Don't know why, but a couple days ago the game just wouldn't open. Click on the icon and the BF2 screen comes up, but then it just goes black for a second and then I'm back at the desktop. I reinstalled and repatched with the same result. The only things I can think of that I did to the system was defrag and did a disk cleanup and install wmp 10. I am stumped.
That happened to my friend when he had it because it comp. did not meet the requirements to run BF2.
And if you want to get technical, I repatched, then reinstalled then repatched again, trying to open the game between each step. And if you want to get more technical, the only posts I came across with crashing issues were where people crashed during a game, google search included.cablecopulate wrote:

I fixed the problem, so I'm posting the solution in case anyone else has a similar problem. First off, I ran the game in a window to see if I could get an error message like the guy here ( http://forums.bf2s.com/viewtopic.php?id=11258 ). I did get a message and got this screen:
So reading that error box told me one thing: the CD was having a conflict with a screen size/refresh rate with what it's allowed to run.
ding ding ding!
So then I realized the problem: I had played some CS one day, and the refresh rate was 60hz, and I hate that, it hurts my eyes. So I used Reforce to change the 800x600 rate to 100 or whatever. So I downloaded it again, changed the refresh for 800x600 to 60hz, and reopened BF2 and got this:
So in closing, forced refresh rates with rates other than what's on the BF2 CD will cause the game to crash upon opening.
