Make sure your forward hand is very steady.

One of the BIGGEST things I would say is DONT HIT THE BALL TOO HARD. Everyone wants to smack the shit out of it so it flys everywhere and maybe knocks something in... but more often you fuck yourself up. If your SLIGHTLY off but it it soft it will likely bounce in, if you hit hard it will likely bounce back out. Just hit it hard enough for it to get where it needs to go.

Think ahead as well. Most people just shoot for what ever ball they can, and go shot by shot. Learn to put the right spin on the ball, both side to side AND top to bottom. Look at what your next shot (or even a few shots ahead) is and learn to place the cue ball there with your last shot.

If worst comes to worst and you don't have anything good to go for, just focus on leaving the cue ball in the worst possible place for the other player.
these looks work too.

Try and learn where the white is going to go after you hit the ball. Where you hit the white gives different spin on the ball.

When you have played some rounds and believe this is something you will continue doing for some time to come buy your own cue, using a good cue really makes a difference ...

Play with people that are better than you and study how they do different shots ... practice doing double shots and learn the angles ... the clue to honing your skills are play much and on a regular basis, go for the easy shots and up the difficulty level as you go ... trying to much early can brake your confidence ...

  • Play lots and often
  • Play with better people
  • Buy a good cue
  • Hold off the urge to play for money

meh, just play play play.

No, not practice, practice is boring. Just play the damn game, and you'll get good at it. Unless you fail at grasping the concept of angles, it shouldn't be too hard. Also, go to a place with a good table. Not to some place where the table is slow as fuck.

On an amateur level, it's a pretty simple game, really. Aim white ball -> hit ball at right angle -> score.

Once you've gotten that down, you can plan ahead on your next shots, and place the white ball accordingly.

Then you can start placing the white ball so your opponent ends up having tough shots. This is when it starts to get fun.

If you bring your girlfriend to play, make sure she's not wearing too low a pair of jeans, unless you want a bunch of drunken men drooling across the table.

My cue is . For those who can't tell its a dragon, was hand made in korea. My dad got it for me while he was on TDY.

Anyways, what do you have trouble with? Angular shots? Straight shots? But yeah, the best way to get better is just to do it. If your good geometry than you should get the basics of pool. It's all about angles and math.

Just gotta know geometry, and have a couple beers to steady your hand, that's all there is to it.

Don't rush, take your time and make sure you get your angles as good as you can. Don't hit the ball too hard, not much you can say except practice makes perfect

Three things:

Can I pot it
Can I pot it, and set myself up for another possible pot
Can I, at least, make it hard for the guy after me by leaving the cue ball in a crappy position (safety shot)

Just focus on actually getting good connections and getting pots before all the other stuff, you'd want to get the basics through you. No point doing all the forward thinking if you can't follow it through

Serious Tip (quite ironic)

dont ask for tips, dont watch videos, dont let anyone tell you how to play, you have to find your own style. just set yourself up at a table, and keep playing. nothing beats practice, and your natural technique will be better than anything anyone can tell you to do

edit: the one thing i will say though is trust your instinct, if you line something up, and then think of changing the line, you were probably right the first time
