Alrighty, i need a new pair of speakers... my current desktop set isn't cutting it.
However, rather than just buying a pair, I'm looking to completely redo the set I have - from crap low-end consumer stuff to actually 1/2 way decent stuff. Anybody have an suggestions on good audio chips? Also, is anyone good with speaker/cabinet measurements/calculations?

Anyone remember this old fire hazard?

https://i205.photobucket.com/albums/bb8/Freezer7Pro/LABBAGGKLART.jpg

Yeah, I finally, after almost a year, got around making a proper case (or, well, a case) for it. Behold, my updated, all-steel Compaq power supply box power supply!

https://i880.photobucket.com/albums/ac7/FF_CCSa1F/labbagget2.jpg

The insides consist of the same transformer as before, a 10 000µF industrial capacitor (attached to the case with a big-ass bolt on the top, hells yes!), and an L200, just like before, except this one has 100% film caps attached to it, and a little PCB instead of components soldered directly onto the legs of the IC.

https://i880.photobucket.com/albums/ac7/FF_CCSa1F/nyaagget1.jpg

https://i880.photobucket.com/albums/ac7/FF_CCSa1F/nyaagget3.jpg

Delicious leaded soldering. Lots of it.

https://i880.photobucket.com/albums/ac7/FF_CCSa1F/nyaagget2.jpg

The voltage regulator itself. I failed a bit when making a hole for it to screw into, so there are a couple of half screws attached to it. Oops.

The goal when building this was to make it rigid, and man, did I succeed. This thing is massive and hard, the power supply case I used being made out of millimeter-thick steel, and the meter rig even thicker such.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

Nice job. Might wanna add a heatsink on the switch MOS-FET. What chip did you use?

The heatsinks are on today. I am using SG3524.

The PSU failed the load tests today. It couldnt maintain the required voltage. But again, I don't have any compensation on the feedback, workiing on the simulations.

Holy mother of hell, that is one sexy scope.

Nice job, dude. Keep it up.

Also, I upgraded the heating in my workshop a bit today:

https://i880.photobucket.com/albums/ac7/FF_CCSa1F/silly50sheatingsysten.jpg

I hope two 200CFM fans will be able to push the heat down a little (I have a feeling they will). If they don't, well, I've got another pair

Isn't it? I find it to be one of my more aesthetically pleasing inventions. The way the white-ish beige colour of the fans flows with the rust of the radiator and the grainy roof is just marvellous.

Made a maze solving robot in my Microcontroller class. It uses a PIC18F4550 micro controller, two front IR Sensors, a Side Ultra sonic sensor(took me forever to figure out how to program it), and two motors to move it around.

I just got my driver's license, and with that, comes a car. And a car radio.

From 1990.
With a broken cassette player.
And a digital tuner that hasn't had a working backlight for the last decade.

So, I added an (actually bulb-coloured) LED to replace the broken bulb.

https://i880.photobucket.com/albums/ac7/FF_CCSa1F/addedaled.jpg

But then I thought I'd make something out of the broken cassette player, so I made a cassette.

https://i880.photobucket.com/albums/ac7/FF_CCSa1F/madeacassete.jpg

And put it in.

https://i880.photobucket.com/albums/ac7/FF_CCSa1F/installedacassette.jpg

After which, I proceeded to solder the wire onto the volume control (lower left corner.) It took several hours to figure out how Philips had rigged the damn thing. It uses 100% Philips ICs that have very poorly written documentation, and they weren't even used in any manner even close to what is shown in the datasheets. Bloody Philips.

https://i880.photobucket.com/albums/ac7/FF_CCSa1F/underside.jpg

And thus, we have a radio with working frequency display and line in capability. You activate and de-activate the line-in function by sliding the cassette in and out. I'm quite happy with that solution, it's got a nice, retro feel to it.

https://i880.photobucket.com/albums/ac7/FF_CCSa1F/lookatthat.jpg

Testing reveals that it actually even works! Who would have guessed.

https://i880.photobucket.com/albums/ac7/FF_CCSa1F/justasplanned.jpg

Oh, and don't mind the missing knob. I just dropped it in the car when I took the radio out. I had to use "some" force.

Choosing to fix this old thing up wasn't just a decision based on budget restrictions, either. You see, I hate all these new-fangled, blue-LED-blinking, hundred-button-pressing, USB-plugging, MP3-AAC-AVI-playing pieces of flashy nonsense. They're ugly as hell, hard to use (I can't even find the power button on most of'em,) and about as reliable as a drunk dog on acid.

This thing has a grand total of ten buttons, plus three for the cassette player, two of which aren't even used any more. It has no flashy display animations, or other colours than orange. No more than four stations of storage (which, mind you, don't disappear if you disconnect the power, and you turn it on by turning the volume knob. I love it. Why can't they make radios like this any more?

Trotskygrad wrote:

Oh. I didn't see this before.

Well, it depends on the load, of course. With the fans, they moved slightly before I added the capacitors over each fan (they're connected in series,) as they moved in and out of phase with each other. If I turn the radio I posted above up to 11, I can see the current meter jump in tune with the music.
