Simple question:

Almost due East West of here (Cambridge, UK), fairly high (say, about 10-11 o'clock (if 12-oclock is straight up)) there is a bright light (brighter than a star) in the sky, what is it? Planet? Space Station? Aliens? Something Else?

Edit: it would help if I knew my East from my West, wouldn't it?

It is almost due West, not east, as I first said.

It could be Venus.  I'm not sure where it would be placed in your skies though.

It could be a supernova, but I haven't read anything about a new one recently.

The moon

now seriously it sounds like venus. It's much brighter than any star.
once upon a midnight dreary, while i pron surfed, weak and weary, over many a strange and spurious site of ' hot  xxx galore'. While i clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning, and my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour, " 'Tis not possible!", i muttered, " give me back my free hardcore!"..... quoth the server, 404.

It is Venus ... it's the first "star" you see when it's getting dark outside ... and it's often mistaken for a star ...

Venus,  it is super bright here to, brighter than usual

you can see if it is a planet or a star, by look if its flickers. if it doesn't  it is a planet

ARGH!

Can someone please give me a link to a reliable and accurate source of information that will tell me for sure whether it is Venus or not - I thought, and a little googling seems to confirm, that Venus, when visible, is really low down, near the horizon.

But this thing is really high up.

Have a look east in the morning - you might see it there then

Take a photo and enhance. If you can see a flag on the surface it's the moon.

Seriously though a photo might give us a good reference in relation to the other stars and constellations around it.

Not even the Hubble could take a photo of the flag on the moon.

Yeah, and when I said enhance I totally expected him to try...

I thought the "seriously though" might have been some sort of hint my previous statement was erroneous.

Some people think you can see the flag on the moon with a powerful tele. Actually in my experience most people do.. even on my tele..lol. I'll will be looking through the scope and say coooool I can see the flag from Apollo 11. "No Way!" .. lulz for the evening

Either Jupiter or Venus, those are the only two extremely bright planets.

It's most likely Venus. I live in western Canada, and Venus has been visible every night for the last few months.

Not possible. Like Kmar said, even the most powerful telescopes could not see the lunar lander or the flag on the moon. Much too small.
