Do you need to buy a DX10 video card once the come out to play games that require DX10?

I thought you could just download DirectX. That's what I did with DX9.

Well seeing as how yours worked with installing DX9 then I'm assuming it would work with DX10. But you know technology, always changing, can never keep anything running smoothly.

It's just I don't wanna buy a computer, then get all these games and realize I need a DX10 card because every game requires it. Know what I mean?

sorry kids, but your spankin' new 7950 will not be compatible with dx10.  It's a whole new ball game.  New operating strategy, new everything.  I think I read somewhere that the only card that are ever partially compatible with dx10 are the ATI 1900 series, and that has something to do with the Playstation 3 contract.  The companies want you to keep dropping $600 on the latest and greatest dx9 stuff right up until dx10 is released.  Then you can spend another $600-$1400 on the super-magnum-quad SLIxAwsome cards.

So what, I have to wait till mid next year to get a card that actually works with DX10? And what will that run me? 1500$ for a good DX10 card? I don't think so. If you can't just install DX10 then screw it.

no DX 10 will not work with your card.

nor will DX10 install on a 32-bit OS. u need vista.

yet they are going to have a DX9L . upgraded from DX9C bundled with Vista, for developers to run code to be backwards compatible with older hardware. Crysis for example is DX10 for best image quality. but will run on DX9C or L. in fact all the screens from E3 were running on current gen hardware and DX9  and it looked Sick still

dont worry developers would have to be sucidal to release ONLY DX10 games at vistras laucnh. they will be backwards compatible for a few years

Hi

Firstly if im correct there is no DX10 compliant card at the momenet. BUt you old card ie in your case 7950 will run with DX10, it just wont be able to use all DX10 features such as Shader model 4.0, geometric shaders  and so on...

Yea but see, some games that use DX10, will probably NOT have an option to turn off ALL DX10 effects... so there will be significantly more lag with a DX9 card (7900, etc) than with a DX10 card.

You can have a DX8.0 card, and install DX9.0

You wont be able to display and render DX9 textures though. I dont think itll be the same with DX10.

Ok so, I'll upgrade to Vista once it comes out (after all the bugs are fixed) and then download DX10 and it may work right?

I think thats lame that they make the highest end cards not compatible with DX10. They are making people pay alot of money just for a DX10 card int he future.

Sorry if i dont make sense, I just woke up lol

Microsoft's redesign of DX came because of what developers wanted.  Also, your comments about not making the high-end cards compatible with DX10 doesn't make any sense.  Did you complain when your GF4 or 8500 series Radeon card didn't support DX9, or GF3 didn't support DX8?  This has always been the case, and will always be the case.  Video cards are essentially very specialized CPUs.  Because they are specialized, they can process video information far faster than a CPU can, but because of the specialization, you can't just throw new software at it and have it supported like you do with a regular CPU.

I also wouldn't worry about games coming out of the gate with DX10 capable video cards being part of the minimum system requirements.  As noted, developers would lose their ass, especially with DX10 requiring Vista.  They are going to spend all that time and money to develop a game that only runs if the person has Vista and a video card that doesn't even exist yet, and probably won't be widely available across all price ranges for some time yet.  That would be suicide for them.

no, your wrong. 7950 wont work in dx10 games... but dx10 games have dx9 software, so it all depends on the game

I thought there were two version of Vista being released, 32 bit and 64 bit. That would imply that DX10 will run on a 32 bit OS.

You won't get the full DirectX 10. You will only get DirectX 9 with some DirectX 10 graphics.

The DirectX ten graphics cards are:

ATI R600
nVidia G80

I will be getting the R600

DX10 will run on a 32-bit OS, but it still won't run on XP or any other OS besides Vista.

So much misinformation. How bout some of you "experts" provide some links supporting your statements?

First off according to this MS document (http://download.microsoft.com/download/ … tX10FS.doc) DirectX9 will be supported in Vista (DirectX 10 will not be in XP, nor is it backward compatible). As game developers start coding their games for DirectX10 they will almost asuredly include DirectX9 support as well. If they don't they are shooting themselves in the foot as they will lose potential sales - they have no direct incentive to get their customers to upgrade their video cards. it will most likely be a couple of years until games start becoming Vista only (with a few exceptions I'm sure).

If you have a DirectX 9 card, then installing Vista (which is the only way to get DirectX10) will not give you any DirectX10 capabilities. You would have to run any games in DirectX9 mode - if it supports it - however, as I stated above, it should be supported for some time.

I still see Vista as being 1-2 years away from being stable enough to buy it. I believe that DX10 is going to be released some time after vista itself. With both sure to have major bugs, and the fact that DX9 games won't just drop from the market, I had no problem shelling out 600 for a 7950. You won't, however, see me buying another on for quad SLI. Not unless I somehow end up with a 32" widescreen. A single card handles even a dell 24" with ease.

I wonder what the SDK will be like for DX10. DX9 was a mess, I did not like using it, thank god for Managed DirectX that was much easier for coding with.
