What's the difference, besides the o/d button making it 3 speed vs 4 speed in my care?
I don't quite get it, are the gears longer / shorter or does it just cut off the 4th gear?

on some vehicles, torque converter lockup is also inhibited when OD is off.

when you're driving up a grade or towing you don't want the trans shifting into OD.

Also when you need the tranny to kick down instantly, rather than a second after you put your foot down ( overtaking etc). Can be a bit handy going down a slight hill.

This.  when towing and going up a steep grade the transmission may continually shift in and out of OD causing unneeded wear on the tranny.

So if you are not driving at consistent high speeds it prevents the car from falling into the OD gear. Being in the OD can be clumsy and hamper acceleration response from slower moving speeds (i.e. when passing quickly)

edit: another good reason ...

OD Button often operates an extra gearbox attached to the end of the main gearbox (on old cars at least).
It was a quick and dirty way of changing a 3 speed gearbox into a 4 speed, without so much engineering time or tooling.

Doesn't it just shift the car down a gear?

Probably why my 700R4 can't go full throttle in OD..basically tops out at 100 in third.

Yeah but I think the point was with a manual you don't have to go out of your way to keep the car from continually shifting gears, you choose what gear you want when you want it.  And autos just suck, you pay more to get less performance and lower MPG.
