Andrew Hanlon 'shot seven times' by US police

"Relatives of an Irishman killed by police in the US state of Oregon viewed the body and said he was shot at least seven times. Andrew James Hanlon’s brother-in-law said the 20-year-old had two gunshot wounds to his left arm, three wounds to his abdomen, one on his thigh and one in the back of his shoulder. “It was definitely not grouped in one area,” Nathan Heise told the Statesman Journal.

Mr Hanlon was shot and killed late Monday evening by Officer Tony Gonzalez, who was responding to a reported burglary in progress. Mr Heise said Mr Hanlon would come banging on their door at times in the middle of the night, and they would let him in to sleep. The Heises speculated that Mr Hanlon took a wrong turn Monday night and started banging on doors on a different street, scaring residents. Someone called police, reporting a burglary, and one or more officers confronted Mr Hanlon, Mr Heise said. Mr Gonzalez is on administrative leave during the multi-agency investigation, which is routine."

I'm not going to speculate as to what exactly went on here because not all the facts are in yet but I remember times when friends of mine have drunkenly knocked on the wrong door on the way home...they've never been shot to death though!

NOTE: I acknowledge that maybe there is more to this story and am not presuming innocence or guilt for either party.

Sounds like the poor guy was drunk. But shot 7 times is clearly excessive force.

It's making big news over here. His mother is furious but it was revealed he had a history of mental problems...but who knows what that means? The guy could have just had depression or something. Being shot seven times when there was no weapon seems pretty mad.

Sad story. Will be interesting to see what comes out in the investigation as to why the officer pulled the trigger.

Based solely on that article, we don't know if he had a weapon or not, Braddock.

Oh I am sure he was just on a Sunday walk through the park and these cops decided to just gun him down for their own entertainment.

I know, like I said in the OP I am keeping an open mind...I mentioned that there was no weapon because no report in the Irish media has mentioned a weapon yet. I will retract the statement without any problem if it transpires that there was one.

We've spoken about bias and ignorance in many threads in the past...you seem to always immediately jump to the defence of the cop/soldier/American/Israeli even when all the facts aren't in yet. I didn't jump in and say the cop was a murdering scumbag just because the victim was Irish, I'm keeping an open mind until the facts of the case transpire fully.

If the guy was trashed and armed it could be fairly resonable.

Little bit of an update on this story.

Associated Press wrote:

SILVERTON, Ore. (AP) - Authorities won't say whether a man described by a relative as mentally ill had a weapon when a Silverton police officer shot him to death.

Friends and relatives of Andrew Hanlon, 20, say they would be astonished to hear that he was armed when Officer Tony Gonzalez investigated a burglary report late Monday and shot him.

"I've never seen him carry a weapon," said Hanlon's brother-in-law, Nathan Heise. "I would be completely shocked if they said he had a weapon."

Deputy Marion County District Attorney Doug Hanson said investigators wouldn't reveal details of the shooting yet. "We're going to wait for a complete and thorough investigation to be concluded," Hanson said.

Heise said Hanlon came from Ireland to the United States in July 2007 on a six-month visa and stayed illegally afterward. He suffered from paranoia and delusions, Heise said.

Heise said the family didn't encourage him to stay illegally, so Hanlon got his own place.

But he once broke in at Heise's home.

"He was just sitting there on the computer. I think he'd come in to check the Internet," Heise said. "He didn't realize how uncomfortable he was making ourselves and others through his behavior."

Heise says it is unlikely Hanlon posed any threat to officers.

"Although he would kind of go in and out of these things, we never thought he would become violent enough to attack a police officer," he said.

Sam Madge, a friend, said Hanlon was "a little emotionally unstable, but he had a good heart."

"I'm sure that he didn't have a weapon," Madge said.

In the neighborhood of Monday's events, resident Mimi Surbaugh said she heard officers telling people to stay clear.

"It just sounded like they were trying to keep their composure, but their voices were shaky," she said. "You just got a feeling that it was more than a small-town ruckus."

Gonzalez, 35, joined the police department in 2006 and got his police certification March 1, 2007, state officials said.

Seven-term Silverton Mayor Ken Hector said he could not recall a similar instance of police using force and causing a death. The town of about 7,000 residents is east of Salem on Oregon 213.
There are not many details as of yet.  The only people talking are family and friends, not anyone involved in the incident.  I find it impossible to make a judgement this early.

I would be of the same opinion. We don't know enough yet. The Irish media are making a big deal over it so it won't just disappear, the facts should come out eventually.

Seems faily sad though, the guy doesn't sound like he was a deadbeat.

Nope, not I. I will be in Boston in August if the cops are looking for more target practice however.

Yer right, Braddock, I do lean towards giving more latitude toward the cops, soldiers, Israel etc.........for one very good reason, because groups such as these are always supposed to play the game within a set of rules against people who do not, and are expected to win. the fact that they are also human and risk their lives so we all can sit back and critique them when we have never been in thier situation tends to make me feel fortheir plight more than the people they are trying to interact with.

We expect cops to deal with the assholes and scumbags of the world daily so we do not have to. I am not inclined to judge instantly against them, but to instantly give them the benifit of the doubt. I think they wanna go home at night as well.

So a similar position to your attitudes on race?

Guilty until proven innocent...'nigger' until proven black person.

Nope, I feel the cop should be innocent until proven guilty.

Not really sure where that came from Braddock, but if you wanna address what I actually said feel free.

but to respond to this latest attack................I have no prejudices towards races, I have social prejudices only.............I see someone sagging, walking around town in dirty clothes wearing a wife beater, looking and acting like a fool, be them black or white,  I will pre-judge them, perhaps I will be wrong, this is my flaw....It has nothing to do with race.

Do you think that my attitude toward the dead criminals would be different if they were white??

I'd have thought a taser would've been more appropriate. It's not like he was armed (or was he, I don't know)

Seriously, unless the guy poses a very imminent threat (e.g. hopped up on PCP and holding a gun or knife or something), is it really necessary to shoot him SEVEN times? Not just once in the leg to incapacitate? The guy was drunk; I've never been drunk but from what I hear/see you aren't exactly coordinated.

It's like that guy who got killed by those cops in NYC who shot him like 50 times (including reloading).
