I'm just saying you have a predicable internet persona/posting style.

How many 4 lanes each way highways do they have? A 30 minute drive for us on the weekend is clear across another major county.  There's is the next town.

Have you heard of the milk lakes and grain mountains of the 80's?
Farmers were paid with subsidies on how much they made. They ended up making as much as they could to get as much money. The UK over-produced BIG time. We have to pay our farmers to leave a percentage of their land un-used.

Albeit a beautiful coastal drive, it was a meandering road trip to Giant's Causeway, with many frequent slowdowns at each town for some local parade or celebration.

I could say the same thing for the East Coast, USA, too, but...  I'm Cali.  So, highways galore.

Ethanol indeed is really silly.
While you may get more independent from oil, you still produce CO2 and in addition waste farmland.

And guess where that farmland comes from, in the #1 ethanol using country Brazil?
Yes, cleared rainforest, additionally making the CO2 balance worse.

Trucks are useful, but not really that useful - a $500 towbar on an average vehicle and a handy trailer rental company makes much more sense.
I find that extra seats are more useful more of the time. And for a lot of things, folding down the seats can fit them in. Dishwashers fit in hatchbacks.
I got a Citroen Grand C4 Picasso.
When folding down both rows, I can fit 2 dishwashers in there.

True, perspective would be one of your bills suddenly spiking 600%, and me saying "Don't complain, it is still more expensive elsewhere."
"Suddenly spiking"? 25 years isn't exactly "sudden". Historically the trend is just swinging back upwards where it has been before

It's not like US gas prices jumped and it didn't happen anywhere else. It was a global phenomenom.

Again, when I started driving, $0.63/gallon. Now $4ish. So I guess when you say get some perspective, you only mean get YOUR perspective, and you are not willing to get MY perspective.

Someone with a gas guzzling SUV complains to me about their gas costs, I reply "that sucks" and go on. Not lecture them about their choice in vehicles or tell them it could be worse...

The oil companies are putting out a lot of propaganda to the effect that energy self-reliance = communism and you must drive a 6.0l truck and eat a kilo of steak for breakfast to be a real man, but ethanol will eventually find its place - just as it has in Brazil.

Slack-jawed yokels swallow the propaganda whole but maybe its not all their fault.

Very true. As long as it hasn't been sitting the garage for more than 12 months without the engine being turned over you'll get a sweet deal most of the time.
And where would I find such a vehicle?

I work at a retirement apartment complex where a lot of old folks have cars and rarely drive them. I wonder if I could get one there from somebody.
Put up a notice
"Sensible young USMC applicant looking for an old car which is no longer needed, will love and cherish it for ever and ever"
Don't put a price on, they'll fall over each other to sell to you.

But old, barely used cars have a whole different set of problems...

I never lectured anyone, I just said what I thought and then when challenged I backed it up. If you perceive an opinion as lecturing, well, all I can say is you're misreading what my intended point was - which was merely to express an opinion.

Not saying you did. I just said what I thought and then when challenged I backed it up. If you don't see how by merely expressing that opinion, you are telling an entire country how wrong they are for complaining, then all I can say is you're misreading what your intended point was - which was to express an opinion than other people are doing something wrong.
