Why do you think the Aussies are so smitten by child porn?

This is a huge ring for such a small population.

The investigation was triggered after a hacker posted 99 child porn images on a European Web site, which attracted 12 million hits in just 76 hours, including 2,800 from Australian computers, police said.
I think this is more Australian police were on the ball quickest.

Although the first part of that sentence makes me raise an eyebrow. A "hacker", eh?

On a European website.

And I'm glad the Aussies have been caught. Dirty sons of bitches. Hopefully it will lead to more arrests and some over seas too.

Heard this on the radio this morning.

Why does it seem that the media instantly calls anyone doing something illegal on the internet a hacker?

The children in the images range from babies to 18 years of age.
Wouldn't it not be child porn if they are 18 years old? edit: disregard that, it was probably forced pornography or something. Still shouldn't be classed as child pornography though should it? Unless I'm missing something

Well, only 90 were arrested however there were 2800 visitors. This leads me to believe that alot of the hits were by accident, or unrelated searches. Also, I really doubt that word could've gotten around about some site with child porn on it to 12 million people in 3 days without a federal official finding it. Also, the way they've worded it makes it seem as though someone hacked a previously popular site and posted the child pornography, which has caused visitors of the site to see it, without actually intending to.

70 out of 20m is not a lot.
Australian Police are very heavy on this, and operate far more intrusive web surveillance than most know about.

i feel sorry (not only for the children) for the police who have to sit there and sort through images and files. i mean, that would have to be the most depressing job ever?

Yeah, definitely: Australians are so into child porn. They just found the guys, unlike other parts of the world that don't even bother.

Mind you, I wonder how much of this is what we consider to be "child porn" and how much is "teen porn". Both are illegal (and wrong), I can't help but wonder if it was really as bad as they make it sound...

Some of the biggest child porn rings (that have been caught at least) have been in Europe.  There was a big bust in Germany a little while ago.  Who knows if this is actually indicative of the main rings though...  Chances are, Asia has the most potential for child porn rings because of the sex slaves in parts of Southeast Asia (most notably Thailand).

I draw some measure of satisfaction out of this story for two reasons; a buch of really sick fucks got caught, and it shows that there is depravity around the globe, and not just centered in certain areas.

Disgusting.

12 million hits in 76 hours? What kind of site was this? What was the normal traffic?

Don't tell me there are 12 million people that need to be systematically exterminated.

*granted there were probably several repeat hits.

the pics could have been hotlinked or something. The feds did say most of the people did see these pics inadvertently.

All in all its pretty disgusting.

Yea, from the scope of the hits listed in the article the Aussies pale in comparison to the rest.

There were a few links distributed by the FBI that were meant to be "child porn" sites that they would use to bait people, log their ip and track them down. That was the rumour anyway. For a short time (before the FBI realised that this idea wasn't exactly fantastic) some 4channers were sending the links around 4chan, convincing people to click on it so that they would be logged by the FBI etc etc.

Overall it doesn't sound realistic, so it was probably just a fake scare that people did "for the lulz". Also, I browse 4chan semi-frequently and the mods/admins are very quick to bust anyone who posts Child Porn and they receive a perm ban, and I for one, haven't seen any links to this site so I don't think it was 4chan.

In related news, apparently nude children in art is a victory for pedophiles.

Well that just makes perfect sense.

Doesn't Auz have a giant porn firewall or something to that effect?

I suppose they must need concentrated doses of the most vile and hardcore things they can get a hold of to make up for the lack of highly available less hardcore and legal stuff.
