist"?

Was playing last night and the game told me I got a targeting assist. I have no idea what this is supposed to be or how I might have received it.

This is only the second or third time I've gotten a targeting assist in 5 months of playing.

Well as the name says target assistance, how to get it I'm not sure of. Have heard that when snipers aim at someone and someone else kills him you should get it. Dunno if he needs to be in the squad or not, might have to do with these white diamonds that sometimes popup. I cant remember getting this one. Its rare i believe.

I got one before too and i have no idea... I was on my titan all alone, nothing at all going on. then it just pops up. kinda weird.

Lets logically break it down:
Assist: You didn't inflict the final blow, but started it
Targeting: You spotted the enemy and you are also a support class player. I think if you use the netbat system, and target someone with the device(The device that spots campers) and someone in your squad kills a spotted target, you get the assist point.

Could it be that it is given to people who spots an enemy for a freindly sentrygun or gundrone and when the sentry/drone kills that person you get a point for using the drone/sentry ?

Your thoughts, insights, and musings on this matter intrigue me

When you spot an enemy (Enemy Infantry Spotted! etc) it'll come up on the HUD. If someone else then kills him, you get a targeting assist for locating him. Worth '0.5' points.

As a sniper pointing targets to fellow squad members.

Support nebatting targets to fellow squad members.

some of your ideas make sense but if they were true I am sure that I would have gotten it more than 2-3 times in my ridiculous amount of hours played. I mean whether Im a sniper or support or whatever, I will "spot" at least 50 enemies in a round. Im always in full squads, If I can I will keep spotting armor for my engineers etc.
I think its just a random bug/occurance that happens rarely. Just like that message "You have been killed by XXXXX" that just pops out of no where.
