Sony cutting price of PS3, adding video downloads

LOS ANGELES - In a bid to regain lost ground in the fiercely competitive gaming business, Sony announced Tuesday that it will cut the price of its high-end PlayStation 3 console by $100. It also will introduce downloads of movies and TV shows to the game machine's online store and, with some software partners, roll out a number of exclusive games.

The moves suggested that Sony still views Microsoft as its chief rival rather than market leader Nintendo, which seems focused on extending its lead. But, of course, that's not how Sony brass portrayed its announcements at a press event here at the game industry's E3 conference.

Sony's PlayStation brand in general and the PS3 in particular are "just beginning to hit [their] stride," said Jack Tretton, CEO of the North American branch of Sony Computer Entertainment, which oversees the PlayStation products...

Ironically, I thought that Sony lost money with each PS3, due to the Blu-Ray player....this doesnt seem to help them....

That's pretty friggin awesome. I was planning on getting a PS3 eventually, but with this news, hopefully it'll be sooner rather than later.

Also I was browsing the PlayStation Store on my PC last night and saw they had put up a crapload of tv shows and movies for download. I'm considering getting some to put on my PSP.

they did in the start, but how old is this machine now and how much has the technology advanced ( i bet that it has gotten a lot cheaper and economical)

It's not really a price cut. What they are doing is taking the current 40GB model and doubling the capacity to 80GB with the same features as the 40GB. Meaning, no BC, few usb ports, etc for the same price of $399. That will be the only SKU sold in the US. Meaning, if you want BC, you'd better get the 80GB MGS4 bundle right now or you won't be able to get it anymore. Unless, of course, you want to spend $1,000 on ebay.

If that was directed at me, I already have mine I've been playing it since Sunday. As for you .sup, it would probably be a good idea buying the new ps3 version if you're a graphics whore like me and can't stand ps2 games.
