So, what really motivated your service to your country?  A lot of people complain that citizens enlist for purely financial/educational gain.  What are your thoughts.

For me, it was all three.  I wanted to serve in a particular position, which requires a degree that the military is paying for.

2 and 3 for me, they sold it to me when they showed me the video of a tank driving about with Queens 'Dont stop me now' playing in the background.

The second reason is purely because i wanted a cheap house and a pension.  I am looking at retiring at 45 with a cracking pension.

1 and 3.

I signed up because I love the values of America, and let's face it, no where else lets me drive a tank around.

All of the above. Call option 2 greedy, but it's a nice bit of icing.

i loved the thought of fighting for my country, you will never have a job with so much pride , teamwork and most of all FUN. i served my country and went to Iraq for the war, i saw some bad shit , shit that i would never even tell my wife of kids. thats all part of the job, you cannot join the army and expect not to protect yourself and your boys. anyway fankoo

It's obligatory service in Norway, much like Finland, so this summer might see me leave for bootcamp... The only reason I'm not going pacifist and work in a kindergarten instead is, well, educational benefits for one.

All of the above.  My first choice was to test with the US Navy in the nuclear power program, after failing the written miserably I looked at their SEAL program, I'm a decent swimmer not super swimmer.

Then I opted for the US Army Infantry with Airborne, didn't want to be a dirty nasty leg.  Did three years active Mech Infantry, then two years in a Reserve Drill Sgt unit, followed by eight years Light Infantry in the Illinois Natl. Guard, left as a Light Infantry Platoon Sgt.  I opted out because I had finished my schooling and was starting a career.

When I was in high school I knew there was no way I was ready to go to college.  So it was either work at a grocery store, a bank, a correctional institution or join the military.

So I joined the USAF.  (Navy wanted me to go play on submarines, screw that!)
