I gotta admit, that is cool.

More pointless than the iPad itself. Amazing!
Ok no actually that is pretty cool. But it's a very expensive center console

Utterly pointless with that model. He really should have waited for the 3G model, because then you would have also had free navigation (sort of). As it is with that model, you have no SIM card and thus no Internet connection. The only way to get an Internet connection is to jailbreak it and tether it (unless you're using a European model, because then tethering would most likely be enabled and not blocked; did AT&T ever remove the tethering block on the iPhone, btw?) or set up one of those in-car modems that broadcasts a 3G modem signal through the car over wifi.
I think the 3G iPad also has different dimensions, so if the guy wanted to swap it out, he would likely have to break out the dremel again or buy a new center console to modify again.

I bet it'd get annoying on a really sunny day. That glossy screen is... meh.
But pretty cool nonetheless.

lol at how perfect the EQ fitted.

i bet it would get jacked real fast
Just installed one of those EQ's into a big van along with around 5k's worth of audio. It's an Audison Bit One, amazing piece of kit, a steal at £550!Finray wrote:

Your thoughts, insights, and musings on this matter intrigue me.CapnNismo wrote:

also, Dension make an in car WiFi system.
Indeed, my car has been left alone because there is nothing interesting, something like that and I will never see it again.RavyGravy wrote:

It's nice but I don't think it's a good idea. It's a heck of a distraction.
The problem is the angle of view, the screen is very glossy and he can't see a darn thing on it from his angle. So he can only use it in a practical method when he's not moving.
I still think the iPad is a bit of a waste of money.

And above your tomb, the stars will belong to us.
That's pretty sick, but no 3g?
yeah fuck texting and driving when now you can actually read a whole book!

Already posted that... the modem would actually be more cost effective, but ultimately potentially slower (Tmobile and AT&T both have rather poor 3G networks and I'm not aware of a CDMA equivalent, as of right now I only know of Huawei's Mi-Fi modem; Ford is apparently going to be doing it this year, too, but I have no idea what carrier you'll partner up with) as the modem from Huawei is rated at 7.2Mbps while there are newer USB modems out there rated at 21Mbps (also from Huawei). So if you shelled out the $120 extra it will cost to get a 3G modem in your iPad (which costs about the same as the subsidized modem from 3 in the UK), the iPad modem will probably be faster than whatever extra modem you would have to buy for your car and then divide the connection across the wifi network within the car. So if you're on a road trip with more than one person wanting a connection, your speed will suffer and 3G modems don't have the best ping. I'd personally rather have the built-in 3G modem for speed's sake and then couple that with the 4.0 OS's new (if you want to call it that) multitasking, you could probably set up navigation with Internet browsing/media so that the passenger(s) can play with the iPad and the nav system will interrupt and tell you your turn is coming up.
I really don't understand this...you're in a car. What would you possibly use this for that would be better than just...taking your iPad with you in the car.
My dad had talked about wanting to build a super compact computer to put in our Suburban, I really don't get that either. At least with that you can get some decent input devices though for when you are stopped...but this is just stupid. The screen isn't built to be used in that position, it's not made to do anything except play music (as if there aren't MUCH better solutions at far lower cost) that you would do in a car, and to use it you have to stab at something half an arm's length away but parallel to your body.
This shit makes no sense.

Why is it that the iPad gets all of this attention when better products released five years ago were used to do precisely the same thing.. five years ago?
because it has an i infront of itmikkel wrote:

Because like it or not, the iPad does it better. Once Apple throws in multi tasking and it turns out to be as good as Android, the iPad suddenly has potential. The battery life is quite good, the hardware is bang on (I don't like Apple, but they do make great hardware) and the software is also very well written.
I think the in car idea is an absolutely fabulous idea. Once Apple allows the pairing of keyboards via Bluetooth (all in 4.0, though not having it at launch is quite a poor move), then you will have an alternate means of input. Having it in the center console is really no different from a navigation system in any car, though, guys. Depending on the position of the screen to help with making input easier and to keep the glare down, you can have a very bitchin ICE setup. Large store space and you can hook it up the amp and everything. Then you have in car navigation with access to Internet radio. Even getting a proper satellite radio set up with GPS navigation built in and a touch screen would cost the same as an iPad or more! Here you have Internet radio, your mp3 player, GPS and an Internet browser. What's not to like? (other than the fact that any 3G provider in the US that is not Verizon or Sprint is more than likely going to suck)
I'd totally put something like this in my car if I had the money to do it and a center console that would actually work with it nicely. If you would work up some kind of alternate input device (like the knobs on virtually ever production car around used to interface with a GPS system while driving) and install that then you're even better off than before!
