which would you get?

Intel Core 2 DUO E6300 "LGA775 Allendale" 1.86GHz (1066FSB) - OEM (CP-135-IN)  £129.19

or

AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 4200+ 2.20GHz (Socket AM2) - Retail (CP-168-AM)  £132.72

As you can see they are both about the same price, I am just stuck on which new CPU to go with.

AMD, no question about it.

AMD, their processors are built for gaming. Whilst this whole Intel Conroe "shannanigans" is dominating the world, the world will come to its senses in a few months time, realizing that AMD is better.

The Core 2 Duo E6300 is a better performer than the X2 3800+ but is also more expensive, thankfully for the E6300's sake it is also faster than the 4200+ and the 4600+ in some benchmarks. Overall the E6300 is a better buy, but at stock speeds the advantage isn't nearly as great as the faster Core 2 parts. In many benchmarks the X2 4200+ isn't that far off the E6300's performance, sometimes even outperforming it at virtually the same price.

E6300 is a better performer, and when overclock (If you want) can beat even AMDs top notch CPUs.

On your budget it's a bit of a tossup.  If I were you I would save for a few more months and get a E6600, that chip is clearly a winner in terms of price/performance.  In the meantime, the prices on conroes will have settled a bit.

And one other thing.  You would do yourself a favor next time you have a tech question to ask it on a tech site like http://forums.anandtech.com/  you'll find you get much more informed answers there than you will on your average gaming site.  (sorry guy's, but it's true...)

I agree. On a real tech site, you dont get mindless AMD FTW etc.

CPU's aren't the most important thing of a PC if you want to game on it a lot. Graphics card is much more important, and I doubt you will notice much of a difference in AMD or Intel CPU. If you have good experiences with one of them, continue using that brand, that's the best I can tell you.

AMD all the way. I will never own another intel product. Now that AMD and ATI are one they will continue to own the gaming market.

Brand loyalty will get you nowhere.  Brands play leapfrog with each other all the time and as consumers, we benefit from it (i.e. AMD slashing prices to combat Conroe).  As a gamer, the smartest thing you can do is not fall into the brand loyalty trap.  Buy the best performance you can afford whether that be Intel or AMD, ATI or nVidia.  I've been running AMD for over 10 years, but there is no way in hell I would build an AMD rig at this time.   Intel has taken over the performance crown for at least the next year and a half (about the lifespan of a new rig).  Enjoy your AMD man, I mean that.  I'm going to ditch my FX60 in january and build a conroe rig.  I really hope AMD does come back with something strong in 2008 though, that will be just in time for me to jump back to AMD for the next one.

I think i would take the intel man it sounds really good besides intels are also known to run bf2 faster and less laggy but thats my opinion if u like amd go with it it's still a good computer have a nice day/night.

AMD all the way! I just built a new rig and it was the first AMD chip I've used in a gaming rig before. Man it smokes the intels by far! Not to mention what you get for the money. Get yourself a nice AMD processor and load up on RAM, you'll like the results.

Intel, check the bechmarks.
AMD users are still in denial.

GPU is the most important but the question was for CPU. It's funny how when AMD gets blasted by Benchmarks they will now point out the settings of the test. They never did before. They turn the settings down on these test to put the burden on the cpu and not the gpu. Apples to apples.

If you are still undecided pick up ANY good pc mag.
