Current card's EMV chip failed to read at several stores requiring its use. Figured it was bust and ordered a new one at the bank. While waiting for a new card to come in, I tried it again at another store. It worked.

Would be good enough as a FWP, but that's not all. It worked, but didn't even ask for a pin or signature before finalizing the transaction. How is this supposed to be more secure?

The people who rent them out, mostly the banks, are rolling in it.

Some guy in a shop once explained the costs of having a visa reader on his counter. The was a rental charge, a transaction charge, a percentage and the company kept any payments for months in case of a dodgy transaction - which the retailer would then get stung with.

here any transaction under 100 doesn't need a pin. the easy pass really is just a way to make spending easier and less effort, so you spend more.
