Basically, when I select sleep mode in Vista, it just doesn't work. My monitor, keyboard and mouse stop working. But, I can still hear the fans in the case.

When I move the mouse or press any key, the PC doesn't respond. I have to hold the power button on the case. And switch it back on.

Any ideas?

Thanks

That's meant to happen.

That isn't.

Could be a setting in your BIOS that's disabled.

Look for things like "Wake on xxx"... (where xxx is 'mouse' or 'keyboard' or 'usb' or somesuch).

What mobo you got?

I forgot to say, that sometimes, it does work. It's like 50/50 chance it will or it won't happen. When it does work, everything goes quite, like if you shut down your PC. And, as I said, when it doesn't work, the fans, the lights on the case, basically everything say on.

And this is my motherboard:

No, I think it is. My computer is the same ... standby perhaps? Keyboard and mouse are sometimes totally disabled but when you press the power button everything is back to normal. (and it isn't a full reboot)

The point of Sleep is that the computer is just sleeping and you hit a key or move the mouse and it comes back up.

Are you talking about Hibernation, kyle?

if your fans spin down or not depends on your motherboard and PSU and isn't controlled by the OS
once upon a midnight dreary, while i pron surfed, weak and weary, over many a strange and spurious site of ' hot  xxx galore'. While i clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning, and my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour, " 'Tis not possible!", i muttered, " give me back my free hardcore!"..... quoth the server, 404.

Hence I said it's probably a bios setting...

@r'Eeee: I'm downloading your mobo manual atm, if I can see a mobo setting you might want to adjust, I'll let ya know (by making another post)...

(@kyle: actually, you may be kinda right - I was forgetting there's S1 and S3 power saving...)

@r'Eeee:

Okey dokey...

1. Boot into BIOS.
2. Go into the Power Management Setup section.
3. Set ACPI Suspend Type to either S1(POS) or S3(STR) - S1 is when the fans are on whilst is sleeps, S3 will stop the fans.
4. Set Power On By Mouse to Double Click if you want that feature.
5. Set Power On By Keyboard to either Password (and set your required password with next option down from that) or Keyboard 98 to use the Windows 98 keyboard 'power' button (other similarly named buttons on others keyboards (e.g. 'sleep') may also work (or may not)).
6. Hit F10 to save those settings and reboot.
7. (hopefully) Profit...

Now, if you don't 'profit', then your PSU is probably not supplying the correct current on the correct voltage-lines whilst it's in sleep-mode.

(all this is on pages 46 and 47 of your mobo manual, btw)

Hmm thanks for the help. But, I can't eve access the BIOS. My keyboard and mouse don't power up, until I get to the Vista loading screen.

Are they USB or PS2? Could be that...

Or could be the 'your PSU isn't providing the correct current on the correct voltage-lines' thing...

enable hibernation if you want the computer to power down but "resume" where it was before

Sleep mode is just the O/S  the computer continues to run

They are both USB.

The keyboard is connected to a PCI USB card. The mouse is connected to one of the motherboard USB slots.

Ok, first try connecting the keyboard to one of the mobo USB slots (though I suspect (but could wrong) that the 'PCI USB card' isn't actually a card - just a back-plate).

And then see if you can boot to BIOS...

In that case, I was, indeed wrong.

Which raises the question, "why?"...

Ok, I was able to get into the BISO, when I connected the keyboard to my motherboard USB slot.

I changed those options stated above. Now, I need to wait, and see if that help. Because, as I said. Sometimes, it works fine.

most likely you have it set to "Wake On LAN" which will keep the computer running so that it can detect if a LAN signal is coming through the network cable. Deselect that option, and it should shut down like it is supposed to.

Have you tried just pressing the power button once? That's what I do and it works fine.
