Unless I misunderstood something on the 31st May 2008 Grisoft are going to stop updating AVG Free 7.5.

I don't want to pay over 50 dollars for AVG 8. And without daily updates I doubt the free edition will be sufficient.

I can't be the only person in this boat, what other good, free anti viruses are there?

sorry if its been posted before

Well you have to "purchase" the software through "sites" that provide "downloads."

I'll see if there are any good legal solutions first.

I have AVG 7.5 too. I guess I would switch to Avast! http://www.download.com/Avast-Home-Edit … d=10825540

I use both avast and avg at the moment.  I'd also recommend you use Spybot - Search and Destroy.

Lolwut, two anti-viruses = failhard.

Srsly, it'll fuck up your computer, they find each other as a virus and delete key files. Talking from experience here.

They release a message like this every few months. Usually just means a new free edition is coming out

Man they've buried it good this time, I gave up looking.

Scrap that, just use http://free.grisoft.com/ like always.

Just get it from Download.com, or if that one drops (more than likely), FileHippo.

The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

weird. a pop up kept coming up saying avg 7.5 will stop being updated. When I clicked upgrade to 8 it gave some site where you have to pay for it.

But seems to be free on download.com

There might have been a very subtle "Click here to continue without paying" button, or something.

Wow, I suppose you're too hardcore for anti-virus?

You must not ever torrent anything. I always scan torrented stuff, just to be sure.

I use Avast, works good (and talks to you )

No, it's more just being naive.

I find it funny that someone who's demonstrated, if not much, else a decent or satisfactory knowledge of computers would not use even a simple AV program. Furthermore, when asked about it, only ever responds with "UGUYSRRTARDS!"

Do you have any better argument? I remember your projector winning post some time ago. According to your translation, one of the segments of the organizations description of you was "living and breathing IT." Using IT in that sense is weird and had a fun connotation throughout the whole paragraph. That aside, do you honestly think you will move on to an IT job and tell your clients to not use AV but get smarter?

lol You'd have to be pretty stupid to let an antivirus program mess with another one. And as freezer said, they do different things and offer different kinds of protection.

I have 3 installs of XP on my PC.

2 have an out-of-date copy of Norton Internet Security, the other, my 'games' install, which I boot into most often, has no AV installed at all.

I have NEVER had a virus infect my PC.

It all comes down to how you use your PC.

Don't "purchase" software from a "download" site and you won't get viruses.

Don't automatically click the links in every spam email you get and you won't get viruses.

etc...

While I don't agree with Freezer's arrogance, I don't really agree with yours, either. Many people skip on anti-virus and never get anything that anti-virus software can find. I don't use anti-virus software. Never have. I've never gotten a virus on my own machine either. I do a scan every year or so to satisfy people who smugly tell me that I'm bound to have a million viruses, and that I'm an idiot for not having anti-virus software. The last time I did this, I got four false positives out of an hour worth of scanning. That's really something that I can live without.

We don't all need anti-virus software.

There are lot of ways to get viruses that don't require user failure.

Likewise, I like to have AV software available, so that I can check every so often, but I only do a scan maybe once a year.

Also, likewise, it always ends up, after hours of scanning, reporting nothing but false positives.
