"About a dozen people carrying guns, including one with a military-style rifle, milled among protesters outside the convention center where President Barack Obama was giving a speech Monday — the latest incident in which protesters have openly displayed firearms near the president.

Gun-rights advocates say they're exercising their constitutional right to bear arms and protest, while those who argue for more gun control say it could be a disaster waiting to happen.

Phoenix police said the gun-toters at Monday's event, including the man carrying an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle slung over his shoulder, didn't need permits. No crimes were committed, and no one was arrested.

Last week, during Obama's health care town hall in Portsmouth, N.H., a man carrying a sign reading 'It is time to water the tree of liberty' stood outside with a pistol strapped to his leg."
[My note: the rest of that quote is "with the blood of patriots and tyrants."  It's a Jefferson quote, but it seems rather rash to make that near the president.  That's pretty close to being a death threat.]

Now, I'm an ardent supporter of gun rights, but to me, this is just stupid.  This is the quickest way to cause a public backlash against gun owners, because it paints gun rights advocates in a bad light.

Yes, you have a right to protest.  Yes, you have a right to bear arms.  Still, you're bringing an assault rifle with you right outside a presidential speech?   I guess these guys don't mind being watched by the government, because I'm sure they are now.

Watched by the government is the least of their concerns. Watched by the security forces and snipers who protect the president is more worrying.

It only takes a heated speech or one argument outside and one of these guys will make a mistake and not have time to reconsider that they just did.

It'll just take one person to do something stupid to wreck everything for everyone. I hope the protestors realise that.

Pretty ironic that the home where the leader of the richest nation on Earth lives, is only a few blocks away from said nation's worst ghetto.

WTF are you guys talking about? Pretty much the whole area around the White House is a lot better now. Real estate in the Capitol Hill neighborhood is damned pricey. I feel safer walking there at night than in some parts of San Fran.

Honestly, the only 'bad' parts of DC remaining are areas in Northeast, far Southeast north of the Anacostia, and almost everything (save for a small area) south of the Anacostia.

It also helps that a lot of DC has been gentrified. People can preach the evils of it all they want. At the end of the day, if it'll make areas safe to walk around at night, then I'll welcome it.

This is were to whole right to bear arms thing gets alittle rediculous. Seriously, there is a time and a place for everything. And a presidential speech is neither the time nor place for your beloved AR-15.

Fucking hell, the last thing I'd want to do is have a gun on me near the president. One person does something stupid and a lot of people are liable to get shot.

Reminds me of the gun-toting nudists in 'Sleeper', campaigning for the rights to carry guns and be butt-naked.

Does seem stupid TBH.

Meh, they were following the law to a T. A car could be used to kill, should no one be allowed to drive there due to the fact that POTUS was around. Hell, considering Bush was attacked by one, maybe nobody should be allowed to wear shoes when the POTUS is in your city.

I'm pretty sure they close roads that the Presidential motorcade is moving through?

They shut down half of central Canberra when Bush was here.

There where cars all over the place when Reagan was shot. What is to stop someone from getting in one and plowing through everyone in an attempt? If the boys in blue/black really had a problem with it, they would have done something. They let them make their point, while making them stay in a corner far away where they wouldn't get a clear line of sight, while keeping a close eye on them.
